Personally, when this trope happens, I prefer it where the voice actors do impressions of each other rather just their voices coming from the different body. It makes it more fun.

This trope is usually pretty fun. This isn’t a cartoon, but the X-Files had two uses of this trope in the episodes “Small Potatoes” and “Dreamland” which were both pretty different yet still pretty good. This is a weird example, but another show that did both the Freaky Friday trope and the It’s a Wonderful Life trope was the Donkey Kong TV show from the 90s in “The Big-Switch-A-Roo” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” respectively. Another trope I like is when shows do minimal dialogue episodes. Cartoon examples include “Ugh” from SpongeBob, “Fish Out of Water” from Bojack Horseman, and “Silents, Please” from CatDog. Live-Action examples “Rm9sbG93ZXJz” from X-Files, “Hush” from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and “The Boy from 6B” from Only Murders in the Building. Another trope I see A LOT in cartoons is the “innocent swearing trope” where they bleep out swear words or have an innocent substitute to show that swearing is inappropriate. Examples include “Sailor Mouth” from SpongeBob, “The Word of the Day” from Rugrats, “Curses” from PowerPuff Girls, “Bleep” from Arthur, and many more.

I remember seeing that there's a story in the Danny Phantom comic where Vlad and Danny switch bodies. I was only able to find a couple of panels, but it looks pretty interesting. Heroes and Villains switching bodies is always an interesting way to do it. The episode of Steven Universe that uses this trope is kinda interesting in that Steven ends up in Lars' body while Steven's body is kinda just asleep and Lars is not in Steven's body. I honestly didn't really like it, but it was a different idea to have only one person switch bodies and the other just being asleep the whole time or in a stasis. It also happened in the Justice League cartoon with Lex Luthor and The Flash. I don't remember it being all that interesting except that Lex uses the opportunity to learn The Flash's secret identity and it doesn't work because he has no idea who he is. I think the Fantastic Four cartoon also did it except they switched powers instead of bodies. One of the movies did it too for a couple of scenes.

Man, that first one that dealt with bullying and your commentary on it took me right back to hear school. My mum pulled me out of two different schools because bullying got so bad, and staff actually dealing with it were... inadequate, to say the least. I was home schooled for a year before finding my place in alternative schools for middle and high school, and from there, socialising in college was a breeze once I found the resident gamers, nerds, and geeks. But particularly, the notion of school staff just accepting that a kid is going to be singled out and severely bullied is what got to me. When I was in elementary, most of the kids picked on me until it escelated to fights, in which I've dealt with some serious trauma already at that point, and would go all-out fight in my fight or flight responses since trying to escape had proven moot. When I'd finally retaliate, the school staff would discipline me, but no one else. I remember being pelted with rocks and fir cones, huddling in the fetal position, and staring at the recess lady from between my elbows as I clutched my head to protect it from the onslaught. She was watching, but did nothing... until I retaliated against my tormentors. She IMMEDIATELY began blowing her whistle and screaming at ME that it's inappropriate to hit, kick, scratch, and bite the other kids. There were several of them all attacking me, but not a word of punishment against any of them. When she asked why I did what I did, and I told her that I saw her watching the whole thing and felt like I was going to die, she told me that there's NEVER a good reason to hurt another person, and that I couldn've resolved the situation in my own without her help because, "You're going to be too old to have someone else solve all your problems for you soon, so you need to figure it out on your own." Recess staff frequently told me to stop tattling and solve my own problems whenever I tried to report to them the unadulterated abuse these kids put me through. I was also told that I had anger management issues and forced to see a school psychologist my entire school career. Luckily, they were all very nice, but that was still an erroneous reason for seeing them. Later on, I recall sitting with my mum while she addressed the staff that it just plain wasn't okay that I was constantly being relegated to study hall and rarely allowed outside for recess, and when I was allowed to go to recess, I came home with cuts, scratches, and bruises all over my body. This was the day I found out what it was all about. The staff told my mum (again, with me sitting right next to her), that I was given extra homework that they knew would be too much for me to finish up just so they could relegate me to study hall because, "Removing one child from a situation is easier than managing an entire group of children." They admitted that they waited for me to retaliate because they could then have an excuse to remove me from the situation, but not gave to deal with all the other kids. They admitted that their constant gas lighting of me was just to make me easier to deal with, or particularly, the bullying involving me. They admitted that they didn't think I actually had an anger management problem. It all came down to the fact that I was one, and the bullies were many. And they didn't want to deal with many. Now, I didn't have the issue of being constantly singled out for petty pranks like getting locked in a locker, or stuff like that, because if I could catch whoever was tormenting me, I would absolutely beat the crap out of them. If anyone tried to restrain me, I would squirm, bite, kick, and flail like a wild animal out for blood. I at LEAST had that going for me... but such behaviour was only born because I was relentlessly tormented so badly, so often, with no help that, well... I had to. I certainly didn't WANT to. And to this day, I live a loner life with severe trust issues, and fill up my social needs by rescuing and rehabilitating roosters in the middle of a forest, constantly seeking to find ways to move myself deeper and deeper into the wilderness and cut off any need to venture into civilisation.

