for anyone actually taking the ccna. the majority of the questions focus on knowing: subnetting by heart, everything about switchports, wireless, ipv6, and misc troubleshooting a variety of things. the questions also change to focus on what you are weakest at. so if you do bad on subnetting, like me, you will receive many more subnetting questions. the test is not hard itself but cisco exams are mostly trick questions which feels scummy for a knowledge test. feels like they made the wording as difficult as possible to boost their prestige . you will fail questions over grammar and word choice.

This helped me memorize which commands to use: - Privileged Exec mode: etherchannel (show etherchannel) - Global Configuration: port-channel - Interface Configuration: channel-group/channel-protocol If I'm not mistake, you can only use one type of command at each level.

just a note on the Boson Quiz question but 'channel-group 1 mode on' is a valid command as long as both switches are using the 'on' mode. the reason answer B is correct is because you cant mix the LACP and PAGP protocols on an Etherchannel, they must be the same on both switches.

Very clear and concise course you have here, I'm enjoying it very much. However a couple of things to mention here. 1. Talking about load balancing in this context - while common - a bit misleading. LACP does not take into account the load on the other legs of the aggregated link, it just determines the appropriate leg to use based on the 3 named methods. EtherChannel contains no actual load balancing algorithm either. Strictly speaking link aggregation is load _distribution_, not balancing. 2. Aggregating 4 links does not strictly speaking create a single link with 4 times the bandwidth either. Again, the traffic isn't balanced, just distributed across the available links based on the named rules but without considering the existing link load. The max traffic speed between any 2 devices over an EtherChannel link = the speed of a single physical link involved in the EtherChannel. In real-life network you may well have a 4-leg EtherChannel and notice 80% utilization on 3 legs but only 5% in the fourth. Actual load balancing requires intelligent devices that constantly monitor the traffic, and re-direct it over different links in case of congestion. Just wanted to bring this up, as I've lost count how many times I've had to explain it to less-than-happy network admins. Other than that, absolutely fantastic series :-)

@@JeremysITLab Yeah I had no doubt - just considered it worthwhile to clarifying this to the people who follow the course. Explaining this to an irate budding NetAdmin who's not happy when the traffic over his server's LACP link is unbalanced loses its appeal after the 11th time or so :-) Funny enough Cisco agrees; the second sentence in that page says "...allows load SHARING of traffic...". That's the only time, tho' - after that it's about "balancing". My best guess is that that the marketing ppl butted in. "Load sharing" and "load balancing" are two very different concepts, but one of them sounds better on the brochures...

Hi Jeremy, I read the answer explanation of the Boson Ex-Sim bonus question, it stated that if I configured two static Etherchannel ports on both switches with the CLI command "mode on" , the link will be established but without an aggregation protocol. Now my question is: is data going to be transferred in both directions if no aggregation protocol is configured?

In regards to the EtherChannel flow calculations, I am assuming the more input data you provide the protocol with the more efficient its switching decision will be? This must come with more CPU overhead of course. However, is there usually an agreed upon method that applies generally to networks? Or is the decision done on a case by case basis depending on the network design/architecture? Say for example would the sweet spot generally be for most networks to not include too much input data(SMAC + DMAC, SIP + DIP, combinations of both etc) but also not leave it so scarce to the point where the protocol makes a less efficient switching decision than it could have if it was provided with additional input data? In short, is there a specific combination of load balancing options which apply generally that A) Make sure the switching decision process is as efficient as possible for most networks B) Not use too much processing power and C) Make sure you are not getting diminishing returns in terms of efficiency(The balance between CPU overhead and load balancing between the logical links). May be a tough one to answer and I may be off the mark here or missing some information but I couldn't stop thinking about it while watching this video haha. But it would be great if you could answer it or possibly provide me with some resources to follow up on. Thanks.

