It wouldn't be my first choice to transplant a rose plant during winter, but if the circumstances call for it, it can be done. This video is taken in mid-December, as I prepare the space in my rose garden for installation of a new arbor. The basics of transplanting a rose in winter are the same as other times of year - try to keep as many healthy roots as you can, and trim back the top to keep the rose in root/shoot balance. In this case, I'll be "storing" the rose over winter in some loose potting soil, and then only planting in early spring.
If you find these videos useful, there are a few little things you can do to help me out:

oh wow, thank you for this video, I planted some roses 2 years ago and I'm pretty sure where I put them they don't like it because they dont get enough sun (house shades it almost all day, southern exposure). I didn't think of that when I planted them. I want to take them out and put them in pots on my back porch until I can have a garden made in my backyard where it gets the sun (northern exposure). Now I know I can, phew. Thanks again.!!

Thank you for this information! I am in north east Texas, today is Winter Solstice and the Star of Bethlehem will shine tonight, so I had grave concerns regarding moving my 3 Nacogdoches (found) rose bushes. I have a barn coming and it will be blocking the roses and the area will be too slim to dig and work once the barn arrives - which may go over the area where the rose bushes are growing now. I do have potting soil and 3 large pots, so that is what I will do! I will keep them repotted on my pavilion and on really cold nights, move into one of the barns~ You are appreciated!

Hi there - between once it's in the pot and replanting in the spring, do you need to do anything with it, such as watering it? Thanks

Hi Jason! Will an unheated cellar in the basement or a garden shed work? Both of these don't get any light. And do you have to keep watering it? Thank you.

If they're quite cool, the roses will go into dormancy and won't need much in the way of light or water. If it's a bit warmer, they'll need some of both. Either way, I'd check each week or so to make sure the pots are drying out completely.

Can you advise me how to prune a ground cover rose called Nozomi. Small leaf. Single pale pink flowers. VERY mean thorns. Thank you

Hi Sarah. I'd minimize pruning to only the essential - if it's straying too far from your desired shape/direction or if there are dead/diseased stems.

Should I keep my potted rose in garage and should I give a little water . Last time I brought my potted rose inside my house and with the heating inside they were give new shoots and ended up with bugs on the plant. I am in zone 5

Thanks Sherly - yes, an unheated garage or shed with very little water. Keep it relatively dormant. The shelter is just to keep the cold wind from damaging the stems.

Builders are clearing an overgrown garden and they’ve cut down a climbing rose to within 3 - 4” from the ground ! Will I be able to save it being so low, currently the ground is frozen.

Hi Paul. A mature vigorous rose has a good chance of resprouting form dormant buds down low. Don't give up just yet.

Is it safe to cut back my roses now during winter or is that a huge no no? It’s completely deprived, leggy about 5-6 ft tall with just 3 tall branches. I’m working on my side of the house and need to move my roses. I can definitely put in a pot, but not sure if this is safe.

I usually wait until the winter has done all of its damage, so I only need to cut back once in spring. But if the work needs to go ahead, I've had good success with the pot in a sheltered location.

I have an opportunity to get a bunch of rose bushes for free. Not sure what variety. Should I trim back branches, then use this method? I'm in Texas, zone 8B

I'd trim anything dead, diseased, damaged, badly crossing or out of balance, but overall there's no harm to leaving some long stems in place so long as they don't get in the way of your work.

Do you water it when it is in the garage over winter?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Not much. I check mine in the unheated greenhouse every week - but that's because they're getting some (winter) sun. Inside (cool and darker) I would check every 2 to 3 weeks. If the soil is pale, light colored and/or shrinking away from the pot, you should add some water.
