When i got laid off over the coof, i decided i was well and truly done with the nonsense of the modern world and workplaces. Ever since ive been independendtly employed doing lawncare and landscaping and ive been gardening at home, and doubling my gardening every year so far. I think i really want to start my own nursery or something along these lines. Started just growing vegetables and stuff, and this year ive moved onto blueberry bushes and roses on top of all my tomatoes, peppers, peas, beets, etc. I took 12 rose cuttings yesterday to try and root into new plants, maybe THIS is the first step of my future rose nursery i never knew i was going to start?

Three week update on my rose cuttings since i just got the Heart, 8 successful rose cutting are just now pushing their first new leaves after dropping the original ones they had left to start with! And after i did those, i went and bought some rooting hormone, and did a ton more! plus a multitude of trees!

​@@7thsluglord363I'm so happy for you! I started growing my own food during the coof for fear that at one point the powers that be wouldn't let certain people go to grocery stores anymore. It turned out to be great therapy for the mental issues I suffered as part of the measures. Eventually I got fired as I couldn't keep up at work anymore and I continued growing more food and forage, whilst helping to take care of my sick father in his last months (blood clots and cancer, no idea how he got that...) I will be using my inheritance to get a homestead of sorts and selling fruit, vegetables and/or trees (not sure yet, experimenting growing different things in my mother's house while cleaning up the place etc). There is NO WAY I will ever go back to having a job, let alone an office job. Looking back, I don't understand how I lasted for so many years, apart from having wonderful colleagues I enjoyed working with.

I love the reminder to not only start small, but to just actually start! I have been saving glass jars for my cut flower displays and sowing seeds into yoghurt pots. Now I just have to start telling people to watch this space for seedlings, herbs, eggs, rabbit manure and cut flowers, it’s definitely hard to commit to producing!

This is just the right video for me. I'm a scientist, my first job was working in three greenhouses growing plants to test herbicides on. I was never happier growing plants there! We even had a rice greenhouse. Fast forward 40 years, I'm disabled and growing plants in my little quarter acre. And I've never been happier! It's my first year working the soil that has lain follow on my family's home for 40 years. My first goal was to get the bees and insects back, which are only 10% of what they once were in California. Well that went overboard because we didn't have enough beneficial predators. I'm now nurturing the beneficial predators and I'm keen on propagating plants, extremely keen. My number one goal is to get the insects back, I'm so saddened that we're at a 10% level compared to when I was a child. But I have to sell all the plants I'm excited to propagate, The silver leaf sunflowers that are drought resistant, the milkweed plants that are so essential for the butterflies, borage... In suburbia in California it's a landscape of home Depot plants which are dreadfully uniform. My urge is to grow real plants, nurture beneficial insects and support the bird populations.

I'm 2 years into starting a permaculture nursery .. on a shoestring budget (but we're barefoot 😁) and at this point, it is more about gathering propagation material and developing skills for me. KZbin lets me show people, potential customers and friends, how far along we have come in that journey - and I've already made a few sales. I've shipped more plants than I have sold, and mainly the reason for that is to make sure that when I ship live plants to a paying customer, they will have the best chance at arriving in a healthy state, ready to transplant .. and I can get updates on those plants as time passes, to see how they are doing. 🌼🌳 I've THOUGHT about ordering in plants to get a jump on sales .. but I know everything about every plant that goes out NOW, and I could not say that if the plants came from another nursery, especially one that deals in bulk. If it takes longer to get to profitability, so be it - I want to be able to stand behind my product.

Thanks for your insights - and great YT channel, by the way! Lots of topics, and I do love how you're taking your viewers and customers along for the ride. I can completely understand taking it slow and locking down your processes before trying to expand. That's like the opposite what many entrepreneurs seem to be modeling. I can't say much about your local suppliers, but I've definitely found it helpful to buy in young plant starts to help get my season going. I already start hundreds of variety by cuttings, and dozens from seed - so I don't have any pangs of guilt about potting up some interesting varieties from other local propagators.

