The reason the pastry was so different on this is because it's made with suet which is itself made by rubbing together flour and beef dripping (rendered fat), takes me back to when my Nan made suet pudding in the 80's

Have you ever reviewed MRE's ? Being retired from the Army after 23 years, I've pretty much ran the gamut on military food, starting in the 70's. When MRE's were first introduced, they plain sucked. Most of the food was dehydrated, so you could have a beef patty "cookie" (MMMmmm,,,) The old "K" or "C" rations in cans were far superior. After about 10 years, the MRE makers finally started to get it together. I once went TDY (temporary duty) to Ft. Polk, Louisiana, and actually had beef tips in a red wine sauce, to serve either over wild brown rice or egg noodles (?), and it was worth the $19 you would have had to pay in a restaurant. Remember, though, that your average MRE has about 4000 calories. No kiddin'. I'd like to see you do a review of MRE's.

It's not pud, sounds like mud, it's pud, sounds like wood. Properly made Snake and Pygmy Pudding (AKA Kate and Sidney / Nut and Bolt) is a strictly home-made experience. Neither of these products are truly representative of the dish they attempt to mimic. They are however very good for lazy / drunk people with almost zero effort. I have two pies in my cupboard. ;o)

Microwave is ok, but the pastry never cooks Fray Bentos is Good (Southerners), but up here in Northern England we eat Hollands Pies. www.hollandspies.co.uk/. It's the staple food of Northerners. The English love a steak and kidney which is normally cooked in a bowl with a cloth all around it and simmered in a pot of boiling water suspended just above the water level. The suet pastry is meant to stay soggy just like dumplings. The steak and kidney pie should have a flskey top and slightly soggy sides. Both quite different. To unmould the pud we normally run a blunt knife around to release it. P.S. Pud is pronounced POOD not PUDD.

When I saw this I was instantly reminded of what you said of the pie dough and I thought "Uh-oh..."; good to see you've since been put straight. Anyhow, didn't the instructions say to poke a hole in the top? -in our army rations there was bread pudding with fruit sauce (I don't remember which fruit) which also didn't come out the tin if you didn't read the instructions carefully. :D

It is Suet Crust - which is really not a pastry. So it's always soggy but very tasty! Traditionally, Suet Crust puddings (yes not American custardy puddings) - are wrapped in cloth and boiled/steamed - so you won't get crusty golden toppings ever.

Literally just before you compared the pastry to a dumpling. I was thinking that exact same thing. It's been many years since I've eaten a meat pudding. Way back To my childhood. Weekends spent with grandparents. Grannies home made ones. Traditionally there the steam/boiled in Pan of water. The same way a traditional Xmas pudding is cooked. Much like dumplings the pastry is made with beef suet. Fray bentos is saving this from going the same way as the dodo.

'Pud' is short for pudding and should be pronounced as you would pronounce 'good'. As you correctly point out, the pastry in a pudding is traditionally steamed so it is very different from the flakey stuff you had from the open topped steak and kidney pie. As for your statement that 'people in the UK love their soggy dough', well, this would be the equivalent of me saying that people in the US love their microwaved hot dogs. I don't remember the last time I ate a pie of any description - and it would certainly not have been anything that came in a tin.

I learned something new today ! I did not fully understand your explanation of the amount of sodium being different from salt, as I am from Europe just as your can of pie, and in Europe the term salt and sodium is used interchangeably on food packages, but according to Yahoo, in Australia, only the sodium content is declared on packages, and table salt is 40 % sodium by weight, and that is apparently also the case in the USA. I did know that table salt is a mixture of different salts and some trace elements ( minerals ) but mostly " sodium chloride " " NaCl " ( sodium " Na " and chloride " Cl " in unknown ( to me ) proportions ) usually cheap salt mined from the ground, and less so in artisan ( expensive ) salt made from evaporated seawater (ex. Maldon ) Looking forward to the next " home cooked meal " video

It tends to be older people who like steamed pies/pudding like that. Just ask a viewer to take you shopping in a UK supermarket, them pay them for it and postage, there's a much larger need and cheaper way to send than airmail. Heinze do a syrup sponge pudding like the spotteddick. Like you I remember pre microwave when they had to be boiled for about forty minutes, but they tasted better. An allergy to gluten ruined my pudding delights. We have Pukka pies too, but they tend to be fresh ready to eat or reheat at home, also very common in fish and chip shops.

Never knew the British to like soggy dough...... This was a WWII product. It has almost died out but stores still stock it because the food like substance underneath the dodgy pastry has a 500 year half life like plutonium........ It was designed for soldiers in the trenches during WWII like their corn beef etc...... This stuff is beyond gross. I'm sure the Uruguayans love it. Which is where the company is based...... British and Irish ate this muck because it was a seemingly a cheap way to get protein into a diet when money was scarce...... I have a terrier dog who won't even eat this.....

The pudding pies are sort of like steamed pies, not baked. Get yourself a recipe off the net and make one... it should pretty easy to get the ingredients. Do you get suet in America? www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/steakandkidneypuddin_93128

that is what we in the uk call a steak pudding , the pastry isnt so much a pastry but a case made of suet wich is basicaly a uk meat fat used in making dumplings so you were spot on with your description of that. we have fray bentos pies everywhere and are very cheap. i would definatly try the chicken pies too. happy to post some uk things to you if yu ever want to try. love the channel and thank god we dont have that dollar tree dirt over here buddy. will keep watching and enjoying your channel . all the best Wolfepit

Fray Bentos is a city in Uruguay, Fact. I think it's where we used to import beef from in the UK, might be wrong.

This looks awful to me. When I saw the picture of it I was like ok, maybe it is not gonna be like a dog food, but it turned out to be even worse. How come that such a thing can be edible, or even tasting good??

Untill the early nineties steak and kidney puddings like these came in the British army ration packs, They were in steel cans and were heated by boiling in hot water. They were commonly known as Babies Heads.

Can you please do a Smart Food or Michelina's video please? I was looking at the Michelina's website trying to find reviews of their buffalo chicken snackers and people were saying "this is like a restaurant meal" so I would love for you to do a video on them :D

Hi Larry! Just looked up the price and would rather eat out for the same amount of money and can get an entire meal. But it's a good presentation. Thanks

the "pastry" is a play on a suet pudding casing, if you ever turn a bit gorden ramsey you could do worse than give this one a try: www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/steakandkidneypuddin_93128

That might honestly be the most disgusting looking thing that I have ever had the displeasure of laying my eyes on, how can someone have little enough self respect to put this into their body?