I feel like the reason they did the body swap the way they did it in the power puff girls episode was just because the fight they have at the end wouldn't have been as smooth if they did it the normal way, they'd have been in a totally different spot every time they swapped bodies instead of just swapping and getting back to the fight

re: the low stakes of how to undo the body-swap in the Powerpuff Girls episode; I think it could have been interesting sort of inversion. The swap itself isn't the problem; there's something else urgent that needs to be taken care of while you're in someone else's body. Of course, the girls seem to have all their powers even in someone else's body so they don't really use that concept to its fullest extent, and it's 'just' a bank robbery. But I could certainly see a setting where body-swapping isn't a big deal to fix but happens at an inconvenient time making an interesting episode of *something*.

Really, I always had a question about this Danny Phantom episode - it seems that all the kids in Poindexter “little world” know about halfas, that means they are also ghosts, then… does it mean that they are not just there for Poindexter’s imagination and trauma, but… they are all really dead? Like dead-dead? Because I always thought that Poindexter was bullied to actual death, that’s why he is ghost and a teen like he was in school. But that also means that every other kid in his “little world” school is also dead-dead. Like what happened? Had the school got blown up or something that ALL of the kids there died? It’s just… even if such an idea just comes to mind this is dark

I do think a series going over episodes of cartoons that as you mentioned with It's A Wonderful Life, how the shows will in a way almost up to 1:1 copy a previous film or series. And then possibly ranking them on how they did. Most accurate, most understood the message, most creative use of the property, even most outrageous. I think back to It's a Wishful Life episode of Fairly Odd Parents and it was like they knew that what they were doing was the opposite of what was originally done, where instead of showing how much worse everyone's lives are without Timmy in them it is instead showing how much better people are, at least on the surface. It could be a pretty messed up thing to show a ten year old, that yes, you do make people's lives worse and it would be better if you weren't born. It would be interesting to see how different series with their characters approached the topic and if the show had characters act completely different just to fit into the story of another product.

Man it feels great focusing on various tropes in animation. Next time, you should focus on other ones such as the dystopian future, fear of clowns, escaping from prison or something that feels like it, sports episodes, enemies having to team up for once, traveling through history, and that's just all I can think of for now. P.S. If you ever want to rank something (like you did with the inventions of two separate characters or episodes of a show), I suggest ranking the soundtrack to Catdog. Since it was a major highlight in the show, and because no one else has done it, I think it's a great thing to talk about on your channel.

Fun fact the number 724 when digitally added equals 13. I hated this episode due to how Poindexter's understanding and treatment of Danny's action felt off. He didn't even try to let Danny speak though that could've been due to past trauma from bullying. Despite his name and appearance, i would think he would recognize a bully especially since he gave out retribution to others through out the school. There is a lesson about how Danny has been abusing his power to the point where he became a bully himself. I would find a more interesting episode would have Danny and Poindexter working together to the point where Danny realizes that he might be taking things too far.

