Rest in Power, Freddie. You did things on that steel no other human has duplicated. Thanks for all the sweet, sweet times.

Freddie is playing a National "Special 8" steel guitar - made in the late 40's and early 50's. I have one very similiar - very few of these around. There are 2 and 3 neck console models but not may singles. The 23 inch scale and "massic" pickup give these a marvelous tone - you can hear it. And Freddy makes it sing.

He told me his white bakelite bar "came with the guitar". He also sprays Finger Ease string lube all over the strings and his bar/hand. I was a little shocked.

Amazing. Such a different voice on a lap steel guitar.

Lindley talked about how Freddy told him he used heavy gauge strings and a "Steel" with a steel core but enrobed in a lighter material to get his unique tone, as seen here; maybe nylon?

@jonsawyer Oh cool! I've been playing with the idea of tuning to G minor as it solves the open-G problem of how to switch from major to minor chords quickly and easily. Very interesting.... :)

To the best of my knowledge, Freddie and the "The Black Ace" were the only known Blues Lap Steele players. There is a school of "Sacred Steele" that Robert Randolph came from but that is Gospel not Blues If anyone knows of any other Blues Lap steel players, let me know

I know what you mean. Sounds kinda' 'modern' but Santo Farina couldn't have made "Sleep Walk" without it. E9 is more of a 'country' sound,i guess. If you want to hear some wild slide style guitar check out Jerry Douglas on Dobro
