"The Heller Approach" is an acting technique that gives actors a simple yet practical and solid foundation so that actors are ready and empowered with reliable and easily accessible tools to work in any medium. The technique and its application are based on muscle memory and not on past personal experiences.
The amazing technique is born from working actors and directors. It truly frees the artist to access feelings and thoughts that are universal to all humans, helping actors to create the most believable, entertaining characters in a way that is conducive to the fast-paced entertainment industry.
"The Heller Approach" is taught exclusively by Brad Heller, a working actor, director, and acting coach. Group classes are available every Wednesday night and Tuesday days in Los Angeles, California. Private lessons are also available via Skype, Zoom, or in person.
Professor Heller taught for 5 years at UCLA before opening his own acting studio in 1995. Heller's teachings are based on the works of his former teacher and mentor, Don Richardson, who was an original member of the Group Theater, which was the nucleus of Acting in the United States. Richardson's fellow students were Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen. Don was one of the Group Theatre students who said, "The Method is NOT what acting is about." He directed over 800 television shows in his time.
Don's acting technique became a rescue for Brad Heller because despite having a degree in theater from one of the world's finest theater programs, Boston University School of Theater Arts, and trying multiple acting techniques, Brad could not enjoy the process of acting. Combining Don Richardson's acting technique with the knowledge of anxiety from Dr. Eda Gorbis and lessons from his mentor Academy Award winner Seth Winston, and more, the Heller Approach has become trusted by thousands of students globally.

I hear the people around me say 'You're so funny, you should do comedy' and I had no idea how deep and complex comedy actually is. I've realised that up until this point I had just been relying on my own natural comedic timing i.e the pause before the punchline. I have learnt so much from this video about not just 'being funny' but knowing how and why scripts and characters are comedic. Thank you.

Brad, hi. Nice to meet you. You are such a huge blessing to me. You have no idea. I'm called to comedy. I practice my craft in everyday life. Everything and everyone is fair game and life is a blast. I joined a small comedic drama group 2 yrs ago, with zero experience. Within a short time am getting lead parts. Currently, I've begun writing and producing children's comedies. Can you believe that? I think, if you want something bad enough, or 'good' enough, you will find a way. You have. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with the world. You are leaving a legacy. God bless you.

Renee Clark Renee I'm not an actor, but my advice is to try to get known from where you are. Find out where to send your work. Maybe someone will catch it, and things will fall in place from there. And there's no way order to become an actor/actress. Sometimes it happens by accident.

dude u are freaking phenomenal...I never did any acting or wanted to I accidentally saw another video of yours which outlined not using sensory memory to evoke emotion rather we should listen and react and I learned how to cry on que instantly from that video SO as I listen to this I did an exercise...I decided to intently listen to these wonderful comedy tips BUT i created a character who was emotionally distraught about these tips... I hear you say tips like "lets find out who these characters are" and instantly I'm balling my eyes out saying "oh God now I have to find out who they are too Keller oh so they remind you of your neighbor.." and I'm genuinely evoking without trying .....I'm really tickled to just sob Like someone killed my goldfish without having to draw on anything expect for understanding the emotion necessary when reacting.....good tips on comedy as well

The way I see it, comedy is partly in the writing, and partly in the expectation of the audience. Michael Caine once said that the secret to good comedy was playing bizarre situations straight - and I think that's true to some extent - but then there are differences between what Americans find funny and the humour of Britons, and to some extent, Germans, Italians and the rest. You reference Cheers and the American version of The Office, but contrast that with shows like Dad's Army and Only Fools and Horses, both of which can raise a smile across the pond (I'm in London), I'm sure, but may not travel all that well.

Comedy has interesting psychological aspects that tweak my interest. I love symphonies of film because comedy does so well with them in particular. A score to a film that is farcical is a good way to really draw on expected pauses subconsciously. While you've said that a pause is a good initiation for a laugh, a score can use repeat tunes to build up an event as to when something is going to be funny. It's like getting neuro-linguistically programmed to know what's happening without even being aware as to why. It's also great when actors do that with their blocking too. My favorite part about timing in comedy is that since there are so many alterations to how you frame the punch, each time it happens it can be original and genuine. That's also what I love about remade movies... they're different processes of every single job involved with making the movie and up to date, but a different artistic approach to telling the same classical story as well.

These videos are extremely insightful but I do have a question regarding the breathing exercises - What about more complex scenes that move from one emotion to another? Let's say your character maybe starts off really happy but then something terrible happens and the character is either panicked, or another negative emotion from there. How do you practice that? Is there still one overall objective that you need to identify, or do you practice the breathing technique with as many emotions that you may need for that scene? Thanks, Dina
@thehellerapproach
@thehellerapproach 8 жыл бұрын
+komah3113 , Thank you for your kind words. That is a very good question and we want to ensure you that the exercise works for any type of scene or emotional state. Certain scenes will cause your emotion and objective to change. When that happens you can still prepare the scene how you normally would even if you jump from an emotion of joy to panic. The intensity will change, and you will want to make sure that you are more charged as the scene goes on. Also, when you are thinking of your objective, it is always the selfish needs of the character, it is always something he or she is trying to accomplish but not successful at. This gives your character something to work for through the entire scene.

In this video you suggested for those who are not able at this time to move to L.A. to attend some of your courses, to check about getting in touch with a teaching associate of yours elsewhere. Who might there be in Virginia and where are they located?

Do humans really have all those reactions to emotions? To all kinds of emotions? oO What are the breathing exorcises you're talking about? Oh, do you have a video about facial expressions? (I've found videos explains what body-language means what, so I don't look like the victim in the exorcist around people anymore, but I can't find anything on facial expressions. I've studied movies and people, but it'd be nice with a real guide.)
@thehellerapproach
@thehellerapproach 8 жыл бұрын
+Nathanael Alhazred, Thank you for your support to the channel! The best way to answer your question is that humans really do receive each other, and in that, the reactions and emotions are very honest, real, and natural. We don't have any video's about facial expressions, but that is not something to worry about. When you have learned the foundation of the technique, the rest will fall into place. You seem like you have a great personality! Have you thought about taking any acting lessons? It would be great to get you set up with training. For more information you can visit our website www.thehellerapproach.com and also fill out your information on the 'contact us' page. This way we can contact you directly. We look forward to hearing from you. Best Regards, Admissions

I also was born with about as much understanding of human emotions as Dexter. *Smiles wryly* Which is why acting is a very useful thing to learn, tho I've got no desire to be an actor. I doubt I can afford lessons right now, but I do find your videos to be very good and helpful. ^^
