The best orchestra was the Berliner Philharmoniker in the last years of the Second World War: apart from outstanding musical qualities, one senses the existential doubts throughout. Never was there more penetrating, more intense music than at the end of the war with the total collapse.

Do you know that the Part from Minute 2.45 to ~ 3.15 was the "entry music" to EVERY mesage in the nazi radio for Unternehmen Barbarossa, the war against the soviet union from 1941 to 1945! Every german knows this melody, its the sound of 30 million people murderd! In this seconds is the complete tragedy of germany! Karajan, Liszt, Berliner Philharmonica, here in use from Hitler and Goebbels for the biggest cruelty in the history of mankind. The german tragedy...

I heard this first while watching the original Flash Gordon series on a neighbor's TV around 1951-2. The music went right through me, and I was never the same. It began my love of classical music. Little Richard and Fats Domino had to make room for Liszt. And boy did Les Prelude drape myth over the series. Elevated it, so it still plays today when you can find it.

As a child, once I watched the movie "Animals are beautiful people". There is a scene in which thousands of pelican hatchlings were doomed to die because the dry season came too early, so their parents had to leave and all of them went on their death march through the desert that was once a lake, leaving a trail of dead pelican babies. I was totally devastated and went into tears. But then, rain clouds appeared like mighty war machines while the 2:45 part of Les Preludes was played. At first, the heat evaporated the rain and the pelican babies kept on dying, but finally the rain prevailed when there was only one baby pelican left. That must have been 45 years ago and both the scene and the music left a permanent impression on me. My childhood memories gave this piece of music a special place in my heart. I had to sweep away a tear while I wrote this.

And von Karajan knew where this came from...being a good rehabbed Nazi, he played it just as the official introductory theme of the WWII Die Deutsche Wochenschau newsreel was played. (It was the theme from the Russian invasion in 1941 to end, and also radio reports on the RRG.)

What do you mean "where this came from"? It "came" from the pen of Liszt, the most cosmopolitan composer of the 19th century. He wrote this in the late 1840s - the inspiration came from two French poets, Autran and Lamartine. Liszt described the title "Les Preludes" as referring to the beginning of his own development as a composer. Furthermore, Liszt's world-view was opposed to everything that can be associated with Nazi ideology. The only thing he cared for was the content of people's character - he supported, taught and promoted musicians from every national/religious background he encountered. He would have been utterly revolted to learn about his music being used for totalitarian propaganda. The German Music Society he founded (Allgemeine Deutsche Musikverein) was shut down by the Nazis when they came to power - they wouldn't discriminate against Jewish musicians, so they had to be crushed.

@@gergelykiss thank you for your education on this. I allways was ambivalent about this piece of music. I love it but the fact that the nazis ( mis)used it for their wartime propaganda made me back away from it. Now I know this I can truely appreciate it in all its beauty.
