Fred Trump III: “I’m Concerned About This Coming Election. It’s Going To Get Very Nasty”

Fred Trump III is the nephew of former President Donald Trump and author of a new memoir about his family entitled “All In the Family: The Trumps and How We Got To Be This Way.” He says that he wrote the book in part to advocate for people with severe developmental disabilities like his adult son, William, but his story also offers some new - sometimes startling - anecdotes about his uncle over the years. He joins me to talk about it.

I devoted 29 years working with kids with disabilities & their families - Why? because I had been so inspired by my cousin with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. It was knowing her and seeing her amazing presence as we grew up together that taught me what I needed to know about life, humans and diversity. Thanks Katie, for featuring Fred III and his son here. His dignity and your care made this a beautiful interview in spite of the horrific behavior of his uncle Donald.

A few years ago, someone told me about his abusive alcoholic father. In talking about this father, his mother had been making excuses for him, talking about his going to work to support the family, having good health insurance for the family, etc. The son told her, "Just because someone is good 5% of the time, it does not make him a nice person." Fred I truly respect you coming forward now. As for your sister Mary I have high respect for her telling the truth, fighting the fight that was for your benefit also. She hasn't wavered and doesn't try to excuse any of the horrible effects your Uncle has caused for his entire life. Trump didn't change when he got in the White House (maybe to you) but listen to your own words.... how he treated your father, how he dealt with your son's condition from day one, stealing the inheritance that was suppose to be for you & Mary. Then let alone everyone along his way from his wives, his kids, employees, contractors, he screwed over anyone and everyone. Then cheating on taxes, insurance, LLCs to move money through, etc. He has been a very bad person all along. So maybe YOU had some positive interactions but what he did to Your Dad, Your Sister, Your Son alone would make most people never give him a chance to be in your life. I don't mean for this to be taken in a hateful way, but I think as long as you got things you wanted from him you pushed those evil things aside. (Actually makes me sad, especially when you said that if that devil got back in the White House you would go)😢😢😢😢😢😢 Again because that event would be more important to you than saying I will never be involved with someone so cruel. Believe me Family isn't always thicker than water. REALITY...TRUMP DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU, YOUR SON OR ANYONE ELSE BUT HIMSELF.....PERIOD

I was brought to tears by this. What a wonderful man and a heartfelt story. Donald Trump is inhumane, and he was raised to be that way. Donalds brother rejected the cult of the family and he suffered for that. He was the scapegoat. Many people have this experience in toxic families, and it's extremely painful and heartbreaking. Fred is too nice about all this. But imagine having someone as aggressive as Donald in the family. It makes people afraid and it makes them step back and watch every word spoken to avoid the vicious retaliation. I'm praying for Fred and his family and for Mary Trump too .

@@mray7503 so, then , why do you think FredIII didn’t want Mary to write / publish her book ? He says he feared it would have a negative impact on his son, then claims “ it did cause problems “ . What were those problems ? Was it that Uncle Donald would take out his outrage at Mary on FredIII; that Uncle Donald would stop all financial support for Fred’s son? So, then why would he not immediately add to his sister’s indictment of their Uncle with further even more dire evidence of DJT’s danger to our country ? My point is , FredIII missed the opportunity to expose “ the most dangerous president “ - in order to further cultivate the relationship he benefitted from - and still is not acknowledging how he, like so many past and current Trump supporters , pander to Trump for personal gain. I appreciate what he’s doing now -- with the exception of his not giving credit to his sister for opening the door to courageous disclosure of the truth for “ the greater good”.

First, I love Katie Couric for filming this without makeup. I am a woman and I don't like wearing makeup. It makes me so happy seeing a woman in media looking 'normal", just like a woman looks without spending an hour slathering products on her face. Second, I love Mary Trump and I am so proud of her for telling it like it is. I have been a long-time Mary listener. Mary does not use a lot of makeup either, which is really cool. I watched the video of Mary's reply to Fred's book. She was 100% supportive and she stands behind Fred and his book. She has had a real relationship with her brother and the two of them were robbed of their rightful inheritance by Donald and other evil Trumps. However each of them handled different aspects of their situation, the truth is that both of them were victims, like so many others, of Donald Trump. The honor the courage both of them had to stand up to this bully on the world stage. I love this video and watched it all the way through. It is wonderful to see honest journalism and to see someone sharing their truth. Not a lot of political soundbites, just honestly what happened to them. Great interview.

