Oddly, Freddie and Emily ignored Harris’s surprisingly brief remarks on the Russo-Ukrainian War, the largest war on European war since the Second World War: “Five days before Russia attacked Ukraine, I met with President Zelensky to warn him about Russia’s plan to invade. I helped mobilize a global response- over 50 countries-to defend against Putin’s aggression. And as President, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies.” A fuller timeline of events, which Freddie and Emily might have provided, is enlightening. On February 16 the Ukrainian government dramatically increased their artillery barrage against the mainly Russophone population of Donbas. The next day, February 17, unindicted war criminal Joe Biden told reporters that “my sense is this [a Russian invasion of Ukraine] will happen within the next several days.” He didn’t give the bombardment by Kyiv as the reason of this, of course. Rather, “they have not moved any of their troops out. They have moved more troops in.” At this time, Harris was on her way to the Munich Security Conference, held from February 18 to 20. It was on the second day of that conference that Harris met Zelensky, where she says she warned him that Russia planned to invade Russia. She didn’t tell him that America was mightily aggrieved about the enhanced bombardment of the Donbas, which Russia would see as a provocation and to knock it off. One would assume that this was because America wanted to provoke a Russian invasion. The former Swiss military colonel, Jacques Baud, has said that this action by the Kyiv government left Russia with no choice between an invasion of Ukraine and acceding to the obliteration of the population of the Donbas. This is a little too strong. As Paul Robinson has pointed out, they could have helped the Donetsk and Luhansk republics with military aid much as NATO has done with Ukraine, at least for a while, and tried to negotiate a better arrangement. However, there is no doubt that this bombardment was a provocation on the part of Washington and Kyiv. It is ludicrous to claim that the Russian invasion was unprovoked. Also, in the wake of JD Vance’s magisterial op-ed “The Math on Ukraine Doesn’t Add Up”, Harris’s promise to “stand strong with Ukraine” rings a little hollow. Russia is advancing steadily to the west to seize the parts of the Donbas it does not already control, and $60B in additional US aid has done nothing to stop it.
