Hey, if you read this the day of the upload, I'm sick, and wanted to say a couple of things! - I'm getting better! But in case I don't reply or heart to some of you that's the reason :D (or maybe I just hate you) - Hope you'll like this essay, it's different than the stuff I usally bring, but after Noita and Digimon world videos this one felt like a continuation of that flow, and I like it! - REALLY hope the narrating tone doesn't end up being cringe or bad, it's only the second time in a video I try to do this sort of "Darker" narration (the first time was horrible) - all the editing was done while sick and/or sleep deprived, you may find 1 or 2 or 3thousand audio errors (honestly I don't even know if the video actually works, didn't rewatch it after the production, and my editing program bugs videos very often) - I think MAYBE the next long video may be another 100 days, this time on Digimon World Next Order, but it's a project for at least january/february 2025 - Goodnight Frapollers

Since you asked for trans opinions on the writing of characters like Isabeau: Generally whenever a writer asks trans people how to write a trans character, that is exactly what we'll say we want to see, it's the first and most common sentinment you'll see in posts on reddit asking us about how to write a trans character, for example. We're people too, trans is just one of those things that are part of it the same way you're italian or gay or a fighter. Having the stuff come up naturally and within the themes of the world is so much cooler than "look at this character this character is trans don't you love the trans character" and it also helps with the main point of wanting trans representation: If it's just another trait they have, it becomes a normal part of a normal person, and in the end that's what most people want to be treated as. That said, trans (and gay) representation has this problem where unless it's extremely explicit, people will treat it like it's not a trans character. Like Isabeau outright saying "if I change again" is still almost at the point where you'll have some idiot coming in and going "Nono isabeau was totally talking about just changing his name because he has many manly names" or some stupid excuse to refuse that he is trans. It often results in this awkward situation where you almost have to beat people over the head with it, without making it their whole personality. Imagine you have an Italian character in a game set in America, and they mention the kind of food they used to eat growing up, but then a bunch of people start saying "oh he wasn't Italian he just visited Italy and likes to talk about it, and he just knows the language because he visited a lot". Just because the character didn't explicitly say "I am Italian", people are trying to turn him American instead because American is the "normal" Also, if the character is going to be ANYTHING it should be relevant, like Isabeau is trans and that fits the themes of change they're working with a lot, so that's really good, or Vivian in the thousand year door is othered by her sisters who bully her and refuse to include her as a sister, it doesn't have to be a massive thing but there has to be some relevance other than "btw this character is trans", just their relationships or how it affects their outlook on life, or if they're struggling with it at some point. If that isn't the case it can come up in a character bio, but it shouldn't be mentioned in a situation that benefits nothing from it. Again this makes occasional awkward situations where it needs to be so explicit that the relevance becomes an afterthought, because it has to be so obvious that you can't deny it if you want people to take it seriously. Anyway. Love your videos Frapollo, thanks you for the great experiences.

I personally believe read it as that she has had this struggle for longer, and in the moment where she's excited about not changing it's her real beliefs coming through. I remember Loop even had a line where they say that Mira seems unsatisfied with her position as housemaiden. Feeling like not changing goes against the beliefis what makes it so hard for her to accept wanting to be the same during her friend quest. At the end of it Sif even says that noone needs to know to which she laughs. To summarize, I think when she says not changing is bad it's her talking as a housemaiden, while her excitement for not changing as change is Mirabelle shining through@@frapollo94

1:15:50 In defense of Mirabel, I think the contradictions here are purposeful. She's very.... emotional throughout the game, sometimes quite nervous, a bit jumpy one might say. If Sif expresses their care by constantly self sacrificing at any given chance. Mirabel expresses it verbally and emotionally, quite frequently. She's also quite doubtful of herself, she questions why the head maiden even chose her out of everyone. It makes sense for her entire conflict to be thinking she's in the wrong for not wanting to "change" even though it's completely valid in literally everyone else's eyes. She probably thinks she's expected to be something she's not after the head maiden gave her the Change God's blessing. Now she's no ordinary housemaiden but the savior, the key to stopping the King. It's a huge responsibility to bear. After all, if she herself doesn't want to really change, is she even worthy of the Change God's blessing? Is she even worthy to call herself faithful? Is it selfish to want to not change? I think the point of the side mission is regardless of what her faith says or anyone else says, she should try to be more confident in herself. She can simply choose to be who she is, breaking the cycle of change is in itself a change. She doesn't have to change for anyone's sake, if she's in a good place where she is, that's good enough.
@frapollo943 күн бұрын
THat's the point tho it's not selfish and it's not unfaithful, and it's stated in several dialogues, Change god sees positively breaking traditions, and also Change god thinks you shouldn't care about other people's feelings blocking you from changing in the way you want. If she's really devoted she wouldn't care too much about changing by not changing in my opinion. Maybe I'm missing something but her resolution would have been more interesting if Change God actually didn't allow normally breaking traditions. THERE is when Sif circumvents the system and proposes to change by not changing and Change god sends a sign of consent, idk something like the dagger given to sif, maybe he could give a special brooch to Mira or something
@X-SPONGED3 күн бұрын
@@frapollo94 I simultaneously agree and a bit not. Yes, it would've been awesome if Mirabel just said "fuck God, I'm happy with where I am." but as I said, the problem is literally all in le head. She's making a big fuss over nothing because she thinks THAT'S what is expected of her. Her arc (I think) was learning she didn't need to keep thinking what others would think of her and just be more confident in herself. (If I got that right ig, idk lol im just a rando)
@frapollo943 күн бұрын
Nono lemme clarify, I too think her arc is that, not having to fulfill some expectations, and as I said I like the idea of the message, the point is that it's based on something which isn't in a real conflict, cause her god already allows to do what she wants to do, and also, let's be honest, what's more "strong" in terms of change than literally breaking a tradition? And that's why I found her arc unnecessary, cause there is no real struggle to go against... In a less elaborated way let's say she reminded me of those 13yo from old shows like braceface which made up problems over nothing
@X-SPONGED3 күн бұрын
@@frapollo94 ah I see, in that case I agree wholeheartedly. Maybe instead of focusing on her want to "not change", it could instead focus on the perceived burden of being the vessel for the Change God's blessing. Should Mirabel change who she is to be a "proper" savior? Etc etc.

