We went on our first and last Carnival cruise several years ago. It also had visible maintenance issues. But worse than that was the food. We survived on burgers and tacos during that cruise.

Hi Fraser: Some of the comments about your video are unfair. I believe you were simply sharing your impressions of the immediate port area. Having been there, I would agree that the terminal area is all about selling tourist merchandise. Sellers can be quite aggressive. The same can be said of 5th Avenue in Playa Del Carmen. Having said that, there are tourist traps and there is the real Mexico. Pre-covid I spent 5 winters on the Yucatan and thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a large and vibrant ex-pat community of Americans and Canadians living there. There is so much to learn and enjoy with regard to Mexican culture, history, cuisine, and drink. While it is true that you can’t appreciate all of that on a cruise port day, that is also true on many Caribbean cruise stops. Even a really great excursion can only provide an impression of the place. I’m not sure that you deserved some of the defensive comments you received. I watched your video a second time just to make sure I hadn’t missed something. Honestly, I interpreted your comments as reflecting what you observed in the immediate port area and didn’t interrupt it as being a commentary on Mexico as a tourist destination. Stay calm and carry on!

Patricia, thanks so much for watching, and thanks for taking the time to leave this comment! You’re absolutely right - this was a review of the port area, and absolutely not Mexico as a whole - in fact, if people were to watch my other Mexico videos (Puerto Vallarta, for example) they’d know that I love Mexican cruise stops! Thanks again - have a fab day!

Dear Fraser, if one is NOT on a cruise ship, then Cozumel, Merida, Cancun, and the rest of the Yucatan are about 1,000% the very best places to visit, or even in live, in Mexico these days. In Mexico, there is the omnipresence of violent crime almost everywhere. That being said, with a few recent exceptions, the Yucatan has remained far safer and far more charming, than the rest of Mexico. It truly is a shame because Mexico is just one of those very, very special places that should be on anyone's bucket list. You need to get off a cruise ship and go visit San Miguel de Allende, or any of the towns of the Guanajuato; or if you have Mexican friends, then try Veracruz. Explore the Yucatan with a Mexican guide. Mexico City, with all due respect, is one big polluted mess with the worst air on the planet and there are far prettier capitals in Latin America (think Buenos Aires). But the food, the warmth of the locals (just watch out for pickpockets and muggers in the evening), and the constant effusion of color. And if you learned Spanish Spanish in your British schools, it will be practically of no use to you in Mexico. While the local vernacular is indeed Spanish, it has, while respecting traditional Spanish grammar, developed its own vocabulary, unrecognizable to the rest of Latin America. For example, in Spain the question of "where to catch the bus" translates in Mexico to the most vulgar of vulgarities and might you get punched (seriously so). So yes, Cozumel, for the daytripping white gringo from the Mid-West, whose world view is limited to a Big Mac and fries, Cozumel might appear as a tourist trap. To the rest of us, however, it is about as good as it gets in Latin America. Kind regards, Lulú du Furet

This is one of the most pretentious and condescending things I’ve ever read. Also it’s a joke - Cozumel and Cancun are two of the most saturated tourist traps in the country. And San Miguel? The town that’s been totally overtaken with obnoxious boomer gueros with terrible Spanish skills and an army of nasty little lap dogs they drag around the cobbled streets as they pretend to live in a fantasy antebellum Mexico? San Miguel thanks to Americans is almost completely ruined in authenticity and livability. What absolute nonsense. As for Mexico City - it’s one of the largest urban centers of the world with over 26 million people. To reduce its dozens of neighborhoods to a single sweeping generic judgment isn’t just ignorant, it’s insulting.

Interesting.......Cozumel is a humongous expat community to live in, so I'm not surprised it's so so so tourist-trap-y. (and I bought two boxes of scottish shortbread on the Vic to take home with me, one box is already gone LOL) Your little stroll at 10:22 was the twin of walking down the main street in citè portugaise, morocco. Cozumel seems....to use the word again, interesting, though I'm not sure watching it, just how I'd feel about it. Hmm. I love the pay it forward concept....I've found it in nearly every single country I've visited or lived in. It is an amazing thing.

