@Montragon297 жыл бұрын
BASE452 LIVE Gyros in Greek means around or round(because it rotates, goes round and round..). In Greece lambs are traditionally skewered and pit roasted whole on open fires or put into earthen pots and baked inside wood fired ovens sealed with clay so gyros is made out of pork belly...Basically we want the better lamb meat in a more tasty way cooked than put it on a doner with lots of spices. You should be around at Easter...every household busts out the bbq and roasts lambs and pieces of sheep and porkchops on a skewer called souvla (means giant skewer in greek)

Can I ask few questions? Is it really spelled donair. And who sells it? Because it’s Turkish. It would be weird if other people sell it like you go to a Japanese restaurant but there are Mexican people selling the food.
@Ihaveblueyebrows6 жыл бұрын
Mingo 101 it's really spelled donair. And it's made by Lebanese but looks pretty much identical to this. Google it if you don't believe me. But Nova Scotia is known for it. And they don't make it in other parts of Canada like they do here. When Nova Scotians leave they miss it. And it's the first meal people get when they come visit.

From the late '70s, until the early '90s, there was a gentleman at the Green Dragon Farmer's Market, in Ephrata, PA, who made "German Döner Bretzel Treats". They were essentially a very well seasoned combination of veal, lamb, pork, and dark meat turkey, marinated, in a mixture of seven spices. Their purveyor would tell you what the spices were, because it is a common German recipe; what isn't common, is the balance of what was in the marinade (he never revealed that part of the secret). He started the horizontal rotisserie at 5:00 AM on Fridays, and would begin serving around 10:30 AM. He made two, 50-lb "meat mountains" each Friday, and sold out before 2:00 PM with regularity. They were served on "Bretzel Naan", a bread similar to a cross between naan, and a soft pretzel. They were served with a sauteed cabbage and onion mixture, laden with paprika and a mild "citrus vinaigrette" oil/dressing. Damn those things were good!

In the Netherlands we have a nice dish with döner. Its called Kapsalon (euhm translation barber shop 😂 cause a barber invented it) They fry fries or potato slices. Lay those in a ovenproof little basket, top it with döner then cheese. Shove it in the oven to melt the cheese. Then you can finish it with what you like, lettuce, union, peppers, pickles etc, and of course sauce. I use garlic sauce. It's a Caloriebomb but oh so goood.

Draco döner is a turkish word and turkish and finnish are very similar languages actually. One of the food you don't want to let sit. When everything mixes together over time the salad gets mushy, the bread gets soggy and everything gets room temperature. The meat needs to be slightly crunchy from the grill and hot, salad and sauce needs to be cold and the salad fresh. Let's say it doesn't age as good over night as pizza. And over here in Germany it's usually lamb/calf or chicken, cabbage, onions, mixed green salad with cucumber and tomato, and tzatziki, sometimes cocktail sauce and some hot paste. Oh and the ö, can easily pronounce it like in normal US english. similar to the u in burger.

In the Netherlands we have Kapsalon (literally 'barber shop') is a Dutch food item consisting of fries, topped with döner or shawarma meat, grilled with a layer of Gouda cheese until melted and then subsequently covered with a layer of dressed salad greens. The dish is usually served in a disposable metal tray as this food is a fast food. The dish is often served with garlic sauce and sambal, a hot sauce from the former colony of Indonesia. Kapsalon has a high energy content, with each serving containing approximately 7500 kJ[1], but apart from the high-GL fries, low in carbohydrates and hence glycemic load (GL). The term kapsalon means "hairdressing salon" in Dutch, alluding to one of the inventors of the dish. (copy from wiki)

Living in germany you keep pronouncing Doener wrong. It can also be wrapped in a tortilla, and the sauce is an Herb and/or Garlic sauce with "Sharf Sause" or "Hot" sauce, but its really more of a sweet chili sauce. Shish Kabob is not the same thing as Doner Kebab.
@BLY997 жыл бұрын
Both are correct, Kabab is the most correct version however because it was the original word in Arabic, Kabob is Persian and Kebab is the Turkish way of saying it.

Gyro in itself is disrespectfull to Turks. You know, the people whome you were subjects to and copied the cuisine off.

Interesting. In Tokyo there are numerous Döner Kebab shops scattered across the city. The price is usually about JPY 500-600 (around USD 5.00) and they are pretty good. In Thailand the wrap style Kababs usually go for about USD 3.00 and different shops have different sizes. The wrap style Kababs that I've seen in the States come in at about USD 9-10. Many nights after drinking in Thailand, I would grab a Kebab before heading back to the hotel. Those things hit the spot.

Gyros are one of my favourite sandwiches. I wish I could make them at home. I get doner cababs a lot when I’m in the right area. I used to have a restaurant close to me when I was in my teens and early twenties. Sadly the restaurant closed down and didn’t reopen anywhere else. I now have to go to the other side of town to a fast food place called the pita pit when I want a doner or gyro. Now I have to try and find a ride to get myself and my dad a gyro each for lunch.

It is usually shortened to just Doner in Canada. Gyros and Doners are excellent when done right. And no they were not served up at the Donner Party.

Doner kebabs are massive here in Australia haha, usually beef or chicken and sometimes lamb, I always get beef and chicken together with tabouli, onion, lettuce with chilli sauce, garlic sauce and bbq sauce, best after a night out drinking

When this video first showed up in my feed I thought it said "Donner Kebab" which would have been funny but twisted. For anyone who doesn't know who the Donner Party was google it and get a chuckle. Next, I thought about Donner the reindeer but then thought where's Blitzen Kabab, Vixen, etc.. Sorry it's Christmas time 2017 and it flashed in my head. Good video as always.

Doner meat is a staple post Friday/Saturday night drinking session food stuff in the UK. Often served on a bed of chips (chunky fries) and smothered in garlic mayonnaise, yoghurt and mint or chilli sauce. You often find the remnants on the streets Sunday morning, where some poor soul after consuming 15 pints of cheap lager and a kebab has evacuated their stomach contents in a shop doorway. You can get sliced doner meat frozen in the UK, whilst not as authentic as from 'the chippy' it has to be much better than canned.
