I have the salt and pepper shakers and have kind of a love/hate relationship with them. It's very easy to over salt your food because as soon as you tip it over, a bunch of fine salt plops out from the previous time you used it. Because of that, it's actually still a two-handed operation for me, since I dispense it into my hand before sprinkling it on my food. The measuring spoon seems promising, but I kind of wish you'd tried it with a less viscous liquid before calling it water tight.

There's no advantage to grinding your salt fresh. The salt grinder is a gimmick.
@Karadoxical
@Karadoxical Жыл бұрын
@@nevermore0 The advantage is that you can buy Kosher salt with large grains and grind it to the size you need, depending on what you're using it for, without having anti-caking and iodine additives that are in many table salts.

I was wondering this too. In my opinion you cant measure a right amount. With manual turning or ever a button you can stop it in an instant, but here you first need to turn it upright while it keeps dispensing.

A low-high switch would make it more user friendly from table to stove. You don't want to dump a ton of salt or pepper on your food but you don't want to wait forever when prepping the meal.

Pampered chef's been selling them for years also. I've had my set for has to be close to 15 years now. I like those over this because the plunger is actually the cup for liquids. You pour liquids in one way and solids in from the other side (I'm not explaining it well, but go hunt up the aforementioned Good Eats and you should see what I mean.)

Sal n pepper suck because they only adjust from course to chunky. Really there’s no fine setting. Disappointed he didn’t report that. I’ve owned those exact ones and they broke quick and batteries also would get low fast and the grind would start to suffer. I’ve bought some others that I love on Amazon. I’ve had two adjust-a-cups for more than a decade and they still look like new. They’re especially good for measuring things like sour cream or brown sugar because you can use it like a plunger to get the ingredients out. Much easier than a regular measuring cup. I put a little bit of olive oil around the seal after I wash it to keep the rubber conditioned.

Accuracy is important in cooking, and those were large margins for error. Personally both the adjust-a-cup and spoon would be a hard pass from me. Also for the water-tight test, maybe using a thin liquid like vanilla extract or water would be more helpful than a thick syrup?

I find my adjustable measuring cup helpful only for sticky ingredients like honey, peanut butter, corn syrup, etc. A lot easier than trying to scrape the sticky stuff out of a regular cup measurer. But otherwise, I totally agree, to easy to mismeasure an important ingredient.

Adjustable measuring cups have been around forever and IMO, they rock. I just finally had to replace my OXO one, which my mom bought in the 2000s. Naturally the one I just bought isn't as sturdy as my old one, but it seems to work fine so far. They're especially great for measuring thick, hard-to-pour ingredients like honey, molasses, corn syrup, etc.

I have had my stainless battery-operated salt and pepper mills for almost 2 years. I ❤LOVE❤ them and 💯% recommend them to EVERYONE, especially those with arthritis/dexterity issues in their hands. Also, I have been able to let it go on it's own in my salt/pepper box. When it sounds like it needs more product, I give it a shake and it continues. I don't let it go for too long, but it's handy if you need to use your hands for something or if you don't want steam clogging the gears and you want to fill a salt/pepper box faster. I can't say enough praises about these shakers.

Would have been fun and informative to see a battery life test on the salt & pepper shakers. 12 batteries is a lot nowadays! Also the people that said the salt and pepper shakers stopped working after a few months - since the duo requires TWELVE batteries, I bet one of the batteries eventually leaked and corroded the terminals. Something to watch out for long term with anything that uses batteries. (Clean the contacts every so often with isopropyl alcohol)

I bought those same salt and pepper mills. The pepper worked well however, the salt quit after about 8 months. It seems that the salt corroded the metal shaft and it got stuck thus burning out the motor. I tried to get a replacement but, the company didn't respond. So I went back to the manual one that I used for years. Now, on the manual one, I disassemble it after every "tank full" and rinse the salt out and let it air dry for a day. It seems to work great.

I thought about getting the salt & pepper grinder you tested but didn't like the battery aspect or the reviews on it over pouring. I instead went with a set that could be recharged and dispenses with the push of a button. It also has the light function, comes with a nice stand where you can set up the recharging and can be found on Amazon. It was more expensive but as I never have to buy batteries for it or worry about adding too much salt or pepper to my food, it is well worth it.

I never use dry measuring devices but instead, I use a kitchen scale and weigh them, measuring the quantities by weight, not volume. Good luck....I think you're going to need it!

I have a pampered chef adjustable cup. The biggest difference is the plunger is hollow and translucent. You turn it upside down and fill the liquid into the plunger, which does have a spout. You use the measurements on the sleeve as the markings for the liquids. For the solids you flip it over and adjust the plunger to your measurement and fill all the way to the top. This way you can use a knife to level it off for exactness. I’ve had it for 10 yrs and it never leaked. I have the pepper mill but a different brand. I’ve had for a year and haven’t changed the batteries.