I'm starting to think that there are different ports for different ships. Because my port did look anything like yours. In order to get to the ships when we were at, we had to go upstairs from where you're walking at the main level from the streets, we had to go upstairs and walk through this rundown mall looking place. In order to go through the entire mall and go across to go back down the escalator that it was broken and get out to where the ships were. Before we had to have our card scanned, it looked nothing like your port at all. Your port is way better looking than what ours look like. That's insane, because it was the mall broken down, rundown mall that was being worked on. It looked like it had some damage from possible a hurricane. I don't know that I was almost attempted by myself by 3 other men. It's scary when you think about it. Oh man, it's so scary. I should have known that up, but yeah, that's not at all. We look like it looked like nothing we didn't have look in roofs or any kind of gazebos with a straw roof. We didn't have a waterfall. We didn't have a little miniature walkway. Reserve type thing conservation type thing that's what reminds me of of the beaches in the Northeast, the conservation areas we didn't have any of that at all. We had a bunch of people there trying to give you alcohol samples. I had a bunch of my other people on the cruise ship. Telling me that they're Their tour guide kept trying to get them drunk, which is nerve-wracking when you think about it. But yeah, that's just crazy. That place was absolutely beautiful, but that alone. What I went through my head's not. It's not okay. It's just not okay. Absolutely not okay. And to think that I might not be here right now if it wasn't for those other members, on the other cruise ship. It's like still, I've been back now for a whole entire day and I still can't get over it. And I need to not let it affect me art. Let it affect me to the point where I missed dinner that night. I was so I'm anxious and scared. It was terrifying being put in that situation down a dead end, far away from where the people were Turning around and finding 3 grown a** huge men and with the look on their face, the look on their face is what's killing me right now that's the part that will stay with me walking towards me. Telling me to continue to walk down there. It's fine, that's the right way. Just keep walking and you'll see It's, it almost ruined my whole experience. My very first vacation email in my entire forty three years, I turned forty three, the day that we left port out of galveston, which was on the 23rd of december

Oh wow, sorry you're getting these comments. There are the touristy trap parts of mexico and that includes a lot of the immediate coastal areas- even if people travel to mexico to stay (i.e. not on a cruise ship), there are so many who stay at resorts etc. I'm cruising to cozumel in December and excited they added a ruins tour to the excursion list- I think once you are further inland, you get to actually experience the people and the culture and not the tourist trap-esque ports. The only other cruise I have been on was a school trip in 2008 (Carnival Ecstasy - RIP!) and we came to cozumel and as someone whose only other experience in Mexico was Juarez (inland) and Cabo San Lucas (resort), my impression of cozumel was fairly similar in the port area. All this to say, there is nothing inherently wrong with a tourist trap, it's just merely something to be aware of... Also I appreciate the ship spotting - how fun!

Hi Frasier. Great vids btw, ploughing my way through. You have a very addictive way of presenting and inspiring me for my next cruise, hopefully a World Cruise taking my 3 Turkish friends. Looking for a good deal. Anyhoo... Cruise channels _never_ tell me if l can sit in the Sauna free - obviously, no treatments. I think we could use the Sauna free on Costa every day? That was years ago before covld. What was annoying is ships that made us pay eg MSC weren't charging the gymsters who popped in the Sauna after their workouts. Of course, the gym is free, so they assumed the Sauna was too but noone policed it. It just seemed unfair because l wasn't using the gym that we should be charged. So clarity would be a plus please if you / anyone knows the position. Very frustrating since l'm paying for 4. (Expat Brit, Kyrenia, North Cyprus.)
@FraserAtSea
@FraserAtSea 6 ай бұрын
Hello! This is a good question, and something I can completely understand being annoyed by, especially if you’re paying for it! On MSC, you’ll find the sauna within the thermal suite, and the gym is usually elsewhere. In other words, you’ll need to pay to be in there. There are some ships with free saunas though - you just need to do your research to fine them…!!

