I think, of all the greats of his day, vocally (Bing, Gene, Frank, Fred etc) ..and dancing for that matter... Donald O'Connor has the most super effortless voice and style of all of them. I've been a vocal pro all my life and these entertainers are from my parents' generation (I'm just 60).. but the fludity with which he carries a tune and the light, never over-stated crooned notes, and the absolute PERFECT pitch LONG before there were tools to help with pitch is just EXTRAORDINARY. Don't get me wrong.. Bing (Crosby), Gene (Kelly) , Frank (Sinatra), Fred (Astaire) are the tippy top of the top... but Donald O'Connor is SO under-rated and under-heralded and he can hang with the best of the best. Wonderful!

Both these stars had the bad luck to come to the fore just as musicals were running out of steam generically and veering towards pretension in the hands of Kelly, Agnes De Mille, Sondheim, Bernstein et al. The family audience was splintering, with moms, pops and young kids staying home to gawp at TV while the teens necked in drive-ins to Elvis. Musicals were so expensive if done on this scale that they could not recoup. It was long before films got multiple subsequent earning opportunities on TV, video, cable, disks, streaming etc. In 1953 it was big bang at the box office on first general release or nothing. 'Call Me Madam' grossed well, and Merman and O'Connor reunited next year in 'There's No Business Like Show Business'.

He asked me if I could probably follow a few steps if I did them and I told him I think I can and he showed me a few steps and then we did the dance together. Afterwards I was given an autographed picture of him. At the time I didn't think it was any big deal I was only 12 and didn't know what a big star he was all I knew is my mom had taken me to another one of the fundraisers she was always going to with all these ladies. It really would be great to have someone that charming. I was so lucky to be able to meet him. I was the only child there and my mom told him I tap danced and they had me go up to where he was I didn't want to at first but my mom told me to do it. We were introduced to him and he said. So you can tap dance do you think you can do this and he did a few steps. I told him yes and so we danced together and afterwards I was given an autographed picture of him. I didn't realize what a big thing that was till years later because I really didn't know who he was and a movie star. So when I tell people that I got to dance with Donald O'Connor most people would say who is he they never heard of him. That's as bad as them saying they don't know who Charlton Heston or Victor borga is both of whom I've met. My mom had taken us to go see Victor borga and she took me and my brothers backstage and she had him autograph our programs. I got to meet Charlton Heston and his wife when they performed in a play here at the theater in town. I got his autograph and pictures of of me with the two of them. I regret I didn't ask him what was his favorite movie he ever stared in. The men now were not raise like men used to be with manners and well groomed you'd be surprised how good-looking some of these men would be if they do something with their hair and dressed properly. the majority of them really need to learn respect and manners. I hate to say this but the women's liberation movement has affected the way men treat women. I've had guys tell me they've been yelled at for trying to open a door for a woman. I can't understand why some woman think they think they are being treated as if their helpless if a man opens a door for her. My brother's wife will stand next to the car door or sits in the car untill my brother opens the door for her. My mother did raise my brothers to open doors and help with a chair something esle men don't do. The other lost show of respect was how a man would stand and remove their hat if a woman walked in a room or were being introduced to. I never think that will ever come back they wont even take off their hat when they eat much less come in the house. Well they don't wear proper hats they wear ball caps. Ok I'll end my rant.

Lots of great singers have sung this song. However, I love Donald’s rather “casual” approach to the music. He blends from conversation to the music in such a pleasant way. Donald could certainly belt out a song - so it’s nice to heahow he interprets these lyrics…. Also, at the very end, there’s a nice touch - a saleslady behind a counter is watching Donald and is amused as his makes his exit. This entire clip is pure MGM Gold. …Rowby.

I know that I am an " Old Fool" but I have watched this film clip AT LEAST once a day for the past three months....It makes this 89 year old very happy, and THAT is better than all the medication that the doctors prescribe for me.

I got to see him live on stage as Captain Andy in "Show Boat" in the early 1980's, what a great performance.

Donald O'Connor is very underrated, but he is up there with Gene Kelly!

He had such a fine singing voice-so much better than Gene Kelly's, wonderful dancer as he was...

Absolutely correct! His voice was amazing and he could certainly hold his own in the dancing department next to Gene Kelly. I've watched this clip so often and love it more each time! How sad that we don't have these movies and performers anymore, not to mention the fabulous songs of Irving Berlin.

lovesmusic36 We actually do have the talents-if anything even more athletic than Kelly. What we do not have are the hoofer tradition O'Conner grew up in with, as you say, that kind of melodic music-even a Broadway show these days is lucky to produce just one good melody. But they have different qualities that contemporary audiences can love-and we always have these unique shows and old videos to enjoy forever...

bloodgrss I suppose that's true although at my age, it's difficult for me to drag myself out of the past. I think if Donald O'C sang this song to me, someone would either have to pick me up from the floor or scrape me off the ceiling! As for athletic dance, Donald's "Make 'Em Laugh" from "Singin in the Rain" definitely ranks up there.

This scene truly marks the exact time that the princess and Mr. Gibson had eyes for each other. It's also telling when he says the song is very "danceable". They later dance one of the most beautiful numbers to that very song. I wish he didn't get that disease from the mule. He was first choice for White Christmas. He would have been working with the lovely Vera Ellen again, and Bing Crosby. And he looked exceptionally handsome in those glasses.

@@shelleywantiez7964 That would be wonderful! My mom always s liked Mr. O, but I never understood why until shortly before her death on Christmas Day. We watched Call Me Madam together, and I promptly fell in love with him. Now I seem to be obsessed with his early work. I confess that it broke my heart to discover what he went through with his first wife and his struggle with alcohol. My dad was born two years before "The O'Connor." Neither of these amazing men had any idea when they started smoking of the harm that would come to them from it. There are so many if-onlys. 💔
