I've been going back and forth if I should get chickens or quail. I think having the compost pile in the coop made up my mind. Chickens it is. Thank you for all the info.

Nice videos! My compost area has usually been the entire enclosed run area, works really well. Their roosts which they jump/ fly up into is right above part of the compost, so they poop directly into the compost when in their roost. Just like Karl Hammer my chickens are fed Restaurant/Kitchen scraps. ( I do use some chicken feed as a backup ). I take my Gator Cart with either buckets or a Rubbermaid onto the city bus to collect the restaurant scraps. I have a few video if your interested.

Wondering how this panned out as time passed. I am in the suburbs and don't have the part of the yard I would do the compost in lined with hardware cloth- the chickens can access it but so could rats. Have you had any issues with rats being attracted to your chicken compost station?
@spoolsandbobbins3 ай бұрын
Our compost system is outside and it does attract rats but we turn it often to disturb them…

I just finished building our first chicken coop/ run for our girls that we rescued. I have been looking for a a way to incorporate my composting with the chickens. I am excited to try this out!
@NaturesAlwaysRight6 жыл бұрын
Sweet Kevin! That's exciting you are getting chickencs! Ya I think deep mulch combined with this is one of the easiest ways to make amazing compost since the chickens do most of the work. Then if you ever want to build the soil faster, you can make a traditional pile outside of the coop. Just rake out some of the material from the deep mulch for use as the brown carbon material. The chickens have already made the carbon pieces smaller, some has converted to soil and will be great microbe innoculant for the pile, and there will be fresh manure to help get the pile hotter. Have fun out there!

How do you like that little feeder you have hanging in the coup? What do you have in it, since you feed thru the pvc pipe system?
@trishagregory77364 жыл бұрын
I'm interested to know if you have a mice/rat problem with open scraps like that. When I had chickens last year we had to do everything possible to secure the feed and only give them enough scraps that they'd eat on the day, but I'd love to do your idea. Just not sure if it would attract the vermin though . Great video :)

Could you make a video about composting and bolkashi fermenting?
@NaturesAlwaysRight6 жыл бұрын
Yes will be doing both. Just shot day 9 of a compost pile. Like usual the video will show the entire process so it will come out in 5 weeks or so. Bokashi video still needs to be shot.

@NaturesAlwaysRight6 жыл бұрын
No problem man. Yes I would love to do that.
@Seriouslydave2 жыл бұрын
Thanks this seemed like a successful failure to me, pointless doing the compost just dump all the green waste in a lid and let them eat it, but better yet bukashi first, (keeping the pickle leachate) chickens second then compost(bury) their bedding.
@CavemanTravels6 жыл бұрын
how old did you get the chickens?
@NaturesAlwaysRight6 жыл бұрын
4 months old. I prefer getting them at this age. The time and money saved taking care of chicks is worth it for a few extra $ up front.