I believe the reason Sidney Poindexter’s behavior seems nonsensical is because while we’re meant to disagree with Danny’s behavior morally, Sidney is meant to be in the complete _wrong_ on every level: being a terrible judge of character that utterly misjudged the entire situation between Danny and Dash from the very start. In fact it’s Samantha who’s meant to be in the most in the right morally despite both her moralistic preaching and the fact she opportunistically took advantage of Poindexter’s gullibility which no one even acknowledged. I don’t say this to rag on Sam, just to highlight just how screwed up the entire situation is.

You pointed out the address as 69 whatever street and Cartoon Network was channel 69 for me. Not that the number meant anything to me other than the channel number for a long time.

Splitting Images fits the criteria for Animated Atrocities. 1. Sam chews Danny out every time he gets revenge, but doesn't do a thing when he's bullied. 2. Poindexter doesn't even listen to reason and sides with Dash. 3. He planned on leaving Danny stranded in his dimension. I often skip this episode when I watch the home release.

So an interesting episode of the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy you could cover is the wong that spoofs Harry Potter, i suggest it due to the fact that it also parodies Animal House

38:59 the girls as Ms Bellum the Professor and the Mayor especially dressed as Blossom Bubbles and Buttercup is hilarious. I was gut laughing with my dog and cat staring at me.

The mustard joke in the jimmy neutron episode always makes me laugh. It’s always the small offhand comments that kill me in that show

Damn, that was a whole lotta nostalgia. Didn't Deedee & Dexter swap? Or maybe it was Dexter & Mandark. This trope was used pretty heavily in South Korean webcomics in the 2010s.

I would definitely consider how it is that Poindexter is in an entire school full of dead kids. How is that?

43:18 This may or may not be where this inspiration came from but there's a song from Kid Rock's 1990 debut album titled "Yo-Da-Lin in the Valley" (which was its only single) that's pretty raunchy so having that paired with the 69 on here seems quite fitting lmao

I don't know the name of the Powerpuff girl episode that was being shown at the beginning part of the episode, but it's pretty easy to tell that bubbles somehow develops cataracts. By the way, have some of that works. I take personal events to that but just to clarify, I'm referring to the people who made the original Powerpuff girls episode after all. I have cataracts can be very bad after all. Some people have gone blind from it but it isn't as bad as is kind of shown with bubbles. Plus you need to go through eye surgeries before you can get glasses. I know that from having cataracts my whole damn life or at least the wide majority of it (started showing signs at a few months. Around 12 I think I can't remember off the top of my head)

Body swaps are always a fun time. Love seeing the antics of the characters as they navigate each other's bodies. A feel a similar trope to cover would be the gender bender trope. I feel like it combines "body swap" with the boys vs girls mentality of the early 2000s in a fun way, as well as being a nice commentary on gender stereotypes and what it means to be a boy or a girl. Also those kind of stories when done well can mean a lot to transgender folks like myself.

Have anyone figured that he probably been bullied to death idk I was thinking that as a kid it would been a twist if that did happen
@David-nq8cv7 ай бұрын
That's most likely what happened because the ghost school is stuck in "class of 55" so Poindexter is reliving his final year as his own afterlife being bullied all the time

Yeah I remember watching an anime as well ask a live action show with this concept. The smartest girl at this Japanese academy swaps places with the delinquent boy. It also involves witches.

I'm a fan of the Freaky Friday genre, although one thing that always bothers me is that they always swap the characters' voices, but it's always an interesting trope.

I hated this trope as a kid. It actively gave me nightmares. I would legit stop watching whole shows if one episode aired following this trope. I can’t truly place why. Great video though.

22:49 my thought wasn't about how that statement didn't make sense. My thought was how didn't Sam jump to correct "Danny" about how much of a bully the jock character was, proving the real Danny innocent

The teen titans comic also did this trope (not the regular DC Comics, a comic based on the Cartoon Network show) where all five titans swapped bodies as well as their powers, and because of a spell mishap by Raven, they all swap bodies and powers a second time

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it disturbing that the afterlife for Poindexter was being stuck in school for all eternity. Did he commit s*icide, and he's stuck in the Ghost Zone as a form of Hell or Purgatory?
