Welcome to my rose garden! Today I'm going to share the David Austin roses I have blooming right now. Most of these roses are second-year bare root shrubs, but there's also some special roses that have been growing since the very beginning! I'm located in Southern California zone 10b, in Orange County California. Check out more rose growing information on my blog:

Have fun! The best thing about roses is that they come back every year. It's such a rewarding plant to grow.

Hello, from Northern CA. Awesome to see your Benjamin Britten because I have one too. I don't see many people grow them. It was my first DA rose because I love red roses. I want to get a yellow DA, but can't decide between Golden Celebration or Graham Thomas.

Yes! I rarely see Benjamin Britten. It's a very cool rose, but the thorns still surprise me! haha. That's a tough choice between graham thomas and golden celebration. They are both amazing yellow roses. Let me know if you have any specific questions about either rose to help you make your decision.

Thank you so much for this update! When choosing plants for my parents’ front yard at their bungalow in Santa Ana, I knew I wanted the At Last rose for a front “hedge”, but I really also wanted at least one David Austin rose. I looked, but couldn’t find a lot of recent information on KZbin or otherwise online about what was really suited to our area, but I remember looking at what you had put out about your rose garden. Your Front Door Lady of Shallott (which I love in name and color, but it was too similar to At Last’s color to copy your choice) really confirmed to me what to do! I chose to do a climber, to replace a potato vine that had come with the house (wrapping around the Northwest corner of the front porch, lots of heat and sun in summer afternoons and evenings) but had finally worn out its last life after we permanently stopped watering the lawn. I almost chose a climbers/ramblers with the small blooms in yellow or pale pink, but at the last second on the website I switched and ordered a bare root Wollerton Old Hall. It’s been looking good since it went into the ground, but I was especially happy when about a month or two after it was planted, I showed our landscaper (who is a neighbor and really fun guy to talk plants and gardening in California with, locals should def hire him because I’m getting him more into native plants too), and he was excited to learn which variety it was. One of this best clients have an Eichler house in Orange that he’s overhauled the yards of, and he said they have like 6 of the same rose I chose, only 2 season in now, and they are thriving and incredible. He said the scent is as amazing as they say online. I was so thrilled, because I hadn’t found it on a ton of lists/examples for California, and they didn’t even stock it this year at Roger’s Gardens (apparently they had their own really old one growing there for quite some time, though it’s gone now). Climates in Santa Ana and Orange differ very slightly, but I have super high hopes for this rose and am already imagining where else we could put more David Austins (maybe the east-facing wall in the side yard needs a ton of climbers!) It’s amazing to see how yours are doing; it’s been a great year for roses, weather-wise, I think! This Santa Ana house is meant to be part income property, part family hub, so even though I’m aiming for a garden that stays fairly low-maintenance, I want to also have a lot of flowers we can cut- I’m aiming for something we can let it get a little wild like an English cottage garden, mixing tons of California natives with non-invasive non-natives. This approach is perfect for the architecture style too, because it’s a cottagey-Craftsman California Bungalow, slightly later (1919) than the ultimate bungalow heyday. It was exciting to me to hear you talking about flower growing when you guested on the Epic Gardening podcast around the time my family purchased it, because you are so close to me and the amount of Gardening content to casually absorb coming from Southern California specifically was pretty limited. So I always want to see what you are up to when I am looking for ideas or recommendations! Keep it up!

Thanks for watching and commenting! The plans you have for the house sound perfect. Growing California natives has also been very rewarding for me as well, and the increase in wildlife that visits is so fun to watch. As for the Wollerton Old Hall, that's great to hear! This year I ordered several more roses, but they came super late so no blooms to show this tour. One of them is a Wollerton, and I can already see it's pretty vigorous. Another is Claire Austin (you should check out that one)---it's a really pretty creamy white color. Love hearing your garden plans!

FRIIIIIEEENND! Your roses are so stunning. Your Graham Thomas is incredible. I just planted two in containers to train in front of my office and holy moly is yours so inspiring. My Eden is in its 4th year and i can’t wait for it to get as vigorous as yours. Also your Lady of Shallot is to die for. I may have to see if i can find a place for one somewhere. I can never have tok many climbing roses!

I’m nervous because I’m about to order from David Austin‘s website and I’ve been watching a lot of YT videos trying to do my research to pick which ones I want, and I keep hearing about people ordering a specific Rose, getting it, planting it, and then when the first bloom hits come to find out, it’s not the correct Rose they ordered

Aw, I know it can be difficult. Unfortunately, mistakes do happen. But, I can say that out of all the roses I've ever ordered this has only happened one time and the customer service was more than willing to replace the rose. Hope that helps!

So lovely roses in your garden! I have just became obsessed with DA roses but it’s hard to get in Canada as most nurseries don’t care them.

@@FreckledCalifornian DA online don’t do delivery to Canada. I wish they do. I usually drive 1-3 hours looking for few nurseries that do carry them. There are bare roots some nurseries online carry but they sold out quickly last spring.

Does your eden climber like shade or do you find it needs more sun?
@FreckledCalifornian
@FreckledCalifornian 11 ай бұрын
Hello! I find that it blooms best in more sun, but this has tolerated some partial shade just fine. It's kind of crammed in a corner of my garden amongst a lemon tree and some artichokes.

What type of artemisia is that in your garden? I'm looking for a silver foliage plant that grows to that height.
@FreckledCalifornian
@FreckledCalifornian 3 ай бұрын
It is 'powis castle' artemisia. Mine personally started to feel too large for the space, so I actually just pulled it this month! If I had more space here, I would have kept it because it's pretty!

What are you doing with feeding and watering? I live in CA and sometimes it feels like they hate the full sun heat
@FreckledCalifornian
@FreckledCalifornian 9 ай бұрын
I understand what you mean. I find that my older roses don't flinch in the heat, but I'm more careful with my younger ones. These are all watered 2-3 times a week, depending on the weather. They are in-ground and surrounded by low-growing plants, so I find that water retention is actually very good. The lower plants keep the ground cooler too. In terms of fertilizing, I do Rose Tone after doing a deadhead/prune and repeat throughout the growing season. I have a video and blog article on my deadheading/pruning regimen if that would help!