Pretty sure the message behind Mira's quest isn't "Not changing is ok", but "You should change what you yourself wish to change about yourself, not because other people expect you to change". She wants nothing to do with romantic relationships, the idea of having a physical partner disgusts her, but she feels pressured to do so, in the name of her belief. Not wanting to change one aspect of herself doesn't make her a hypocrite when she insults the king for wanting to freeze Vaugarde in time.
@frapollo942 күн бұрын
I thought I explained myself better than that, the reason for which I think it's a bad resolution is cause no one is blocking her from doing that. Change belief allows and supports breaking traditions and multiple npcs confirm that too. It seems to me she's making up a problem that doesn't exist. If change god was against breaking traditions then I'd greatly understand this... also someone else said that her being housemaiden needs to change even more than others. What changes more than literally breaking a tradition?
@willcheat2 күн бұрын
@@frapollo94 No one is blocking her overtly, but she still feels there's an implied pressure to find a bondmate, as that is what she perceives as tradition in the change belief (Yes, the idea there's tradition in a religion built 110% on change is pretty ironic and paradoxical). And yeah, like you said, what better exemplifies change than changing the system itself. It's that fact that Sif helps her realize. My comment is that, at 1:13:10, you say "she doesn't want to change, she's good as she is [...] which is kind of hypocritical after she insulted the king for not wanting to change". Not wanting to change one aspect of yourself hardly compares to wanting to freeze absolutely everything as it is. Also, kinda bummed you didn't show the "kinda sus" event, but hell, at 2h+ runtime for this video essay, I certainly won't blame you for not showing it. Thanks a lot for this video Fraps :)

I think that the thing of "changing by not changing" being weird is that, while it's breaking a tradition, it is pretty much not doing one of the main things you are asked to do as a Housemaiden of Change as, even if the Change God doesn't care about what you do, some people might judge her for that (not all followers of any religion follow it to the letter after all). Still, great video! I finished In Stars And Time a few weeks ago so this came right on time lol

The problem is she's the one who confirms breaking traditions is encouraged by the change god, therefore changing by not changing shouldn't be a problem at all, as she's changing something. And going even deeper, isn't breaking a tradition one of the strongest possible changes? If anything people would love this imo Thank you for the support!

I wanted to do this game and discover it in it’s entirety, but I want to watch this 2hours long video by Frapollo, truly a one of kind dilemma ! Without watching it, I already know this video is a certified Banger !

Thanks for making this vid, otherwise I'd probably never know about this gem, and I have to admit, some scenes sure did bring a tear to my eye. I know how hard it must be to make something like this, but that was a great wach and I really did enjoy your commentary. Thumbs up, and if I could subscribe again I would.

SPOILER FOR THE END OF THE GAME/VIDEO, DO NOT READ UNTIL YOU'VE FINISHED i like to believe a theory that i saw that said the weird sadnesses that drop the star crest are actually coming from loop, with the weird star appearance, smell of burnt sugar associated with wish craft which loop did use, and being all three types, kind of like how siffrin can use all three craft types
@frapollo944 күн бұрын
Oh wow that's interesting, so like those are a product caused by Loop's old wish to reach the king easily or something similar? And now those entities give you the star crests necessary to counter the King's tears?

