I’m currently in my second year at an acting conservatory in Hollywood, and what you’ve given me is, in my opinion, more than I’ve ever gotten from other instructors, actors, or other professionals. Thank you for simplifying it. I fear so many actors get lost in the new technical terms, but really it simply goes back to human nature, as you said. Have a wonderful day! :)

hello and thank you very much for taking the time to do this videos, I am an aspiring actor. It is something I always wanted to do but just recently started to actually to pursue, I am no spring chicken I am actually 48 years old and sometimes I feel a little "out of reality" for trying to do it but accidentally I bumped on one of your videos where you mention living with no regrets, and that totally took away the fears of doing it because of my age, I probably will never be nominated for an Oscar -you never know- but I really enjoy doing this and will follow your videos to learn. Blessing and hope you keep doing this for those who enjoy acting.

Thanks, Brad. It keeps us grounded in the objective for the character. Easier said than done. Requires studying. I got script once and I studied it then I got a sorry and a goodbye. lol. Guess they changed their mind. Would have been my first job. I was so into it.

Notes from the video: 1. Describe the movie/story in 25-50 words. The chances of you getting the part decreases significantly if you don’t understand the meaning and purpose of the story. 2. What is the point of the film? Why did the author write the story? What are they trying to teach you? By asking this, you’re keeping your acting authentic and truthful. Whatever the story, just know the point of it. Example: “I better look happy, because Tide has made me happy.” 3. What happens in the scene? Describe it in 25-50 words. This is for the same purpose as question 1. 4. What is the point of the scene? Why did the author put this scene in the film? What do I need to accomplish, as the actor, to make sure the writers and directors’ vision is fulfilled? What sort of behavior should the audience see in you? 5. Who or what is the protagonist to our scene? A protagonist is whoever or whatever the audience is rooting for in the scene. The protagonist can change from scene to scene. It can also be a person, body of people, or relationship. A character has to have likability. What does that mean? You don’t LIKE Darth Vader. Likability means the audience is intrigued and drawn to watch that character. Every single part you play has to have this element. Why am I going to spend my precious time watching someone who’s a turn off and annoying? Don’t be mistaken, you can play a character that’s annoying, but they still have to be likable. Example: Dwight from The Office. He’s annoying.. loud… but there’s still something about him that’s lovable. Knowing how to put that into a part is extraordinarily important. Many times actors who audition are very likable people in the real world. But as soon as they start to act, they become negative, tense, angry, or sarcastic. It’s sort of like “Where did the person I met before, go?” Understand, that if you are not feeling secure about your work, it will bleed through, and your acting will come off as angry and sarcastic. It sounds crazy, but the reality is it’s way easier to play those qualities than being open, available, vulnerable and likable. It’s just harder to create an open character. So, keep this in mind when working a scene. Ask yourself periodically, am I coming off as aggressive or annoying? Why would I want to create a character that is obnoxious, even to me? Make sure you dig deep. Ask yourself, why am I saying this line? How do I feel about what the other person just said? Their words carry force, and that is what will launch me into my next line. As actors, we can’t get away with faking it. If I, as the character, have no idea what I’m staying, then it’s fake and forced. And if it’s fake, it will lose the audience. An audience can’t connect to something that’s non-human. They need to have a real person using a human mechanism to relate to them. “That person reminds me of me." OR "That person reminds me of someone I know.” Before I trained with Don Richardson, I used to hear the command “Just Be.” How on earth do you just be?? What are they really saying? This is what I believe they’re saying. Don’t just be, but Just Receive. Receive what’s outside of you, because that’s what is going to influence you to do what you do. It’s how life works. Everything outside of us induces us to do what we do. If we only focus on ourselves, that’s when we get into trouble. By receiving, you give all of the responsibility to the other scene partner, and it allows you to listen. And by listening, your body will do the rest. This completely changed acting for me. Once I grasped that all I had to do was receive my scene partner, the burden to preform was lifted from me. "The ability to receive may very well be the most important principal in acting that I can teach you."

Hey Brad , nice one but need more information on the last content on receiving the scene partner as my problem is mainly with self consciousness while acting especially which I do smile as I have crooked front teeth which makes me uncomfortable and also while doing romantic scenes. I can easily do intense scene and comedy but the above smiling makes me hard to do romantic scenes. Please help me with this. Thanks for your reply in advance.

Hi, I want to ask, and I know the answer is probably gonna take years of practicing acting but I'm curious. I mean I've started to practice acting with short scripts recently, did the digging, interpreting, did the breathing exercise thing, and noticed how I carry myself when I act, its different. Now I start to wonder..what if an actor is working on more than 1 film at a time, how do they juggle/manage their own psyche so they don't get mixed up 😂?