Just start! Is the best advice. The sooner you start, the quicker you begin to realize what your actual skills are and what you need to learn. I completely agree. If you don't know where to start... Get some seeds, a small bag of potting soil, some coffee cups or other small containers, and get those seeds in there. We all start the exact same way and the more we try, the more we learn to do more. As a 5 year old kid I started planting seeds from whatever fruits and vegetables we got from the grocery store or off our trees and stuck them in the ground. Growing up in farm country I just watched what the farmers were doing and my dad. I tried it and sometimes it worked and other times it didn't, then I would try to figure out what happened. Too much water, not enough. One thing I learned right away was that soil will grow stuff.... I never used fertilizer, just the soil in the yard. However, I did understand that all the winter leaves and grass clippings got spaded into the soil every year, because that was one of my chores, and wherever I spaded, that soil was always dark black and full of huge night crawlers. When I used that soil, my plants did much better. Of course today we have so many resources to draw from. Well done Jason! Watching you develop your place of influence on your farm and here on KZbin is a pleasure to watch and be a part of. All of the different milestones you are achieving really blossom into some very interesting new things. Although I have several decades of experience in growing, I always enjoy learning a different perspective or way of doing similar things. I hope you realize how many different types of growers you have influenced just in this video alone. As I read through the comments I see people inspired to take the next steps from thinking about it to actually getting started. What a great compliment to you.👌 Hopefully people will watch this video multiple times because there is so much information and experience that you have shared here. I may be running an 85 acre diversified farm, but everything you mention here is absolutely true no matter what a person might want to grow, produce, and sell. You are a natural because you just show what you know and that is what people really want. When I teach roasting or coffee processing people are fascinated, but no-one really wants to do it because they don't want to make a mistake with someone else's coffee. I've actually had people tell me I shouldn't give away my secrets, but the truth is roasting is roasting, just like growing is growing. Once you understand, you only get better. I like growing fruit trees over smaller potted plants takes a couple years to get them fruiting but the maintenance is so much easier an if you prune them right it will produce more than u ever could imagine juss be cautious on cold nights they could freeze depending on the tree

I am in the process of transitioning over from my full time job to just farming hopefully soon. My wife and I are on a 35 acre organic family farm. We restored the barn and setup a barn store with soaps, pickled goods, jams. We have alpacas, beehives, pet pot belly pig, we grow vegetables and grow hemp to make our own cbd products. We also do farm tours. I work full time and work on the farm after work and weekends. Farming is what I really enjoy. I like interacting with people. Its definitely alot of hard work and you have to think outside the box!

I do a three day perennial and succulents plant sale out of my yard every year. Have for last 22 years. I grow all the plants my self. Pot up about 1300 each year. Sell all but a couple hundred. Some years have less left over. It is work in April and May but we’ll worth it. Cost is minimal as I make my own compost and pot everything myself. Use recycled pots. Dig from my my own garden. Well worth the work.

My retirement property is in a different zone and I was told that citrus couldn’t grow there due to the colder temps in winter. Then I discovered there are a couple of citrus that do grow in colder climates and located one plant with fruit. I learned a few methods of growing the seeds and it turns out the easiest was the best. Now I have around 100+ plants that are a year old and probably 100 babies that I’ll start selling on Etsy. I won’t be retiring for a number of years and by that time, my “first borns” should be close to fruiting and I’ll transfer them up there.

While any viable citrus seeds you sow can become beautiful, productive plants, hybrid plants-if they produce fruit-the fruit will not be the same in taste or appearance as the one it came from. (or may not even fruit at all) Almost all Citrus trees sold today are grafted or rooted cuttings of the mother plant.

I love love love this video. Thank you so much for this. I work part-time as a mental health therapist in private practice. I value being self-employed mainly for the sense of freedom and creative license and the flexibility. I am a big indoor houseplant enthusiast and have been for many years now. Since the indoor houseplant industry boomed in 2020, I excitedly collected plants that suddenly became more accessible to me and with that, my collection grew. I began to propagate and sell common and rare houseplants locally. To my surprise, it has taken off quite well. Since 2020 I’ve got into outdoor gardening (vegetable and other plants) and I’m super keen on learning rose gardening, which is why I follow your channel. I have several rose varieties now and am considering learning how to prop and sell my outdoor plants (maybe left over veggies but I might give those to family lol). I’m an industrial, self motivated kind of gal that only sometimes, needs a little push to encourage me to go for it. Thanks for the push, I can relate to the process of slow transformation of hobby turning small business and who knows where I’ll be in the near future! P.s. You're very kind to share your information. I'm hoping you can advise us. We're wanting a change in life. We're in our early 60s and wanting to start a business with plants. I'm qualified with a RHS Hort Gen from 1998 so could get insurance cover. We don't want to run a shop or stall or a garden centre. We want to specialise in fruit shrubs/plants and, vegetable plants possibly grown hydroponically (just testing that growing at the moment). But, happy to use soil too. We're thinking of just supplying shops and, maybe holding occasional plant sale from home to locals. Now, we live in a semi detached house in West Yorkshire. But, we'd like to have land in the country to use to grow. But we're just not sure how to get on that path. Maybe rent a detatched house with land. Can you let us know if its worth the time doing such a business?

