What's probably more accurate is that some of the songs that Fred Hammond wrote for Commissioned were influenced by those secular groups

Commissioned dropped albums in the early 80s, when those secular groups were still church kids (at least the groups mentioned anyway). But I’d def say Fred was influenced by earlier R&b, especially motown

@@aprilaries164 Incorrect..the secular groups that influenced some of Fred's production while with Commissioned (during the early to mid 80's) were the funk groups of the 60's/70"s!..then later in the late 80's, the secular groups that were using the popular New Jack Swing style of music also influenced some of Fred's production while with Commissioned during the late 80's & early 90's..

No that is nor more accurate. The groups he mentioned were influenced by Commissioned. Commissioned was influenced by artists that came before them.

I would go so far as to say that on Jodeci's "U and I" when they get to the end of the song and during part of the hook they sing a part in there that says, "before you take it in," which sounds like a little bit of Commissioned. They were definitely influenced by them, no doubt! At the 3:10 mark you'll hear them sing that part that sounds little like that Commissioned sound. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r36pemR6n7Jlp8k
