I don't know if this will be read, but I think we need to understand the pressure of the real estate business in New York. I am particularly impressed with Luis who faces competition on a daily basis with agents, clients and owners. Now I hope Luis reads this. Luis, estoy aprendiendo el idioma castellano. En Australia, el inmobilario es muy competitiva. El mercado de bienes es muy caro y en particular hay muchos empresarios chinos que compran vivendas y chalets en milliones de dólares. I'm a fan of the show but very misleading for any of them to state that they came from nothing. They all came from wealthy families, pretty much top 1%. And this is noted in the show by themselves. You have no chance trying to be a high end RE broker in NYC unless you have a way to cover your living expenses for 1-3 years as you battle it out to start generating income or you get into the business with instant clients. So either parents are supporting you or your family/social circle is a solid client base. Likely both. Even if you are busting your ass as a rental broker on the cheapest apartments in NYC, you are not making living income at the very least the first 6 months, likely 9-12 months.

I can only comment regarding Fredrik Eklund. I respect Eklund and he is by far the nr 1 real estate broker in the world, but I also feel he exaggerates "coming from nothing into NY real estate". I study at the same school he went to and this business school is one of the top business schools in Europe. His father is also a famous Swedish economist and Fredrik also earned a lot of money as a young IT entrepreneur, resources that opened doors for him of course in a very expensive NY city as he started his career as a real estate broker.

I've been reading Fredrik's book The Sell, so while he did have connections in Sweden that meant nothing in New York. In fact, he didn't even finish the school. When he first came to NYC, was sharing a place with a group of friends, the red carpet was not rolled out for him. My sister lives next door to a famous French actor's daughter and her family. No special treatment here, in Europe she would be so set. Btw, hs book is excellent and I am a Real Estate professional.

Not saying he had the business handed to him but let's be realistic here, his family background & connections counted plenty when you consider what it takes to simply survive as RE broker living in NYC. Fredrik, Ryan and Luis saying they came from nothing is like Trump saying he built his RE empire (or whatever is left of it) from nothing. Do you think it's a coincidence that all three of them come from wealthy families?

You're missing the point. Fredrik comes from a wealthy family, and he had an IT company before he went into real estate. He would probably never have made it if his parents weren't rich. The same goes for Ryan and Luis.

I've said previously that Luis brings to my mind images of the late John F. Kennedy, Jr., and the great composer Cole Porter. And now that I think about it, he reminds me of Las Vegas wunderkind, Steve A. Wynn. As to style but not looks, Luis is on par with the late Argentinian movie star, Fernando Lamas, whom I used to see in the early 60s coming into a building at 6399 Wilshire Boulevard, with his son, Lorenzo, holding his hand. Interestingly enough, some ten years later, I think, if memory serves me well, I often saw Eric Braden (someone who knew him said it was really "Hans." I don't know) strolling down Westwood Boulevard pushing a child in a baby carriage. He hadn't made it yet to his appearance in a recurring role on a television soap opera.

No he didn't at that point he was refering to other brokers in the city "what sets you apart from your colleagues or at least from the more mediocre ones". This means what sets you apart from mediocre brokers period not what sets you apart from Ryan and Luis who are mediocre