The measuring cup and spoon sound clever, but usually when I use one in a recipe, I use multiple cups and spoons. Having to stop mid-recipe to wash my tools sounds frustrating. And I don't think they look accurate enough for baking. The mills would be great for someone with a disability, but I don't see a need for anything that expensive for most people.

That was exactly my thought - I would have to stop & wash that measuring spoon each time, because I don't necessarily want sugar in my salt or dry ingredients stuck to the leftover wet ingredients. Also, I don't see how it saves space - my measuring spoons nest into a stack that's smaller than that device, or I can hang them up. Same with the cup thingy, plus I use different cup sets for dry and wet ingredients so I'd still have to have extras. I'm not sure if the accuracy issue - because there definitely is one - was just him being too quick about it or if there's actually a problem, but I wouldn't trust either device from this video.

I used to have one of those measuring spoons and it’s okay as long as your recipe needs only dry, wet or granulated ingredients. If you need say honey, salt, cinnamon and syrup you have to wash it every time you measure an ingredient but with regular measuring spoons, if you need different quantities, you only wash the whole set at the end.

Almost 20 years ago I went to a Chef's something or other party. (Similar to a Tupperware party.) One of the things I purchased was a measuring cup, very similar to what you showed Except, you can use both ends. One is for liquids and the other for dry. That dry end is great for think gooey stuff like honey, because the one section slides down (Like a plunger). You don't have to turn around the outer piece because the markings for dry are upside-down from the liquid. I use it most everyday. I probably paid less than what that one cost. I also have measuring spoons like those..cheap version from WM. I'm not a fan.

The adjust a cup is designed for messy ingreditents like Mayo, Honey, Pnut Butter, Corn Syrup. Had mine for almost 15 years. Used occasionaly, but mainly for viscous ingredients. Alton Brown mentions it his gadget review book. I think that's where I came across it.

I bought the adjustable measuring cup when I saw it on Alton Brown's Good Eats show. I use mine for thick ingredients like shortening, honey, sour cream, and the like, and I love it. I bought a push-button pepper mill, but these look and seem to work better than mine.

6 batteries is kinda crazy. they better last a really long time in there. i'm from europe so i don't have much use for measuring cups/spoons but maybe one day you can do a kitchen scale test for us 😅

Yeah, an $80 scale that takes up half the kitchen is much better than a little measuring cup that costs $1.

@@Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co having a bad day? not sure why my comment upset you. i never said using a scale is superior to using volumetric measurements or anything like that!? just our recipes always call for weights instead of cups, so we don't have a use for measuring cups and utilize scales instead. different way to achieve the same result. (btw most kitchen scales are around 15€ and about the size of this adjustable cup)

I’ve had my pepper and salt grinders for 4 years already. I drop them from the counter all the time and they are still working just fine. Rechargeable would be my next upgrade. Although the batteries last around a month of heavy use so it’s not a huge deal when using rechargeable batteries

I've had one of those adjustutable measuring cups for years after seeing Alton Brown use one. My issue with it was that it started to tilt off to one side after a while so it was hard to keep it flush.

I've had those adjustable type measuring cups now for 20 years. Usually one side is for dry ingredients and you turn upside down for the wet

The mills are quite impressive, but it seems like hard to control the speed or volume of the salt/pepper. A hand-turned mill is easier to control. And 6 AAA batteries each could get expensive depending on how long they last. I do like the Adjust-a-cup.

I posted above that I've had the mills over a year and only recently changed the batteries. Only con I've found is you need to shake the pepper mill occasionally to settle the corns to get an even dispersal.

Pampered Chef has had that measuring spoon for many many years. Years ago they were also fairly high priced through PC. I have them, but am more of a measure by sight kind of cook, so rarely use it.

You push the plunger from the bottom to empty contents on adjust a cup, thats the point of it, to get all the sticky ingredients out for you, twist the bottom up and voila, thanks James , you are awesome !❤

I wish the adjust-a-cup had its measurements to the roof. I will often level with a knife. Also is the spoon quantites marking engraved or raised. I find the paint will fade over time.

That last item, the single measuring spoon is genius. Anyone who cooks or bakes knows the annoyance of using multiple spoons, and then storing them, which I have magnetic ones so it helps, but this is a great idea! Solves a problem you may not know you needed. A+ 😁

IDK I have had that spoon for a few years and I don't really use it, I normally just grab for my normal metal measuring spoons as I don't like the extra step having to take it apart and clean it (fishing around my sink for the paddle) than letting it dry and reassembling. Also the wide mouth doesn't fit into spice jars so the small measurements are essentially useless so I need the other set of spoons anyways.
@bradasstv

@@Snofuz68 Good points. My wife also said the same thing about spice jars. I'm more of a pourer, so it wouldn't bother me as much, but you do make some good points. Maybe it still needs a bit tweeking... 😁👍

I can see how the adjust a cup would be great for thick things like honey. You can push the bottom up when you're pouring it in and it will scrape the sides of the container and get out easier.