Forgot to mention this in my other comment but if you want another RPGmaker game with a very depressing and hard hitting narrative Check out End Roll the regretful rpg it has one of the most interesting protagonists I've ever seen with an ending that just makes you sit and think in silence for a while It's free to download and not very long it's very much worth checking out

In Stars and Time is a goddamn masterpiece. I can't believe a concept as simple as "What if Groundhog Day but no good ending, just bad forever as you watch the MC slowly go insane" would birth such a sublime piece of art. Now I actually wonder what a game with ZERO actual good endings in this exact scenario would look like. Just a poor soul trying every choice and avenue possible to escape, going through the entire 5 stages of grief, hitting a brick wall at depression, and in the end succumbing to their madness by embracing apathy and just refusing to entertain the loop as a whole. What would the title be? Maybe.... O.U.R.O.B.O.R.O.S.?

To be fair to Loop, Loop didn't have the shield skill or any other broken skills sif party had and still managed to beat the king. Loop is Rock Lee and we are Gaara

If I had played this game as a teenager I think it would have defined my personality for like an entire year. As it stands it's really damn good. I played the whole thing over a 48-hour period without realizing it and that DID fuck up my tendons from constantly feathering the skip button for 1 out of every 2 hours in a weekend, but it was worth it.

1:13:00 I think you are missing that Mirabelle is a Housemaiden, a PRIESTESS of the change belief. She's the most outspokenly pro-change of anyone, to the point people think she is the known to be lazy change gods would literally reach down and bless her as it's chosen champion.... And she has things about herself she doesn't want to change, things she wants to hold onto, which contradicts her own self image, and the image she projects to others. This is not simply "priest questioning their dogma" so much as "the prophet failing to live up to what they preach & wholeheartedly believe", she is being harder on herself than she is on others. Where she does not blink to say "ignoring tradition is part of change" for others, she pressures herself to be constantly changing, and was doing that before becoming the chosen one. (Taking more classes than anyone, refusing to focus on any one skill by constantly changing her focus.) Like that can seem small to an outsider, but staring at your own contradictions is one of those things that makes everyone flinch.
@frapollo943 күн бұрын
The game doesn't show the "ignoring tradition is part of change" as a way to blink on others' decisions, but as an actual thing people can commonly do and very positive towards the Change god. I would have understood if Change god denied this possibility and she had to take a step forwards after sif suggestion and impose the idea of change without changing to break tradition, and would have also made a very solid conflict. The idea of not agreeing with some parts of a belief is something which can be explored very well in games, and the resolution Mira would have needed to have to come to an agreement with herself would have been much stronger. But what I saw in this sidequest was in my eyes almost unnecessary. She was Don Quixote fighting windmills basically, cause there was no problem and she created a problem. Also, in my mind breaking a tradition is a much stronger change than any other "normal" way to change (and so the best way she could pursue to change more than the others), but maybe that's just me. To give you an example think of Yuna from final fantasy 10 (SPOILERS) literal daughter of the last religious savior of the world, has one of the biggest weights on her shoulders, but still questions the ideals of her god and eventually goes against them and the expectations of the whole world to show not everything is black and white and some things can change
@Hallasammal3 күн бұрын
About Mirabelle, she is a very insecure character who feels like as the "chosen one", she must hold herself to very high standards, especially because she feels like she's already a fake. It's not that simple to radically break tradition, even if it's technically endorsed by her religion, when you're not confident in yourself and your own decicions. And she felt very alone - even in real life, admitting that you don't want a romantic relationship can be terrifying when the whole world seems to scream that romantic love is the most important thing in life. I'm aromantic too and i really relate to her... there's always that feeling when your friends get romantic partners and you see them less and less, "if i don't date anyone, am i going to end up alone"? For Mirabelle, just talking to Siffrin and realizing that he can relate to her, at least in some aspects, must feel like a huge relief, even if it doesn't solve all her problems.
@frapollo943 күн бұрын
Ehhhh nah you didn't convince me too much, the fact that her religion encourages doing that is the main thing which makes me think her reaction to Sif idea is weird. Ofc I'm not talking about the being aromantic thing, I'm not one but can understand it may be difficult to detach from the main ideas irl about romantic love, but in her world breaking traditions is seen as something positive and common by her own belief, so like... let's say I'd have liked her resolution more if change god actually didn't normally allow breaking traditions and she came up with the idea of changing by not change by talking to sif.

I'm gonna be honest Frapollo. I know you've worked hard on this video. I know you were upset about it not coming out on time last week. But I'm afraid I can't watch it (just yet anyway). This is a great essay Frap great tone and especially with how you shift your tone to subtly convey different emotions haven't heard of it until now I will take your recommendation to it. I'll look into it later maybe play it personally. might I in turn recommend you Everhood a game with a rather interesting storey and gameplay closer to that of a rhythm like guitar hero. the game is hard and rewarding the visuals are very striking but I will warn you ever hood has a lot of flickering patterns and flashing lights so you need to give an epilepsy warning for it. Also the music is fire! I did have a second video idea but it more depends on your brother and how involved with your KZbin career he wants to be. I was thinking a 100 days of Devil May Cry with your bro teaching you the ropes and helping you get into the series. I think you could end up really enjoying those games though from what I've seen you tend towards RPGS more than hack'n slash games. Thank you for all your effort frapollo I just hope you get better soon sir stay safe and have a rest.
