Lindsey couldn’t be less happy to be forced to go to the dance but she goes out of her way to give Eli a good time. Later on Sam and the other geeks are depressed Maureen left them to hang with the popular kids yet warmly welcome Eli to join them for lunch.

The editing and directing in this scene is so good. At 00:45 when Lindsey looks over the dance floor it perfectly communicates the existential dread/emptiness she's feeling. Then when she looks to Sam and the camera cuts to him, it switches to his perspective from then on; they transitioned from two entirely separate storylines seamlessly. Its subtle things like this that make all the difference

I love so many things about this scene-how the music progresses and fits so well with the storyline here, Kim being intrigued by Lindsey and seeing her for the first time not as competition and maybe jealous but also impressed by her confidence, Rosso being touched by Lindsey & Eli dancing, Nick being off to the side looking so badly like he wants to dance but prob trying to keep up his image of the cool “Freak” so he resists joining in, Sam facing his preconceived notions and fears about dancing, etc! Even though I'm a woman, I can identify with Sam in this scene in every way possible. Just like in this show, I grew up and went to high school in 1980 in suburban Detroit. I had the biggest crush on a boy named Eric. In 9th grade, we had a school dance where they set up this thing where names would be picked out of a hat (one for boys and one for girls) and each couple picked would slow dance together for one song. My best friend rigged it where I would end up dancing with my crush Eric. I was so nervous as we danced. I remember him feeling kind of sweaty. Who ever picked the song to slow dance to picked a bad one because we danced to The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. Just like in this scene, the song starts off slow and then suddenly gets fast. It was so awkward, trying to look cool transforming from slow dance to fast. Everyone eventually gave up and walked off, including me and my crush. I knew, watching this scene that the song Come Sail Away was about to get a faster tempo. Poor Sam. What happened with me and Eric? Not much. I crushed on him all through 9th grade, then by 10th grade my crush faded away and moved onto someone else. His timing was bad when he tried to kiss me at a party the beginning of 10th grade. Too late Eric.
