However, its an actually story in 3 parts. 1st part is the drug calling to the victim to take more, you kind of know that its not good for you but you cannot fight it anymore. The second part (melodic/breakdown) is when the victim gets the drug (the high). The Third part is the betrayal, regret, guilt, dependence. This song is everything.

Gotta agree, it normally takes folks until "chop your breakfast on a mirror" at least before they start considering drugs. But I'll also say this as a metalhead, I generally prefer to listen to songs (at least at first) without regard for the lyrics themselves, the singer's voice serving more as an instrument which accompanies the music. So I do think it's just as cool when someone is focused on enjoying the instrumentation over the lyrics.

The song starts high energy, like the craving for the drug running through your veins, making you jittery,, but if you notice when the guitar solo comes and Lars’s voice saying “master” starts to fade and that guitar slows and becomes sweet, that’s showing the moment when you take a hit and for that moment, there’s no craving, just euphoria. That euphoria fades quickly though, and the craving and desperation comes back, worse than before, and you see that the peace you got from the high is a lie, but you need another high, again, and you’re calling to your master. The cycle repeats until you die.

@@JBSampson88 A psychward is not something many people have experience with nor would I ever wish that anyone would, and thats the reason sanatorium trips me out, I have to see people who are confused, told to take medication that can make them numb, the doors are locked, no escape, everyone around you knows what's wrong with you but still fail to actually understand, this can lead to things like violence and self mutilation, the depths of that horrible experience was shared in that song at a level I wish our staff understood. Metallica is my all time favorite band and its because their depth of writing and ability to translate are second to none.

"This is straight poetry". Now you know why us rock lovers feel like so much newer music is terrible. We define music as poetry set to amazing sound. I remember being totally confused by the question "do you like music". I mean, who the heck doesn't like music? Then I came to realize that some people don't get that heartwrenching whole body feeling of connection and understanding and expression when they listen. Maybe they just don't listen to music that has real poetry in it, or maybe they just don't hear the poetry when they listen. Even though you aren't as thrilled by the sound, which I totally get, I could see that you were excited and jamming to it because of the message. That was awesome to see.

The song itself is a roller coaster, like being on drugs is. Its angry, its mellow, its insane, etc... In my 20s back in the 1990s I did A L O T of coke. I was living and working in Hollywood and thought it was the "good life". The line in this song that goes 'blinded by me you cant see a thing' is totally fucking true! I wish I could see the alternate universe where Cliff lived and they continued to grow from Puppets. Of course Justice was incredible but it's a bit unfocused and chaotic. The writing suffered heavily without Cliff there to add his perspective, he seemed like the most musically gifted one. It was him and James together that made Puppets what it was. We can only imagine what that next album would have sounded like. It wouldnt have been Justice but I think it would have been even better. I would sacrifice Justice to get that album instead.

everything about this song is FIRE. the lyrics talking about drug abuse. as well as the music itself, being like what someone on drugs would go through. the start is fast and hectic, a little panic to it (like someone not having and looking for their fix). the breakdown, slower part (like someone that just got their fix).songs speeds up a bit (like someone starting to come down off the high, realizing they need more) ending goes crazy ( sobered up and now back to where you started, freaking out looking for more)

Fun fact: When James Hetfield writes his lyrics, he already has the melody and syllables set and just finds words that fit and then goes back to make sure it makes sense. I love that the song structure itself plays into the meaning of the song. The intro is aggressive and angry, the drug trying to convince them to use more, then they give in and use again and it gets all mellow and chilled out and relaxed and ethereal, until the inevitable comedown hits and it gets real dark before going back to convincing them to use again. 10/10.

I grew up a serious Hip-Hop head back in the 90s. Nothing but rap was what I listened to. But... the past 10-15yrs or so, I pretty much only listen to Rock.