I just came back from Cozmel Actually, we did a very first cruise Vacation hour with Disney cruise. We did a 6 night from Galveston to the Caribbean Western Caribbean, and back with 2 stops at grand cayman and cozmel port stop looked nothing like that. We were yeah, on the side between the mainland and the Islands. I'm assuming that we all go to the same place. I went to a place called dolphinaris for my dolphin swim, and I could see the ship from where we were at a ways up from us, though I could also see Royal Caribbean cruise ships. So I'm wondering if that's what side you're on which is farther north from where we were at, it's like a lot farther north, like on the other side of dolphinaris, so if we're looking at the island. In between the mainland and the island you guys were to the right, so i'm wondering if there's 2 different port stops? Because where I came out at looks absolutely nothing remotely close to what you walked out at. We didn't have a duty free or anything like that. We walked out on the pier, the little dog thing, and then he walked through. I don't know what I got. I don't even know it's weird. We were at it's like a little mall like a shopping mall. But that the escalators were broken and we were about, I don't know if I've got 3 minute taxi ride from the port to where dolphinaris was. We were told that we didn't have to wait for the rest of the party that we went with. I made the mistake of going back after the dolphin swim even though the package that I paid for and also included lunch and either snorkeling or a paddleboat or a kayak ride. I just wanted to go back to my family. I swam with the dolphins, and I wanted to go back with my family because I missed them. And I went alone so I took a taxi thing back by myself. I had another cruise ship that was next to us. Called the mcs, which was huge, they made our Disney day. Magic wicked small. And we were talking on there that I shared a cab ride with them and I got out I was getting lost. I couldn't figure out how to get to the other side. Like I literally had to crossover, but I had to go up and cross over to get to the ships, I had asked one of the vendors for directions and It was 2 guys, and they gave me directions. Only they weren't directions to the Ship. It was a dead end where I ended up at and before he finished, he had whistled to another guy across the way, and it pointed to me. And I should have known right then, and there that that was right bad news. So I went and I looked at him like this looks like it's closed off like it's You know you're not supposed to go here. This is being worked on, and as I turned around, the 3 guys were right behind me because it wasn't 2 Now it was 3, they were right behind me and it was a dead end and I was away from where the main shopping place was, and I was screwed now. I had nothing with me. I was just me and my body, I didn't have any cards. I didn't have a pocketbook, nothing like that, because when I had I couldn't take my phone or anything we couldn't take pictures. So yeah. I don't know. I don't know I when I turned around. And I said, I don't think this is the right way they kept telling me, oh no, just keep going. It's just a little ways around that way, and you'll be all set and the ship's right there. Keep in mind. This is the total opposite direction of where my ships were, and I knew it, and I should have known better to be in that situation to begin with. But I ended up in that situation if it wasn't for the couple, that was on the taxi cab. Ride with me that we're on the other ship, seeing me go down that way and either they thought I was going the wrong way, or they thought I was going the right way. And so they came regardless of the fact they came and they had said you were right back here and I had said, actually, no, I'm trying to find out how to get to the ship when they told me to come with them and Some how I was able to get past the 3 men that were blocking my way to them. And I was free so I can't imagine what would have happened if they never showed app, and we were told by our waiter that the cruise before us a rider. If you want to call it a cruiser, they were rocked in the same place that I was at And the people that were on the ship with us as well. I was talking to them about my experience there. And they were telling me that that they were being haggled and verbally, abused by the vendor shop, guys, there, they were literally calling them puntas and all that other stuff I mean, I know what that is what that means it means b****, so Making fun of his mother or saying "is that how your face always looks" and blah blah blah, because they weren't buying anything from their shop. They were rating passengers as they walk by, because I speak a little Spanish and I knew what they were saying so as the women walked by, they were literally rating them. It was really scary. I will say it was scary. It was beautiful. Oh my God Was it a beautiful place though? I had no idea that there was mayan ruins there, which I think was awesome. And I wish I would have known that, but now for next time, if I do decide to go there again, which I'd like to give them another chance just with my husband this time and not by myself. I would definitely like to check out. The mayan ruins to know that the priestess, whatever you want to call her from the mayans, she would go from the mainland and cross the Yucatan channel without any modern technology, and they would fight across the currents and stuff just to get to the island so that she can pray to this on goddess. It's pretty cool. It's really cool. Beautiful lot, is Where our boat was, there was in the water arm, like it reminded me of a saltwater tank with a zebra looking fish and a fish with the bright blue fins. On the other side of the dock, we were walking on. There was a huge pod or school whatever you want to call it of barracudas, which I thought hunted and swam alone Because they are predators, I had no idea that they swam in schools, it was crazy. You could just make them out into the because it would be the water would be dark and then you could see the blue. You know, it was dark with it where the seaweed was and stuff, and then it would get really crystal clear blue, and you can see them and just make them out just crazy. There's about 20 of them. It's really cool. I will say I was sad to leave there. But my experience on Cosmo walking through the shopping mall which was on the Disney port. I don't know if that's completely different from this one. Because it does not look anything like where I came out at was very well. It's very scary. I'm walking back alone. It was not something that I ever want to be put back into again. I should have known better but I figured I could see the ship from where I was at and I'd be fine to think what would have happened if they never showed up? And I wish that I knew their names, because I would love to thank them in person. Or at least give them a shout out on here, because they saved my life. Potentially, they potentially saved my life.I just know that a lot of people that I spoke with having some bad experiences there, and I hope to god that that hasn't become the new norm because it was beautiful. Also, it's not Aztec, sweetheart, it's called the mayans. I don't think they're 2 of the same right pretty cool though, isn't it? That's where she would go and pray to the sun God I wish I knew that was there. I would totally totally done that. Even though the dolphin swim was absolutely amazing. And also too about the shopkeepers. Yeah, they've constantly hound. You and try to get you drunk. Absolutely, try to get you drunk. You not feeling safe, was your intuition? I'm trying to tell you something because it wasn't. I feel like I'm gonna go write a letter to Disney about this because this was not, I hate to think that would have happened. To somebody else, if I don't say anything you know, I don't want to completely s*** on an entire region because it was amazing and beautiful, a few bad eggs spoil the bunch! Forgive me. 2 of my the pose doesn't make sense with some of the words I'm doing the text to talk feature. And it is yet to get me down to a t some of the words end up coming out completely right wrong, and it's too long of a post for me to go back and reread it, because i'm lazy anyways, thank you for this video

