Listen to the “Jazz” album… with headphones or earbuds or something: from ‘78 to ‘86 Mercury’s voice was overwhelmingly superhuman. Absolutely NO-ONE sounded like him.

Jazz proved that Queen can cover ANY genre. Hell, on Stone Cold Crazy (Sheer Heart Attack), he was a pioneer of the rock/rap subgroup. Queen, especially Freddie, could just do whatever he wanted and it worked (Except Back Chat)

I'm a respiratory therapist and I'm trained to insert the breathing tube for putting a person on mechanical breathing machines a.k.a. ventilators. A special device is required to move the tongue out of the way to view the vocal cords. Yes, false cords are real and in some adults, they look as big as the true vocal cords. We were taught to make sure we don't use excess force inserting the tube because it will potentially cause scar tissue and cause damage to the voice quality. It may sound petty compared to losing your life, but if the patient's profession is singing, or lecturing, you could ruin their career! Now this clip states that Freddy's vocal capability was evaluated by scientists to look into its biological source. Providing this was done when Freddy was alive and well, I'd believe the validity of the clip. However if they were merely listening to recordings and " guessing " the cause of his range, then this is NO better than the people posting in this thread! His overbite has nothing to do with his ability. The false cords DO sit close to the actual vocal cords and do vibrate, but in and of themselves don't produce a voice. The vibration CAN be strong enough to create a raspy quality like a saxophone . A sort of growl in the lower register, becoming more raspy as the octave gets higher. The singer Bonnie Raitt has that quality, but its natural in her voice. Deborah Harry of Blondie has a similar quality, but she has the ability to sound as soft as velvet, and then go to a gritty sound . That is the true vocal cords doing the work but the false cords MAY factor in. Repeated growling and rasp can damage the true vocal cords over time . Freddy was blessed to have the vocal ability he did, and could go from a whisper to a belted out roar / scream, and a baritone low, to a soprano high range!! R.I.P. Freddy

Freddy refused to get his teeth fixed....because HE BELIEVED his teeth helped push sound out... His own words....and to do with word annunciation within the song

Since Freddie passed away in 1991, I very much doubt this clip is based on anything other than guess work on how he sounds. But I'm curious, would you say there are any anatomical differences or traits that exceptional singers have in common? Or is it more just a matter of specialised skill than anatomical advantage? Or some combination of both, like being an athlete for example?

I have 4 octaves! And still have a strong clear young sounding voice at the age of 72. I can sing Bass and Soprano and all in between. Yes, a voice can be a weapon. I have this because I sing Gospel, giving the Glory to God. It is God who gave me my voice, nothing from me really, all from Him. I have hit notes off the piano scale.
