On April 10 1741, a Prussian army under King Frederick II faced an Austrian army under Count Wilhelm Reinhard von Neipperg. The small electorate of Prussia challenged the mighty Habsburg Dynasty, without a doubt the most powerful dynasty of the Holy Roman Empire. It was the first of many major military engagements of the young Prussian King, who would later become known as Frederick the Great.

The iron ramrod doesn't make firing faster, but just lasts longer. As a reenactor, I fire muskets with both ramrods, and other than the type of lock, the speed is determined by sheer practice. The faster rate of fire could be caused entirely by having experienced and well-drilled soldiers fighting untrained recruits.
@HoH
@HoH 2 жыл бұрын
Doesn't it lasting longer and being less prone to breaking automatically lead to soldiers reloading/preparing their musket much faster because they don't have to worry about the ramrod breaking in the process? That is the impression I got from the sources, although indeed, the experience of the soldiers definitely played its part.
@webcelt
@webcelt 2 жыл бұрын
@@HoH I doubt they would be thinking about that during a battle when their focus would be on being fast on staying in line while being shot at. The wood would hold up through a battle, maybe a whole campaign, and in peacetime maybe for the life of the musket But if a ramrod broke, it would be the wooden one, so the replacement makes sense in terms of not risking having it break when needed. In terms of speed though, that's the training and experience of the soldier. If I'm in a race with someone new at loading a musket using iron, and me using a wooden ramrod, I'm going to win that easily. If you hadn't mentioned the Austrians included many raw recruits, I would be mystified by the difference in rate of fire. Soldiers in line infantry fire at the rate of the slowest soldier.
@maco3893
@maco3893 2 жыл бұрын
@@webcelt There are many historical sources about the Age of Musket that even the Prussian Infantry did not fire in coordinatet salvos after the first Initial volley but instead every soldier fired at will as fast as he was capable. Everything else was not really possible to coordinate for the officers in an ongoing firefight. The famous three-rounds-per-minute ratio has to been seen as an Ideal. Beside the ordinary Musketier did not carry so much ammunition to shoot at this rapid pace over longer time. Even there are sources that the Prussian Army made it possible to got ammunition supplies during a battle to the Battalions this was a very difficult task in a 18th Century Battle. In consequence you have to consider that the real rate of fire was much slower.

Afaik Prussian iron ramrods throughout this era were very heavy and cylindrical. The point was that you didn't need to rotate it to reload the firearm, which probably did save a second or two. Prussian muskets also, I think, in a later time period had a very interesting system for the musket touch hole (or however the hole between the pan and barrel is called), which was self-priming and thus allowed to skip that step entirely.

I think Mr. Ferguson's main point, that the training was the pre-eminent factor above all others, is most valid here. Tech was fine, but during this period strong command and organizational structures were generally more decisive.

Prussian history full of wars, numerous kills, occupations, oppressions, roberies and attaks on neighbouring countries for next pice of territory and some booty. Keep in mind Frederic II was bloody aggressor and conquereor. There is nothing to love, when so many people died and suffer with his numerous aggressions. Can you see that, he did not care about people, numerous death and misery in his wars. He did not care even about his own men, sending them to die in his name in so many wars. That was a very good & accurate review/ run down of the battle, Ima new subscriber, I believe historymarche gave you guys a shoutout or kings and generals, and that’s how I came over, I just wanted to say that your channel and narrations are right up there with the best such as kings and generals, historymarche, Simon whistler so on and so on, I love all military history and warfare, but this “musket age” in my favorite time in history, just a suggestion from a fan, but you should do more videos from that time period, roughly 1500-late 1800s without diving too deep into the major conflicts & characters that are already main stream / well known to most, well all know about napoleon, and the American revolution, some people know about the 7years war/Austrian succession. As a person who has been studying/ watching history videos for years, I wanna see the lesser known yet consequential battles / wars, like I would love to learn about the battles of the Sun King, or the Dutch Spanish war, or the great northern war, I would love to learn the breakdown of some of the battles between Europe’s great powers and native peoples also during this time, the Brits, french, Dutch,etc in India, Africa, Asia, the Americas, etc I love accident warfare as well but like I said just from a humble fan’s perspective, roughly 1400-late 1800s is an area of history hardly touched on by most and it’s a shame, at least when you talk about the actual tactical & strategic breakdown of battles. I had heard the story of how the great king of Prussia was forced to flee the field and vowed never too again, but I didn’t know exactly how the battle had played out, now I do, so thank you, you guys at house of history do a good job at story telling and engaging, nice job and I can’t wait to see more of what you guys got, I’ll be watching all of your videos, not just the ones from my favorite time period. Keep it up house of history you guys will be big 💯

Sounds logical and entirely possible, but difficult to prove. One of our main sources for this engagement is Frederick's own subsequent writings, in which he downplays all the previous kings, Schwerin, etc. But always remember Frederick was a very flawed character in many ways, he himself admitted as much and this battle shows some of those flaws in full display. As mentioned here his beginning positioning was entirely off, he had the stronger infantry yet knowingly put himself directly opposite the most powerful elements of the opposing force (left wing Austrian cavalry). He was always likely to be swept off the battlefield in that position, and I imagine Schwerin as well as the other veterans knew it.
@granddukeofmecklenburg

von Schwerin fought under Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy in some of the greatest battles of the war of spanish Succession, and in the Great Northern war fought at Gadebusch with the swedes, and worked under Charles XII till being arrested by the swede. He had already seen and fought under the best of the best before He came to the Prussian Court after catching Prussias eye when he won what seemed like a hopeless battle, leading Mecklenburgs army against the Hanoverians at Walsmühlen. Few if any Generals on the fields of Europe had von Schwerins experience by Mollwitz.