Hi Jason. Very nicely presented, and I agree with your comments, especially about specializing and starting small. Finding what to specialize in is also very important. That is something I had to learn the hard way. Hint: One thing I learned from doing a couple of small back-yard nursery businesses is that people are much more prone to buy plants with flowers on them, or with fruit on them, that they can see at the time of purchase. One comment I would like to offer for those considering a plant sale business is that whatever does not sell right away, will continue to grow and get bigger and will ultimately be worth more money. Of course, this will mean you have to water it, weed it, and step it up when the time comes, so it also requires more work. Some things to learn are: Using woven ground cover to reduce roots growing into the ground. Also using a tension wire at an appropriate height to attached drip lines and hold the plants from being blown over by wind. Using drip irrigation vs overhead irrigation. Use of pre-emergents (and which plants not to use it on). Benefits of growing from cuttings vs. buying liners. Benefits of ordering your soil mix by the truck loads. When to step up plants to avoid roots circling in your pots, especially for larger plants and trees. Having a separate "display" area for your finished plants that are ready for immediate sale. Also, depending what you like to do, but you may also consider an "installation" option for trees and larger plants. This can be purely optional with a sign that specifies your basic prices on the sign to customers so they will see it before asking. And many more things...

I am at the begining of creating my own. I will specialised in terrarium plants, african violet et more uncommun/rare caftus/succulante. Try to be open all year around, that something is really lacking there. Feel like i have the right mind set, i just need to focus over de selling too. It's the own i am lacking... i have social anxiety it's pretty hard, but for my passion, it's easier

This is amazing and when you mentioned about not waiting until you are ready, I had to stop and think because my initial reaction was, I couldn't possibly begin now because of the need to pay down some debt. However, I remembered that in a way I have begun because I am currently growing fruits, veggies, berries, and herbs inside my apartment in grow tents to eat and sell at the farmer's market. I realized that I had started in a limited capacity without realizing it.

Thank you for this! This video is exactly what I needed. I fell in love with gardening about 4 years ago and I had never been a gardener before or grew up learning it. It was all new to me. Fast forward to now & I decided to quit my job and give it a go. I am still very small scale but I know I will get there. I will be in my first market here in about 2/3 weeks and I’m terrified and excited at the same time. I can’t wait to keep learning and to join my local community.

Very good tips and I appreciate your experience and advice. I don't want to sell plants but I'm just getting interested in starting a vegetable garden for my own family to use. I love the tip about not waiting until you're ready - we currently live in an RV and travel full time, and I could have let that prevent me from starting a "real garden" until we settle down in a house, but instead I started a small container garden this year right here in the RV! I'm learning so much from KZbin and from gardening myself this year and that will give me such a leg up once I have the space to plant a proper garden some day.

Hello mate As always another thought provoking video. Diffinaltly great advice. I used to breed quail and bantams on a fair scale (5000+ birds) every year. I found selling at the local cattle market was a great way of selling and making contacts I'm starting this year to sell plants etc there. It's took two years growing to get plants that are a nice sellable size and to have a roll over of stock. In East Anglia here in the UK there are probably 8 or 10 such places. Also we have loads of weekend boot sales which is a easy cheap way of selling plants etc Thanks for your videos and the help you give us mate 👍 you're a star

As I live in the mountains and have no car? How can I entice those old people living in the nearby village to buy my plants/seedlings, etc?

I know you're skeptical of the internet, but at least for now, it can be a useful tool to help you market plants. Things like Craiglist or Facebook Marketplace can be really useful for your kind of small-scale growing and marketing.

I love trees and it just so happens that after I stopped cutting every part of my yard the bird droppings and the near by trees brought me many trees that need to be either sold or transplanted and so I got to wondering if could sell them. Then after working with plants for a little while and seeing how much I love them I wondered if I had a future in this arena. My hope is to provide glorious plants for the best possible price so that the world can be a more beautiful place and people can be much happier and healthier people. I am trying to do this but the biggest problem is distribution. Tough to reach your customers including payment. Many people don’t use cash. I have work at this for several years in Victoria. I am a seasoned business person but will stop trying because, trying to reinvent myself is near impossible. Fun as a hobby, but that’s it. Also customer needs are so varied. My family raised geraniums for decades. I have taken over 100,000 cuttings. Quite honestly, it’s a waste of time. Just my thoughts. Funny, I drive by nurseries and they are jammed. For me, my time is valuable. Possible customers are not loyal, etc. Thank you for the thoughts though.

Thanks Douglas. Definitely no shortage of challenges, and of course it all depends on what fits into your life, plans and the local market. I've found Square to be a pretty good solution to most any payment processing issue - and I'm sure their competitors are comparable. Facebook groups and marketplace have also been helpful on the distribution end. Still figuring it all out ourselves, and so long as we're still enjoying the process we'll keep chugging along.

I have fun growing well rooted roses but really don't have the touch of rooting from cuttings which requires tremendous commitment and nurturing ( after personally failed a thousand times, lol.) Accidental success happens for home gardeners that's for sure but to me, it really takes certain special people to be growers. SO my ultimate respect to all the growers out there !

Going into our second year as a small nursery and greenhouse business. Your videos have been tremendously helpful! Thank you for not being like the clickbait "get rich by taking thousands of arborvitae cuttings and selling them on the weekends!" channels. The more experience I get, the more I get frustrated with those types of channels. They don't even begin to cover all the work and expenses required.
