@wades9327 What? What's the depth here? You made grilled cheese and laughed at tv? It's so basic, I don't get it. I guess not all kids do that. I would come home and read books, draw, write poetry and short DnD/Scandinavian fantasy style stories, play SEGA and NIN64. Played outside all the time. Imaginative. Built fairy houses. I didn't really have a desire for television. I haven't watched tv in 17 years.

No need to apologize, Sgt. Baker. Here's what I wrote on IMDb over a dozen years ago in my review of the show, and it seems to hold up: >>The "Almost Famous" of network TV Author: Twins65 from Lindenhurst, IL 27 November 2002 Yep. Another critically acclaimed, commercial failure. Just like the aforementioned movie, this show was fantastic because it was so believable. Great cast, stories, and period music. And yet, nobody watched it. What a shame. Trounced by the likes of "Dawson's Creek". What is wrong with America's viewing tastes? It probably would have had a short run even if it was successful, as the actors would have most likely physically outgrew their roles within a couple of years. I'm still amazed the cast of "That 70's Show" are still portraying high schoolers, but I doubt it'll last much longer as well. If you can, record some episodes. They are going to still be excellent viewing in 25 years, which is more than I can say for the likes of crap like "Charmed"! Bill Haverchuck Rules!

Haven’t seen this show in years, but today found myself thinking about this scene for some reason, remembering it as one of the most well-executed, touching, and relatable displays of humanity I’ve ever seen in TV or Film. And it's not even because I see myself thaaaaat much in it, but moreso because it just communicates so well. Totally sums up the greatness of the series in one minute. Watching Bill prepare the kraft-single grilled cheese dinner, all alone, but feeling safe and happy watching his favourite show. And what a nice surprise to find this on youtube today, and see everyone in the comments already saying how amazing they also think it is. Whoever wrote this scene (Judd Apatow / Bob Nickman?) should be proud.

To me, this scene is strangely spot-on relatable. And I have been in the same situation that Bill has. I would always feel completely relaxed and peaceful coming home after a long day of school, with stress eating me away, and people, and worries in my way. I had friends, but a lot of people got on my nerves, or brought stress. A lot of my after-school life would consist of making a snack, laying back, and enjoying one of my favorite shows or movies, and escape into a show or movie to just get away from all of the bullshit in my life. I think that Judd Apatow has stated that this scene was inspired by an actual experience that Judd had growing up in real life, and that most of his after-school nights would consist of what Bill is doing here. I have felt the same way that Bill has felt in this scene. This scene is beautiful, sad, and happy all at the same time, all just for a simple scenario that means so much. The music starting off sad, and Bill looking sad, and relating to being lonely and feeling like a loser, and then the music builds more as he starts enjoying himself and laughing, while the lyrics have a lot to do with this situation right here. I love Bill Haverchuck haha.

I once read an article about this scene and why it is touching for so many people. I agreed with the logic because often I have felt like Bill, especially in High School. Bill does not have many friends, he is picked on at school, he is being raised by a single mom, and a lot and he often feels left out of things. It's a simple lunch that he has made for himself (A brownie, milk, and a grilled cheese), he is spending some time by himself, he is watching his favorite comedian, and he is laughing. He is identifying with his favorite comedian spending time with his "friend" with the way he mirrors Garry with the way he drinks his milk. Bill is escaping it all and melting his troubles away for meal. Yes, it is bittersweet especially with what happens next, his life changing again.

This song makes me feel like crying because he's so happy just being himself and he honestly doesn't care what other people think and doesn't care if he's a geek or not - he just wants to enjoy himself. It makes me cry because he's being so true to himself that it breaks my heart because it comes so easily to a person most people (at school) mock. Because he just doesn't give a shit. Bill Haverchuck's the fucking man. No, he's the fucking Bionic Woman.

This is such a beautiful and simple scene. I tear up when I watch this because it's the first time we see him relaxed, content, and completely himself. Even when he's with his closest friends, he's the weird one. He also doesn't pretend to understand something just because other people "get it" whether it's a joke or a social norm that he doesn't agree with. Although he's happy in this scene, you sense there's been times of loneliness cause he's literally, alone and you can feel it.

Everyone talking about how sad this scene is. I think it's beautiful and uplifting. It's a demonstration of how art is the great escape. In Bill's case it's TV comedy, but it could just have easily been music or film or anything else. It goes to show just how powerful art really is. Bill probably grew up to be an extremely successful person because of his intelligence and curiosity. These are the moments that he will look back on and appreciate later in life. While he is out making a difference in the world. While the people who gave him a hard time are living meaningless lives. He is not the one to feel sorry for at all.

Indeed, this show was great and way ahead of its time. I watched it on Netflix a few years ago, and was so sad and pissed that it never got a sequel. Or even a movie, years later, for a sort of closure to the fans... It just ended so quickly. But yes, I also remember watching this scene and being moved by it. As a bullied kid, I relate. I would also come back home from school to an empty house. Both of my parents had to work. I would have the house all for myself to do any weird shit I wanted without anyone finding out, watching movies or shows I wasn't allowed to. I used to do shit like this, too. Like there was food around but picked the junkiest of the lot. One time I ate a whole ice cream bucket all by myself and I threw up all over our back yard. So, yeah. Felt so relatable to this scene, because you knew it was the best part of your day when you were a weird kid growing up. Bill was one of my favorite characters on this show. I was so afraid that something would or was gonna happen to him after this scene. He was such a nice kid after all. Glad it never went that dark road.
