"Isn't This a Lovely Day?" is a popular song written by Irving Berlin for the 1935 film Top Hat, where it was introduced by Fred Astaire in the scene where his and Ginger Rogers' characters are caught in a gazebo during a rainstorm. The lyric is an example of a song which turns a bad situation into a love song, a common style for Irving Berlin, as in I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm and Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee.
His 1935 version was assessed as reaching the No. 3 spot in the charts of the day

You never get done watching them. It was a great touch to have her in jodhpurs and a hacking jacket. Those little amused glances he gives her as they dance and that wry smile of hers ... To think my mother as a child saw Fred and his sister dance in the Glasgow Empire.

This amazing scene just has a playful nature. The glances while dancing, the pauses of the music, the lyrics, the choreography... even playing with the different floor levels, it's just a beautifully done scene between two artists with great chemistry. I'll always cherish my memories of watching astaire and rogers on screen for the first time.

My wife and I didn’t actually meet until 1981, but she recalls hearing some idiot calling out a protest because at the Radio City Art Deco Exposition of 1974 they screened a print that cut out this song’s verse (‘The weather is fright’ning’) and jumped straight to the chorus. That idiot was me but, somehow, we’ve sung and danced happily through the last 43 years. Thanks for sharing the whole glorious number 🎶!

There is more truth in fairy stories than most 'realistic' yarns. When people try to invent an ideal world, they cannot help obliquely revealing the difficulties and drawbacks from which they flee into fantasy. The RKO musicals rigorously exclude the Depression and gathering war clouds of the Thirties. That may have exasperated the politically minded critics of those times, but it only adds poignancy to the brilliant art of these films, now we can see the historical backdrop whole. Their quest for excellence and the exaltation of spirit they generated in audiences trapped between slump and world war is not 'escapist'. It reaffirms things that abide: beauty, love, the resolution of misunderstanding and reconciliation. Fairy stories must end happily or they are no use. Likewise Jane Austen ignored the ructions of her era- industrial revolution and Napoleon- to fasten on the same story arc as Astaire and Rogers. All her novels are about young men and women finding one another. We do not reject them because there are no Luddites, guillotines or demands to broaden the franchise in them.

Thank you for such a wonderful post - this happens to be one of my favourite Astaire- Rogers dance routines! Just two thoughts, firstly, for Fred Astaire's wonderful singing voice (which I always loved - even as Mr. Astaire, himself (!) frequently discounted his own singing abilities). The other thing I love here, is the unusual sight of Miss Rogers' legs on display, she normally wore longish dresses, which mostly made everything from waist down (other than her feet) fully visible. Miss Rogers shown here in pants ("jodhpurs") fully show-cased how she could match Fred step-for-step. That old quote, "backwards and in high-heels," was certainly true! Cheers to all!

awesome song. Thank you for sharing. in case anyone miss the lyrics: The weather is frightening The thunder and lightning Seem to be having their way But as far as I'm concerned It's a lovely day The turn in the weather Will keep us together So I can honestly say That as far as I'm concerned It's a lovely day and everything's okay Isn't this a lovely day to be caught in the rain? You were going on your way Now you've got to remain Just as you were going Leaving me all at sea The clouds broke, they broke And oh what a break for me I can see the sun up high Though we're caught in a storm I can see where you and I could be cozy and warm Let the rain pitter-patter But it really doesn't matter If the skies are gray Long as I can be with you It's a lovely day

This movie for me was able to better as an example of Ginger’s talent. There was no beautiful flowing gown. As a massive fan of Elenor Powell , Broadway Melody of 1940 dancing with Fred Astaire showed that she was able to match him step for step in ability. My love for musical movies forces me to my addiction for my daily fix. And Ginger is often among my favorite top choices.

@@julianmarsh1378 I've never trusted Rotten Tomatoes- always used IMDb myself. I'd probably fall into the bracket of "younger film critics", but I tend to accentuate the positives of "flawed"- in today's eyes- movies rather than just write them off because of ONE "dated" scene. I don't care if a film had blackface, or misogyny, or slight racism- I understand that those things are not acceptable anymore, but that doesn't mean the films aren't good. Film history started with the invention of the moving picture back in the 1870s...lol
