I have used hot rollers for years, actually because I mentioned to my hairdresser that I wished I could do a nice blow dry on myself (definitely a skill!) and she told me hot rollers would give the same effect. I always wonder why tongs are so much more popular because I love how I can quickly put in my rollers and do my makeup while they cool down.