Great video as usual. It would be good to see some more on troubleshooting Etherchannel. Such as how to fix this error: %EC-5-CANNOT_BUNDLE2: F0/21 is not compatible with Po1 and will be suspended (vlan mask is different). It is not making sense because all the trunks and port channel were configured to allow the same VLANs.

Hey Jeremy I have two questions. 1) Some people say it's better first to shutdown the interfaces and then configure the EtherChannel to avoid any possible misconfigurations with the other switch. Do you agree? It is recommended to do it like this or it's totally fine if I don't shut them down? 2) Can you explain please what is bandwidth, throughput and speed. How are differentiate one from another?

Hi Stefanos, 1) Shutting them down does no harm, so go for it! I personally haven't run into problems by not shutting them down, though. Whichever you prefer! 2) Often they're used interchangeably (I probably do so at various points in the course), but try a google search like 'speed bandwidth throughput' and you'll find some explanations better than I can give here! There is smthng I've seen. I think when you use the command 'channel-protocol ?' and you choose the protocol you prefer, (ie; LACP or PAgP); the options should be minimised when you issue 'channel-group 1 mode ?'.

Hey Jeremy! Dump question here, so if layer 3 LAGs are a good option to avoid broadcast traffic loops etc, then why would we even consider using layer 2 ether channels? Besides, isn’t broadcast traffic necessary at all on a layer 3 LAG? What about ARP o any other broadcast 😅so how Vlans travel from access switches using Layer 2 etherchannel through agregation switches using layer 3 ether channels where broadcast traffic is not allowed ?

At 4:58 or so, you say that layer 2 loops are made if all interfaces are forwarding. That is because any broadcast frame coming from ASW1 and out of a interface on DSW1 will be sent back through the 3 other open interfaces back to ASW1, right? And, of course also the other way around, i just need to make sure i understand it correctly.

At 4:54 why all lights are in green color towards DSW1 side. This is also a switch, therefore only one green light should be there and all other three in orange color as per the STP

DSW1's interfaces are all designated ports, ASW1's orange ports are non-designated ports.

5:22 we could have made vlans including some ports between the two switches using access ports right? That would just balance the load in between. Is it wrong?

Hi all, can someone explain me why with routed ports (multilayer switches) there isn't the problem with broadcast storm? I understood no BDPU frames are sent between switches for STP, but hot is this related to to broadcast storm problem? Thanks in advance

Hi, At layer 3 in ip header we have a field called TTL, every time an ip packet reaches a hop TTL is decreased by 1, and when TTL is 0 packet is discarded, hence ip broadcast storm or ip add flapping isn't a thing

Hi Jeremy, I'm curious on the loading balancing conf. I understand that ethchannel can load balance either the source or dest, or both of them. Why did Cisco use 'XOR'? As I understand XOR is exclusive OR, which means you either have this or that, but you can't have both.

Hi Byron, I hadn't thought about that so I did a Google search, here's a nice explanation: 'The etherchannel load balance is some sort of a binary xor computation. This means that the result of the xor computation selects the output link to use, it is not round robin. As an simple example, if the xor looks at the very last bit in the source and destination mac address and found this. last bit of source is 0 + last bit of dest is 0 then xor gives 0. If sou is 0 + dest is 1 xor gives 1, if sou is 1 + dest is 0 xor gives 1, if sou is 1 + dest is 1 xor gives 0. Then taking the above and put streams with xor 0 to port 1, and streams that gives xor 1 to port 2. This means that in theory, Your two streams kan be put on the same port.' Basically, the XOR gives a 0 if a bit in the source address matches the same bit in the destination address (0-0 or 1-1), and gives a 1 if a bit in the source address doesn't match the same bit in the destination address (1-0 or 0-1). I assume it compares all of the bits of the source and destination address, and the resulting series of 0s and 1s is used to assign the data stream to a certain physical port.

24:00 making a trunk was just said as fact lol. Is that because it's between two switches so you also have to truncate it? I thought setting up the ether channel replaced that. Or are we assuming multiple vlans?

Connections between switches are (almost) always trunks, so it's safe to assume.
