(Montserrat Caballé Folch; Barcelona, 1933 - 2018) Catalan singer (Barcelona, Spain). Trained in Barcelona, she stood out for her lyrical soprano voice, with bello pianissimo in the high register. Specialist in the bel canto repertoire, she was one of the first voices in the world due to her vocal quality, inspiration and perfect mastery of technique.

The soprano's name, Montserrat Caballé, is pronounced MONT-serat CAB-eye-ay (as in the letter A). Fair do's, it trips a lot of people up who don't speak Spanish! I don't speak it either, but I've heard her name so many times, it stuck! She was, in her time, the prima soprano in the world. She too has since followed Freddie into that great big auditorium in the sky. "Barcelona" was a song competing to be the official Olympic song for 1992 when Barcelona would host it. Sadly, Freddie didn't live to see it win, but yes, it won. It reached number 8 in the UK charts and was reputed to be one of Mercury's biggest hits in his solo career. Montserrat was, obviously, an opera singer and Freddie always loved opera, so this pairing was bound to happen. It was only supposed to be one song, but Montserrat insisted that they do an entire album, which they did.

One of the most amazing things about Freddie was his composition skill. To be able to write a song like this, knowing exactly what be wanted it to portray, is a God-given miracle, in my mind.
@PT95462 жыл бұрын
Freddie wrote this song for her. It was used in the Barcelona olympics but Freddie didn't live long enough to see it. He was a big fan of hers and when she heard about it she wanted to collaborate with him eventually this would be the first of a whole album.

Montserrat was Freddie's idol. He thought she had the most beautiful voice in the world. When he was in Spain one time he was asked who his favorite singer was and he mentioned her. She heard of this and contacted him and they met. He wrote a song especially for her and sang it into a cassette in as close to her voice as he could get: "Exercises in Free Love". They hit it off and she asked him to write ten songs for them to do an album together. She also surprised him by singing his creation for her at Covent Garden and introducing him as the composer. Freddie was over the moon once he had her voice on his music. Two more beautoful songs from this album are Guide Me Home and How Can I Go on.

New to your channel and really impressed by the enthusiasm and intelligence of your reaction to this. I’ve listened to this song more times than I can say and it still gives me goosebumps. There’s a live version on KZbin that’s even more intense - live at La Nit 1988 remastered - unmissable. They also do some other songs together at La Nit. As for quality from the past look at The Beatles - they never disappoint. Such a huge range.

This was written for the 1992 summer Olympics in Barcelona. Even though Freddie had passed in 1991 it was played during the Opening Ceremony. You’re right it’s a grandiose piece an Opening Ceremony requires. Great reaction! You also need to listen to “Golden Boy”. Only Freddie would fuse opera with rock, gospel and soul.
@ursabobsage3512 жыл бұрын
This was not actually written for the Olympics in Barcelona. It was just used for them. Freddie wrote this to honor Montserrat and her hometown of Barcelona.

He wrote this and the other songs on the album this is on for the two of them. They had hoped to sing this live for opening ceremonies of the Barcelona Olympics, but he had to tell her how sick he was and that he probably wouldn't live that long. She was one of the few who knew. There were a couple other songs on the album that she sang live with others, but she always refused to do this one with anyone else.

Actually, it had nothing to do with Montserrat or for Montserrat. It was made before they collaborated, it was the B side to The Great Pretender. But, Freddie did show this to Montserrat which is why Ensueno was made.

Literally the official theme song for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It seriously pisses me off that he left, not only too soon, but before the actual Olympics, so he didn't get to see the real reaction to it, where it was made for.

Dear James, 👏👏👏! Freddie loved operas, ballets and the whole theatrical world and he was inspired by these genres. This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history. Montserrat mentioned, that it was a great service towards the people who never listend to opera before, because their collaboration definitely increased the popularity of opera. Freddie and his friend Mike Moran composed a whole duet album with beautiful music and lyrics. In case of 2 songs they asked Sir Tim Rice to write the lyrics and these were the Golden Boy and the Fallen Priest. Don't miss them out! Or you can try the demo version of the Fallen Priest called Rahcmaninov's revenge (later version) in which Freddie was singing Montserrat's parts. I mean, he was singing both parts. Amazing surprise!

Caballe is the opera voice here, a true diva. Lots of folk yearn to sing in opera and a few who have talent & discipline and with application & luck succeed. Then there are the 'Florence Jenkins' of the world who with money behind them can put themselves out there in an operatic way, but money doesn't buy the notes.
