I'm so happy to have found this video. Chico Mendoza Sr. Was my son's great grandfather. He always told us stories about him and his son Chico many matches but we never had any footage until now. Thank you

Fred Blassie was Southern Heavyweight Champion in Georgia three times at around this time in the early 1960s.

Dude debuted in 1935, my mother wasn't even born yet, and still wrestled 25 years later. Put 50 years into the business, what a career and one of the best managers ever.

Classy Freddie wrestled until 1975 when an auto accident ended his career. He wrestled with one kidney for 10 years after he had to have it removed in the mid 60s. 40 years is a long damn wrestling career!

Trivia:The referee in this match Mike Mazurski was also an actor who played Igor on the Gilligan's Island episode 'the friendly physician' amongst other movies.I enjoy watching old classic wrestling and would like to see wwwf wrestling from 1971-1973.During that period Fred Blassie was managed by Lou Albano,Austin Idol wrestled under his real name Mike Mc Cord and Vince McMahon took over Ray Morgan's job as wwwf announcer. If you or anyone on KZbin has any video's of this time period PLEASE,PLEASE POST THEM!!!

his battles with John Tolos in So.Cal were legendary. I can still here Tolos saying (with the Ri. 9-5171 in the background) and the way you spell wrestling is -T-O-L-O-S....went to a tv taping once and Dick Lane flipped the bird to the audience

Fred claimed the reason he looked older was due to the wear and tear being on the road and wrestling practically every night. But I say a big part of it was his passion for tanning. He did more tanning than exercising I bet. The uv rays can age your skin faster over time.

Never saw Mike Mazurki in the ring only in movies and TV shows. Blassie was awesome in this match! I never heard the triplets bit before.

This match was begging for some headscissors in the beginning and both wrestlers were either to stupid or thought the headscissors were not macho enough to use. All through this match the headscissors were the better option to use than what they used.

Too bad the video quality is poor and that the ref interferes way too much. No one wants a ref to take himself seriously. Freddie Blassie was THE boss stud of his generation. The match seems slow and tame by 1970-95 standards. Blassie needed to be free of his handcuffs so he could apply his biceps and boots more generously. Also, unfortunately he doesn't apply his patented figure four grapevine here. When he did, jobbers writhed in misery and newfound respect.

+Boots Hartman Fairly sure you're thinking of Nature Boy Buddy Rogers with the figure four grapevine, my friend. Freddie Blassie used the swinging neckbreaker unless I'm mistaken

+Axlsmith1 I have no doubt that I did err there. My apology. Rogers and Blassie were both favorites of mine when I was a kid way back when, watching telecasts from Chicago, as I recall. Both of those guys were arrogant peacock-like blond heels who sold their abuse of jobbers much better than most. I thought they both specialized in figure-four grapevines, but I trust your memory on this. Maybe - and just maybe - Blassie at some point "managed" a 1980s wrestler who used the grapevine, and perhaps that's when I began criss-crossing the finishing moves of Blassie and Rogers. It's too bad that the videos (from old kinescopes, I'm guessing) of the early Blassie matches and Rogers matches are of such poor quality. I'd love to see good copies of their best matches with jobbers. Thanks for your clarification.

You're absolutely spot on when you say both Blassie and Rogers where both arrogant peacock like heels. Two of the greatest heels to ever lace up a pair of boots. I agree, it is sad that good quality copies of matches from the golden age of wrestling are hard to come by.

+Axlsmith1 We're on the same page, all right. One thing: When I do see a match from the 1950s, it looks much more kayfabe to me now than it did then. I think the guys had not yet fully adapted to the close-ups of TV cameras. But I sure liked to see the blond pit bulls take down their jobbers and put the boots to them. I could BELIEVE in those heels in that their looks and attitudes corresponded to the working-over they provided. You could see how much they enjoyed their dominance. Later, Waldo Von Erich carried that off well. Then Arn Anderson, Buzz Sawyer, the Road Warriors, Col. DeBeers, George Steele, the Iron Sheik, etc. But Blassie and Rogers lead with their biceps and burly chests before those guys.

Absolutely agree. Their gritty, deliberate, hard hitting style is worlds apart from the fast paced, flashy style of today, but you really get a sense the likes of Rogers and Blassie are genuinely bad guys who enjoy hurting their opponents. One thing I do enjoy in these old videos is the crowds, they are rabid! Baying for the heels blood! good times.

I think it was Blassie who said “ it would be a pleasure to kill a man in the ring “ I read it in one of those wrestling mags.