I consider his "History of Frederick II of Prussia" an essential and irreplaceable source. Let's remember that a great part of the Prussian/German military archives of Potsdam were destroyed during WW2. Carlyle was the ONLY non-German historian able to make use of those priceless archives. Christopher Duffy's "The Army of Frederick the Great" is fairly good but his spiteful (and very English) anti-Prussian bias clouded his judgement. Thank you very much! Regards.

OK, let's unpack a little. First of all, there is no mention of Anhalt-Dessau, which was the mastermind behind the creation of the prussian army during the soldier king's reign. Frederick does not take him in his first campaign for fear of him taking all the credit. He does have the common sense of taking Schwerin, though, which was a very experienced officer. But you have to wonder how disappointed Anhalt-Dessau was for not taking part in the first real action of the clockwise machinery that he has build. Because, while having one of the best armies in Europe, Frederic-Wilhelm never had the heart of using this deadly tool, for fear that his precious soldiers and his very exact budget will have to suffer. So much so, that he became a joke in Europe and no one was really afraid of him. This will actually be the first real campaign for the prussian army since the war of Spanish Succession/ Northern War (the war for polish succession is not worth mentioning). Second of all, while having a first class infantry, the prussians actually had one of the worst cavalry in Europe. This is probably due to the lack of martial tradition of the prussian nobility. Although started in the reign of Frederick-Wilhelm, the militarization of the small prussian nobility - the junkers - really sets in during the reign of Frederick the Great. The King protects the nobility's interest, while they devote themselves to the army. However, this relation is weak back in 1740. Furthermore, the austrians have one of the best light cavalry in Europe, recruited especially from their possessions in Hungary - the feared hussars. Frederick will be so impressed by their performances, that he will rebuild his cavalry corps - aided by talented officers like von Zieten - copying the austrian model. Thirdly, Schwerin makes the right call by asking the King to flee, because at that point the battle is lost. There is no masterplan to get rid of the King in order to freely maneuver the troops and gain the victory. The prussian infantry is engaged in a march, and - by 18th century rules - can't maneuver against a mobile cavalry. That is because the conversion from march formation to line of battle or - god forbids - a square is a complicated lengthy maneuver which can't be planned, ordered and executed in the time the galloping austrian cavalry needs before smashing in to the prussian undefended flank. Except this is no ordinary infantry. This is a highly professional, highly drilled unit, which executes the maneuver without any order and to perfection. the second rank turns to the right as one forming half a square and starts pouring in the unsuspected seemingly victorious cavalry. That is why this battle and the one at Kunersdorf (where the prussian army is smashed, and scattered around a large area, but the fleeing soldiers reform their units so quickly, that in a few weeks Frederick - who was contemplating suicide - has again an army) are so special - they highlight the degree of professionalism of this army. Fourthly - saying the prussian infantry fired 4 times as fast as the austrians is simply ludicrous. Contemporary to that period, probably the best drilled unit - the Coldstream Guards - fired about 5 shots a minute on the parade ground. That converts to 3 shots at most on the battlefield, where everyone is shooting at you, your hands are trembling and you can also be ordered to maneuver or fill the ranks at any time. On the other hand, I believe that even an aging parkinson afflicted Muhammad Ali could load a musket in under a minute. So probably the prussian advantage over the austrians might have been 3 shots to 2 per minute. Which is still a huge accomplishment, increasing in effect the prussian force (which already overwhelmed the austrian infantry in numbers) by 50%.

Funny how an army that was "modern" in 1740 had become inadequate by the time Napoleon entered the stage. Eventually he was defeated by rivals who imitated Old Boney's corps system and other innovations. BTW what was the butcher's bill at the end? Must've been weighted heavily in Prussia's favor due to their advantage in musketry.

Was Frederick's the Great's father "King of Prussia" or "King in Prussia"? I've honestly forgotten, but aside from that piece of pedantry from me, this is a really good video

I'm guessing Frederick omitted Schwerin in his letters because he was angry with him. Frederick had left the field at his urging, probably assuming that the battle was lost, only to later hear that it had been won. He probably felt that Schwerin had made him look foolish, and possibly that Schwerin wanted the glory for himself.

Yo btw. It isn"t called Brandenburg back in the day. It was western Prussia.

No, West Prussia was still part of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Basically, after the Thirteen Years War between the Teutonic Order and Poland, the Poles won and took the Western Part of Prussia(called Royal Prussia/West Prussia). and then the Eastern Part was left as an independent, if not a rump state that'll be acquired by the elector of Brandenburg. what the Channel Author said is right historically, as the title "King in Prussia" only apply to Ducal/Eastern Prussia and their title in HRE are still "the Elector and Margrave of Brandenburg"
