I'm a low-handicap golfer. Played scratch in my late 20s, early 30s. I liked to think of myself as a decent ball striker. Then I followed Fred all day at the Fed-X St Jude a few years ago, and with every swing my spirit dropped more and more! LOL. After 5-6 holes I realized I was so far below his level that I wanted to give up the game. The swing is so smooth it looks like he's swinging in mollases. Yet the ball absolutely explodes off the face of the club and the flight is something to behold. It started low, then climbed to an apex, and then dropped gently to the right in the most gorgeous fade imaginable. Truly a genius ball striker.
@BuffaloNickel92 жыл бұрын
Similarly, I'm a 1hdcp(+/- .5) at age 36. Roughly a shot better than when I was a teen. I'm often told I should play more, which I can't argue the merits of, but I never seem to make it a priority. This year has seen more rounds than normal. Some years I only play 2-3 times. My home state's amateur (in southeast us) is normally one i play every year. Short game seems to never leave me, even when other parts do. On topic- of several tournaments I followed Freddy, the most memorable would be TPC Sawgrass 10-12 years ago. He's my dad's favorite player as my father was able to pick him out in the distance just by what he was wearing. The effortless rhythm of his swing and that smooth Loop in his shoulders at transition is mesmerizing to watch. Knowing Freddy, he couldn't care less and is rather disinterested in why people are so mesmerized. But we all know why! Watching his swing will transcend one to a happy place, a peaceful State of Mind. Like your own private beach, laying down relaxing as the waves fold & crash ashore. What I noticed most, not only about Freddy but most of the pros, is the penetrating ball flight and their effortless swings, body rotation. And Freddie tops that list, hearing the ball off the club face, sound like a jet taking off, watching the low penetrating ball flight slowly start to climb until it gradually reaches its apex in the distance and begins its descent towards a precise target, exactly where it was meant to land. I've never watched myself play, but even playing more golf than ever nowadays in my mid 30s, I have a 100% feeling I don't look similar. Many of my shots may have the sound or sometimes the shape, but not all of them have the smooth swing, the sound, the trajectory, the shape, and the precise location you see on tour. Cheers!

Ya the pros make you realize just how bad you really are. I've been to several events now, but my first one was the Tour Championship in 2001 and I followed Tiger for 12 or 13 holes. To see it in person was something else. You've never even seen golf balls behave that way before. As impressive as it is on TV, it's unfathomable in real life.

I did give up the game after qualifying at a local US open Event & going to the sectionals @ Winged Foot. I played the best 36 holes in my entire life, I had an early tee time cause I was a scrub & sat at the 36th green to watch the other players come “in”. Sadly with each score posted pieces of my heart were takin with them. I went from thinking that I was playing in a U.S. open to realize that I wasn’t even close, in-fact I wasn’t even close to getting an “alternate” spot. I am not not sure that people understand how good a player like Fred Couples is

It's funny when Fred says he chunked it or toe'd it. I've heard many pro players say that Fred has never missed a shot. Sure they may go right or left, short of long. But for pure contact other pros think that Fred is magic. Obviously I couldn't speak to that. But I've watched Fred hitting balls for decades, and every shot looks like the shot before, and the shot that comes after. To my mind, he is magic.

They're not that great. They're extremely forgiving for off-center strikes, but the weight being so evenly distributed means a center strike won't have as much ball speed as a traditional shaped head. Plus, they're all obnoxiously loud.

I watched him hit balls on the range at the Memorial in about 2000, when he was in a little bit of a slump. He was hitting a 3-wood off the deck as long and high and straight as you can imagine, every shot. And then he would draw one, and then fade one, back and forth on demand. I thought, if I could hit hit a 3-wood like that, I would never carry a driver, or even golf tees for that matter.
