What? You mean complicated near-decade long contracts worth 50 million dollars and complicated trade clauses aren't hammered out in 30 seconds with the first team that calls?!? This is why it's always struck me as odd when teams 'trade negotiating rights'... I mean, just negotiate, everyone else is anyway.
@BoboMcBooboy
@BoboMcBooboy 6 күн бұрын
Here's the thing... the second half of your comment makes VERY little sense imo... ESPECIALLY when you start off the first half, with such a sarcastic comment... Do you REALLY think the teams that are trading PURELY for the early rights to sign a player, that said teams aren't basically 99% sure before the execute said trade, that said player is willing to sign an extension with this new club, based around term/cap hits that were agreed upon prior to the deal going through... Knowing at WORST it's just some small details to iron out after the trade, like NMC/NTCs, bonuses, etc etc...
@BoboMcBooboy
@BoboMcBooboy 6 күн бұрын
Can you think of a single team that's traded for the early rights to negotiate with a player, where that player said "no thanks" to signing with said club?! I certainly can't. One of the benefits to having a team work out a sign and trade with another for example, (think jets trading Dubois to Kings) is the max term limit for a "resign" is 8 years, as a free agent its 7 years... You can "early negotiate" through a third party... But there's absolutely no reassurance that every other team isn't doing the same thing with the same player... If you have SOME idea they're interested in playing for your team, trading for the early negotiating rights shows this new team is HEAVILY committed to bringing you in. Shows they want you badly... Etc etc. it can be smart business to insure somebody from a different market doesn't offer the player 1.5 mil more at the final seconds, right when you think you've got everything agreed to once FA officially opens on July 1st...

The current CBA doesn’t make July 1 a hard date for tampering purposes. Per the CBA, “Day after the Entry Draft (but not later than June 25) until June 30, Unrestricted Free Agents may meet and interview with potential new clubs, but may not sign a new SPCs until the opening of RFA/UFA Signing Period.” So players and GMs ARE allowed to meet and discuss, even hammer out a solid deal. They just cant sign anything and file it with the NHL until July 1.

Sharks' prospect scrimmage was $25 this year. Edit: Most of the rest of camp was open to public for free and the scrimmage was broadcast on youtube for free as well. They started doing the public scrimmage about a decade ago, it was originally free, then when it got more popular it was free but there was a lottery for the tickets, then they expanded it from the practice facility to larger venues (first the normal arena with only the lower bowl open, now Tech CU Arena where the Cuda play.

Probably a hot take but I'm completely fine with tampering fading into nothingness, especially if it's even just communication between gms and agents. Tampering is a holdover from when teams basically owned players and as we moved into the existence of free agency, owners still wanting more control over players entering it. It's a lot easier to convince a guy to just resign for you if he literally can't talk to anyone else until he's officially unemployed. Wasn't a big deal for superstars since there was zero doubt they would score a contract, but roster guys who might not get a job elsewhere if they don't know there's interest, huge deal. It allows players to make an informed decision and decide if they're being properly valued by their team and if they could bring more money home for their family at the end of the day.

Here's the solution for free agency: have the players' contracts end officially before July 1st (say, day after Stanley Cup final ends), therefore there is a window where teams can negotiate with players before July 1st. Or just continue how it is where the league allows contact with upcoming UFAs so long as a GM doesn't publicly announce that they are going after a certain player when free agency opens.

As to what I think should be done: "Tampering" certainly does make things much more difficult for the team holding the existing contract (or makes it unfair, if you prefer), assuming that they want to retain that player. But realistically, how is the League supposed to prevent any and all indirect contact between rival GMs and a player? You would need to chart out everyone's personal and professional connections in a way that makes a Steve Dangle trade tree look like simple geometry, and you'd need to monitor everyone's private communications like the NSA. It can only work by gentlemen's agreement, and we all know how NHL GMs are anything but perfect gentlemen toward each other. Even if you could get such an agreement in place with everyone sincere about following it, it's only going to last as long as the next Burke/Lowe-style dust-up.

Turns out he was an agent and he thought they were Melvin Fernstrom's friends/family and was trying to get in with them as a roundabout way to get in with Fernstrom. The UFA tampering issue can be solved easily. Once free agency is open, there’s instantly a 72 hour moratorium on contract signing for UFAs. However, players during this period are available for interviews and negotiations and all other forms of contact. We still get an exciting day of $1B+ being signed in a single day on the day that the moratorium is lifted, but also allows the negotiations to actually start, legally. Now the 72 hours was just an arbitrary number I threw out for explanation’s sake. However early GMs are typically contacting players is how long the moratorium should be.

A lot of those "proxies" are players, who are out there trying to recruit friends or former teammates, most likely after their GM used them as a reference in determining whether the free agent might be a good fit on their team. Concerning proxy tampering, I waiting for the first team to do a feint one year when they have many UFAs on their team to be re-signed. Don't be one of the everybody "doing it" that year, and call foul when someone proxy contacts one of their players. Sort of like a front office diving call to pull penalty draft picks from other teams.

Players should be able to talk to teams so teams can know if they're in or out on a player... dumb rule anyway.

Either the rule should be totally abolished or then upheld totally. Claiming all 32 teams did it might be true, but in the case if some didn't, they were in an unfair situation. And one would think some teams had better proxies than others.

There is no way to stop it. When you are talking about $1 billion dollars, it is going to happen someway. If it is the no tampering rule getting enforced, it will happen some other way.

Teams should already be talking to 2025 UFAs then because tampering through a 3rd party isn't punishable and they'd drive prices up for those who are about to sign extensions early.

If you're not affiliated with the team, asking an agent "Hey, I heard the Preds are offering Stamkos 8x4, any truth to that?" is a great way of telling him the Preds would be willing to go 8x4.

I think tampering is difficult to prove or enforce. It's dumb to have a rule that you can't enforce. I think if they want to give the team with their rights some advantage, they should just come up with other incentives (ie, similar to the 8 year deal for an RFA) and let teams talk to whoever they want.

That is, THAT'S TAMPERING YOU IDIOTS. YOU SENT SOMEONE, EVEN IF HE'S NOT PART OF THE TEAM, THAT, IS, TAMPERING. The actual gall, it's like people doing rent using a computer program saying they didn't make rent go up, it's the computer program. No collusion here! Jesus fucking christ. I love watching hockey, or I did but like, I can't enjoy it anymore it seems.

Ya don’t say? Players make a decision between multiple teams and agree on a contract within the first half hour?
@Yo_Adrienne
@Yo_Adrienne 6 күн бұрын
It's not necessarily "multiple" teams. Just because a lot of teams are interested in a player, it doesn't mean the player wants to go there. Chances are, they've already narrowed it down to one or two without ever talking to any of them.

If everyone's cheating, no one is. Tampering is hard to enforce as it is and teams will always find loopholes in the rules. If everyone knows this is happening but no one cares, I don't see an issue.

Sounds like Nick Saban in 2008 while coaching the Dolphins was asked if he was talking to colleges about HC positions. He said " no, I have not talked any schools" Translation, my agent is talking to them so I can I get out of coaching this shit Dolphin team.

There's no rule that the NHL won't turn the other way to if it's broken. Doesn't matter if it's on the ice or in the front office.
