This entire record is for me the top interpretation of standards with contrapunctic entanglement of two communicators devoid of "theme-solo" cliche. Masterpiece !

Actually, it is a Steinway piano sound & Klein electric guitar. Frisell plays on both acoustic and electric guitar with Hersch.

It's a guitar.

It's likely a custom stray style guitar through a very nice amplifier

it is a standard jazz guitar, that is: an electric guitar that can also be played unamplified. It has sound holes like a classical or acoustic guitar, but with cello-like f sound holes rather than circular sound holes. It is not like the usual electric guitars that rock musicians use because they are solid-body guitars that cannot make a sound (or, at least, no more than a barely audible one) if they are not plugged in because they have no sound holes.

Gorgeous duet. alcorico, can you provide any info on this recording - date, location, name of album?

Originals rather than standards would have added a bit of extra sparkle, rather than the 1955 time loop vibe. Or maybe I should have said 1962 time loop because I think that is when the Bill Evans-Jim Hall duo records were done and every jazz artist on the planet started playing Jobim to death, just as was done with Piazzolla in the 1990s...oh dear. Ah, but sure...it's all good anyway, isn't it? Might check out this record someday. I like to hear Frisell play in this kind of context.

Probably the only relevant way to still play standards today, unless you're concerned with reenacting the 50s,60s,70s, like so many contemporary jazz musicians seem to be doing when playing standards

Definitely not acoustic guitar! Great album anyway.. to me the best guitar/piano jazz duo - together with Jim Hall/Bill Evans record... very interactive, natural, free...
