Even before watching the video, I wish to make a comment, having heard you say you have been grappling with darktable. I started that process in 2019 when I finally had enough of Adobe's machinations. The move from lightroom to darktable was hard work and very slow (because my learning ability is logorithmically inversely proportional to my age), By the end of 2022 I felt I finally understood enough to be dangerous. This was absolutely only because of the range of informative tutorial videos available on darktable. It would have been even better if there had been videos reflecting your style and pace of video production, so I urge you to ascend the darktable learning curve as quickly as you can and then bless us all with insightful videos in your inimical style. I look forward to it, especially if you can cover highlight reconstruction in filmic, diffuse & sharpen, spot colour matching and (over the next 5 years or so!) combinations of inclusive and exclusive masking. Nothing too exhausting, then ..... Oh, and by the way, I am REALLY glad I made the transition to dt; I find it to be a dauntingly powerful, difficult to learn, product

Hi, Great KZbin pointing out advantages of Raw Therapee. I'm working on a workflow for making large prints, the Lancos algorithm makes great enlargements. DarkTable videos would be great; is there an advantage to using it over other image processing apps? Cheers

Lanczos is always the best upsizing - you seen my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp7CcpRnrrdqfZo ?? As for DT advantages it's too early to tell, but the ability to add multiple instances of the same module and have multiple methods of module masking is what's making me pursue using it for starters.

Thanks Andy for the files and the ideas, Linux user here :) DT Tutorials would be really GREAT! Your RT tutorials have helped a lot, but in RT I have always had problems with fotos taken by difficult light conditions (multiple light sources)... p.s. in the color toning module, that thin bar below the curves and to the left of the save symbol (disk) is empty in your RT. Not so important, but just saying...

Wonderful instructor Andy. I'm new to RAW. Just took my 1st photos this week. I've downloaded Dartable, Raw Therapy and ART to see which one works best for my needs. I've tried some Jpg edits on all 3 and did about as well in Photoshop. So I think these really will shine in the RAW format. I'm anxious to see what you can do.

Cheers 🍻 For what it's worth, if I was new and in your shoes, I'd go with DarkTable and accept the steep learning curve. It's not perfect by any means, but it's more versatile than the other two, because of the 'module instances' and masking facilities.

@@AndyAstbury Thank you Andy. I started with it but it seemed overwhelming. Thats why I thought the others seemed easier as I'm also trying to learn and teach a cousin who won't really have time till she retired and is no longer the primary caretaker of her mother. We did that for 12 years, so we know what that entails. I did mention to her that I liked your teaching style of nit going super fast, but slow and easy, but more importantly explaining what the modules do and why this particular one maybe better then another fir this situation. That is very helpful. I just finished a wedding with a brand new Sony RX10 M4 and there were about 25 shots I took that cane out too dark. The last RawTherapee you did explained in great detail how to lighten the shadows w/o blowing out the highlights w/o masking. I think I will use that to complete that project, but keep watching and learning Darktable as both of us are more landscape and bird photographers. Besides, I like your voice. You sound like another acquaintance I have from Down Under. I don't know where really know where he lives. But he calls himself the flying Dad. We are Microsoft Flight Simulators and he mostly flies Australia and New Zealand in his videos. He makes me laugh as he has a beautiful Avatar woman in the plane with him. She moves, but dies not talk. He calls her Jude. As he flies he talks and makes up stories about why she us not speaking to him today. She always gives him the cold shoulder. Anyway, he is a great flight instructor, very methodical going over everything step by step. I appreciate your getting back to me Andy as I watched your Darktable episode last night on masking and wondered which method I should be learning as I went to bed. This is a very helpful. Thank you so much. It means a lot to me. I'm retired and am looking forward to what the future has in store. Kittster

DarkTable isn't as over-whelming as it first appears...it's only since the latest version release that I've had it on my system. RT is a great bit of software, but some things (like the Tawny Owl) are very hard to do, but very easy in DT. I'm a Forza guy myself, but I could fancy Flight Sim if it wasn't so damn expensive! Landscapes and birds - same as me. Ping me one of those dark Sony shots on DropBox or WeTranfer - tuition@wildlifeinpixels.net - and I'll have a look at some process ideas for you.

Andy, thanks for all the work that you do. I've been using Darktable for a few years but just, a few days ago, starting trying Rawtherapee. I have some Canon 5D M ll raw files (.cr2) and have downloaded the Adobe DCP profiles for the camera. When I go into the Color Management panel and change the input profile to "Canon EOS 5D Mark II Camera Neutral.dcp, the DCP section in the Color Management, DCP section is grayed out, thus not allowing me to select Look Table and such. Thank you

Mmm, that's not right Fred. My first suggestion would be to totally uninstal RT then reinstall it, preferably one of the latest dev builds for your system - though I've not seen the error you describe in the public release. But try it anyway, and let me know if it works or not. Bare in mind I'll be out of the country from 13th to 20th, so I might be a bit slow in replying.