Donald and Fred Sr didn’t think much of Fred Jr the pilot… not only because it wasn’t a job that made as much money as the real estate business… It also wasn’t a job that made you famous. And for people that are greedy and self absorbed attention seekers, that’s “underachieving.”

Right. I agree that Donald is nuts. He stated that the Democrats are abording babies right after their born! That is totally against the law. Not only that but it is insane! Very disturbing. He is not a true conservative republican. He uses the Republic for his own uses. Kamala and Biden are the real Presidential candidate material. I don't know what Trumpism is but it is not for the Republic or to make a more perfect Union. Dictatorship, or a King is not what our Forefathers had in mind. I know that!

I Think Mary is the smarter of the siblings. How he could want his uncle's friendship is beyond me. His uncle took his inheritance, denigrated his son. Maybe Fred is a bit deaf and not hearing the devastating things his uncle says. Wait to his uncle starts mentioning his nephew at his rallies. Let's see how forgiving Fred is then. I grew up with my own two "Uncle Donalds" and growing up in my family was hell. Where there some good times? Yes, if you count individual hours and sometimes even half a day as "good times" - obviously only when those uncles weren't around. The adults arround me had already gotten used to their mysogyny, hate, spitting poison, touching every female person (children included) whether they liked it or not and expressed that, no one ever sued them for any of it etc. etc. Plus: one had a disabled son. That son had a "normal" brother. So, whenever he came to visit (after my aunt had divorced him), he expressedly stated he would only do so if he got to see only his "normal" son - he never went to see his disabled son (although they were brothers living with their mom under the same roof!). Now, explain that to the disabled son (who did notice and was hurt)! Men like Donald Trump suck at being human. I'm still looking for a word that truly fits them but haven't been able to come up with one. I just know that I never want to be anywhere near such a person ever again - even if that means cutting of people I generally like but who are in contact with such "beings".

It takes maturity and insight to realize 2 people can have different experiences in the same family and realize both are legitimate viewpoints. But it sounds like when Mary wrote her book he saw it as a threat to his child bc he needed financial help from the family to care for him. Bad part is it makes him feel conflicted to stand up to a bully who trashed his father and went to the movies when his father was taking his last breath in a hospital. AND told him he should let his child die. Not sure what it would take for him to actually admit his uncle is a heat seeking reptile with zero redeemable qualities. I suspect he’s scared. I can understand that.

💯🎯💯🎯💯🎯 I'm just a few minutes in, and thought it would be great with Katie starting off with that banger of a question, but after listening to Fred for ... however long it's been now, I don't think I'll be able to watch the whole thing. The Donald-apologist attitude is just too much to take. Mary's only two years younger than Fred, so he doesn't know that much more than her. She came out with a video yesterday backing up his version of events, and then he throws her under the bus to defend Donald. Nope. I get it - he's got a disabled son he needs money to care for. But if he were truly honest in interviews, his book would sell like hotcakes and he'd be set. I was going to buy it, but not now. I don't trust him after this.

We are all trying to survive our childhoods. If you had a loving family you’re probably good. But if while your brain is developing as a child you’re confronted with pain, trauma, insecurity, instability, confusion, fear, hostility and abandonment, life becomes a muddy hill to climb with nothing to grab onto. You have to bust your butt to dig your way out. Some are too broken to do so. You can’t build a sturdy house without a foundation. Childhood is the foundation. A child needs to be the sparkle in someone’s eye. If not, they can grow up being driven by fear and loneliness always sure someone is going to throw them away. Mary and Fred have had a lot to struggle with. Both deserve empathy.

He is not a bad man. Mary has the advantage of an education that has given her more insight. Fred has been in the trenches trying to keep his son alive. He is coming out of a very dark place. He’s compromised himself trying to hang on to resources to help his son. It’s a dilemma. I really hope he can sort things out with his sister. She loves him and probably understands where he’s coming from. I doubt she would want people to dog pile on her brother.