Fraser you are not qualified to judge. I am an American who lives in Cozumel and this is an amazing city. If you want to know a city you need to visit for more than a couple of hours 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Hi Deb, thanks for the message. I aim to show a place through the eyes of a cruiser visiting for a few hours. However, as I say in the video, I did really enjoy my time here - always good to explore somewhere new!

Anyone who travels on a cruise ship and calls it a vacation has issues. No surprise here. Mere hours per stop and the rest of the time is spent drinking and gambling and eating garbage from a buffet

@@a.leehilliard4716 Just wondering why you were watching a video of somebody on a vacation on a cruise ship?

A cruise is the definition of a vacation. No one is going to a cruise port like Cozumel for the cultural experience. If you don’t like cruising and and the massive commercialism that goes with it, do something else like like promote local businesses or something. I remember Cozumel before it became one giant cruise mall and I don’t much care for it now. So I don’t spend a cent in places like that. I love doing the pay it forward thing! 💖

I'm assuming you guys were on the same side of the island because if you look at the picture of the island when you get off the ship, we had a picture of the island made out of wood and it was dark almost Blackwood, it showed where everything was and it showed where the all the cruise ships went Which was in between the mainland and the island so I'm assuming we were all in the same place. Where were you from the airport? Because we were again facing the island with the mainland behind us, the airport was to our left. I'm wondering if you guys were the ones that were on the other side of the dolphin place that I went to, which was right on the Shoreline, it was a beautiful dolphin place, it was amazing. There were 2 places that had dolphins in it. This one was dolphineras, and it was an absolutely gorgeous, gorgeous place. They also had a lookout place with a restaurant that literally came right out and up over the water so that you could see down below, which of course people had to pay for in order to be able to watch their family members interact with the dolphins, which kind of sucked, but whatever that's why I was alone, because we couldn't afford it, because we paid $159 U. S just for me to do the dolphin swim, but that like I said, that was also to include lunch, Snorkeling, if I wanted to Kayaking or paddleboardin. But like I said, I was alone and I just did the dolphin swim and I wanted to go back and tell my kids and my husband about it.

We had a dinosaur too on the eyes was standing up, and it was a bronchiosaurus, like it was absolutely a bronchiosaurus, that's cool. I thought that was just a Disney thing. Good to know that other people do them as well. It was one that I couldn't figure out what the hell it was at. All whatsoever, I think it might have been a gorilla, but I don't I couldn't figure out I got pictures of it though. That was probably the best part of the whole Cruz, too, is when they did turndown service. And you had your towel design with the chocolate. Mints, it's pretty cool. Pretty cute. Now I gotta make my own bed. I have to turn down my own bed.I don't get cute little animal towels nobody's putting chocolate mints on my bed. Boo I did not like leaving the Caribbean. Before the yucathen and coming back into the Gulf, the dirty a** Gulf. Oh, it's so dirty. It's like toilet water compared to the beautiful blue. The ocean of the Caribbean reminds me of blue, cool aid, well, like somebody took one of those blue egg dyes from the Easter egg kits and dropped it in the ocean. Beautiful, absolutely, gorgeous. We had to run out a lot of storms too. Though like s*** like run for our lives, we almost didn't make it out of the last one coming home, which was awesome and exciting. We had a lot of rolling white caps they were pretty intense coming back every night was choppy and rough but awesome. I got off the ship, and I felt like I was still moving
