Vera-Ellen (as Princess Maria) meets Donald O'Connor (as Kenneth) for the first time and develops an attraction to him in the scene "It's A Lovely Day Today" from the 1953 20th Century Fox movie "Call Me Madam". ( Note: This video came from a DVD I bought - I do not own the copyright !!! )

I think, of all the greats of his day, vocally (Bing, Gene, Frank, Fred etc) ..and dancing for that matter... Donald O'Connor has the most super effortless voice and style of all of them. I've been a vocal pro all my life and these entertainers are from my parents' generation (I'm just 60).. but the fludity with which he carries a tune and the light, never over-stated crooned notes, and the absolute PERFECT pitch LONG before there were tools to help with pitch is just EXTRAORDINARY. Don't get me wrong.. Bing (Crosby), Gene (Kelly) , Frank (Sinatra), Fred (Astaire) are the tippy top of the top... but Donald O'Connor is SO under-rated and under-heralded and he can hang with the best of the best. Wonderful!

It really would be great to have someone that charming. I was so lucky to be able to meet him. My mother took me to a fundraiser and they had him there to boost the donations from a whole room of women. I was the only child there and my mom told him I tap danced and they had me go up to where he was I didn't want to at first but my mom told me to do it. We were introduced to him and he said. So you can tap dance do you think you can do this and he did a few steps. I told him yes and so we danced together and afterwards I was given an autographed picture of him. I didn't realize what a big thing that was till years later because I really didn't know who he was and a movie star. So when I tell people that I got to dance with Donald O'Connor most people would say who is he they never heard of him. That's as bad as them saying they don't know who Charlton Heston or Victor borga is both of whom I've met. My mom had taken us to go see Victor borga and she took me and my brothers backstage and she had him autograph our programs. I got to meet Charlton Heston and his wife when they performed in a play here at the theater in town. I got his autograph and pictures of of me with the two of them. I regret I didn't ask him what was his favorite movie he ever stared in. The men now were not raise like men used to be with manners and well groomed you'd be surprised how good-looking some of these men would be if they do something with their hair and dressed properly. the majority of them really need to learn respect and manners. I hate to say this but the women's liberation movement has affected the way men treat women. I've had guys tell me they've been yelled at for trying to open a door for a woman. I can't understand why some woman think they think they are being treated as if their helpless if a man opens a door for her. My brother's wife will stand next to the car door or sits in the car untill my brother opens the door for her. My mother did raise my brothers to open doors and help with a chair something esle men don't do. The other lost show of respect was how a man would stand and remove their hat if a woman walked in a room or were being introduced to. I never think that will ever come back they wont even take off their hat when they eat much less come in the house. Well they don't wear proper hats they wear ball caps. Ok I'll end my rant.

Donald O'Connor is much underrated. Watch his dance numbers with Gene Kelly in "Singin' in the Rain". and his solo number "A Man chases a Girl" in "There's no business like show business". lovesmusic36 We actually do have the talents-if anything even more athletic than Kelly. What we do not have are the hoofer tradition O'Conner grew up in with, as you say, that kind of melodic music-even a Broadway show these days is lucky to produce just one good melody. But they have different qualities that contemporary audiences can love-and we always have these unique shows and old videos to enjoy forever...

Both these stars had the bad luck to come to the fore just as musicals were running out of steam generically and veering towards pretension in the hands of Kelly, Agnes De Mille, Sondheim, Bernstein et al. The family audience was splintering, with moms, pops and young kids staying home to gawp at TV while the teens necked in drive-ins to Elvis. Musicals were so expensive if done on this scale that they could not recoup. It was long before films got multiple subsequent earning opportunities on TV, video, cable, disks, streaming etc. In 1953 it was big bang at the box office on first general release or nothing. 'Call Me Madam' grossed well, and Merman and O'Connor reunited next year in 'There's No Business Like Show Business'.

I've love Donald O'Connor for decades. His dancing, his charm, his boyish good looks and his singing. BUT I've never before fully appreciated the truly beautiful quality of his voice . He simply has it all!!!!!! God bless his dear Soul.

Donald O'Connor was an outstanding talent in his day. The only thing wrong was that he was "overshadowed" by Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Ray Bolger and later on by Frank and Sammy. Donald could do everything and had personality dripping from his ears. I wish we had more like him; sadly to say, stars like him are a thing of the past; however we have KZbin to bring back these days of yore.

there's a video clip on youtube with another scene from the movie - Donald with Ethel Merman singing "You're Just in Love" - just search for it there's a tendency to underrate cutie Vera Ellen - who here demonstrates an effortless charm and skill - aided by her obvious chemistry with Donald O'Connor - one of the movie's best dancers - her singing had to be dubbed however

Notice 4:09. They just met, but he assumes she can read music. Musical literacy is something you find often among the "stars" in these old movies... and something rare today.
@terrywright7470
@terrywright7470 2 ай бұрын
It is not only musical literacy that is missing today, have you seen some of their writing and spelling? and don`t even mention their grammar. If you ask some of them a question about grammar they think you are asking about their Granddads wife!!!!

This scene truly marks the exact time that the princess and Mr. Gibson had eyes for each other. It's also telling when he says the song is very "danceable". They later dance one of the most beautiful numbers to that very song. I wish he didn't get that disease from the mule. He was first choice for White Christmas. He would have been working with the lovely Vera Ellen again, and Bing Crosby. And he looked exceptionally handsome in those glasses.

@@shelleywantiez7964 That would be wonderful! My mom always s liked Mr. O, but I never understood why until shortly before her death on Christmas Day. We watched Call Me Madam together, and I promptly fell in love with him. Now I seem to be obsessed with his early work. I confess that it broke my heart to discover what he went through with his first wife and his struggle with alcohol. My dad was born two years before "The O'Connor." Neither of these amazing men had any idea when they started smoking of the harm that would come to them from it. There are so many if-onlys. 💔