For Windows users who would like to explore Darktable without the hassle of installing it there is a portable version available on portableapps. I found it extremely slow to react though, when functions (i .e. sharpening) are activated or sliders are pulled. I was curious but after the first tests I am not (yet) ready to switch away from Raw Therapee, thank you... 😁

Andy, thanks so much for this video and the downloadable resources! I followed along on your picture but my colors look WAY off. My guess is it has to do with White Balance. Could you share your settings in that panel? Mine are Method: Camera, Size: 8, Temperature: 5809, Tint: 1.013, Blue/Red equalizer: 1.000. I created a MyBase profile exactly as you described in the "WATCH THIS FIRST" video (including the exposure setting you mentioned we need to uncheck in your description). Is there something else it could be? Do I need to calibrate my monitor? I'm running macOS.
@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury 11 ай бұрын
White Balance for me is always set to Camera = also may sure your Preprocess WB (under demosaicing etc tab) is set to camera too. You ask "do you need to calibrate your monitor'...too damn right you do, otherwise your colours and luminosities will not reflect the file data correctly.

These (same I believe?) profiles are bundled with the free Adobe DNG converter for Windows. So if a Linux user can "borrow" a Windows machine long enough to temporarily install (and uninstall, if desired) the DNG converter, they can be harvested from its installation folder tree. In darktable, the lens correction module does have a camera and lens database but I'm not sure if you can load DCP files through it. Hmmm... I'm using ART mostly now so I've lagged a bit on darktable. Great video, by the way.

A quick look at my install of DNG Converter (Version 13.3) shows no profiles in the installation tree (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe DNG Converter) - just an .exe and 4 .dlls. What have I not understood ? The DNG Profile Editor does not require installation and so does not have an instlaation tree.

@@AndyAstbury Thanks for the video!! I also couldn't find the profiles for my Pentax K-50 or KP, and had to look in the Adobe Standard folder. This leads to my question - I don't really get the difference between those two, and, the difference between Raw Therapee's Auto-matched camera profile and the Adobe, for example (hm. maybe I should check if RawTherapee even has those Pentax ones installed...) Any insight into the differences would be great, even if, they're basically the same but made by different people / methods so will have slight variation.. will help. Thanks!!

Hello, I've been looking for a proper dcp for Sony A7 and A6000 when I came across your dropbox materials. They're wonderful! and they even implement look table and curves. Can you comment on how the DCP files were generated? I've generated my own dcp and the colors aren't as rich nor quite as accurate as yours. One more thing: I've noticed that once an image is color managed, if I don't want the color saturation to shift as I build contrast, using the Luminosity curves function preserves the colors nicely. If I use "Film-Like" or "Standard" curves the colors shift (for obvious reasons).
@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury 6 ай бұрын
Hi Christopher, all the dcp files are 'lifted' directly from Adobe Lr/ACR. If you are on PC or Mac, you can get them yourself by installing a trial of Lr or Ps, but obviously, the Linux folk lose out there, hence I shared them! If you make a contrast curve adjustment in an RGB colour model tool, you will change the colours because of the pixel value structure. If you do the same but in an L*ab colour model tool, then the colours will not change if you just use the L* channel.
@ChristopherPerezPhotographer
@ChristopherPerezPhotographer 6 ай бұрын
@@AndyAstbury - Got it. Thank you. I just opened one of the files in the text editor and confirmed the source, too. I have to say, they really are very nice. I appreciate your comments on curves, as well. I've taken to using a preferred dcp in RawTherapee, making sure the look table, curve, and all that are selected under Color Management, then using the Exposure slider to get the overall luminosity where I want it, then use the L* channel to tweak the contrast. It seems to work the charm. One last question: Does it matter when Color Management is applied? I can't see any difference if I do this before adjusting the exposure or after. The reason I ask is that it's pretty important when applying film simulations. Those are only 8-bit (if memory serves) and I experience color shift if I'm not precise as to the step the sim is applied at. Again, thank you and keep up the great work.
@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury 6 ай бұрын
Cheers. In reply to your question, I'd advise "before" as it really does help you see what you are working with. Sometimes, if you work the other way, you may have to return to a previous adjustment and tweak/alter/remove it - I know, I've done it!
@ChristopherPerezPhotographer
@ChristopherPerezPhotographer 6 ай бұрын
@@AndyAstbury - Thanks. I measured the colors against a standard chart and see there's a very slight shift, even processing the L* channel. Running Color Management a second time after processing seems to do the trick. The first to get me into a good starting place and the second to clean up any color shift artifacts. This is really good stuff. Keep up the great work!!!

How to translate between iPad model numbers used in your Dropbox file/folder naming and the model name/number used by Apple - for example iPad Air 2 or MLNVP2B/A or A1567 ?. Similarly for iPhone: how do I tell if I have 8.1, 8.2 or 8.4?

Frankly - not a bloody clue! Just use which one looks best - check histogram for clipping indictions in shadows and highlights. I know with the iphone, the variants are IOS version related - if you have an iphone 8 on IOS version 8.2, then use that dcp. Edit: take no notice of that last bit - pure speculation on my part!!

@@AndyAstbury Interesting - told me much I never knew when I used that version. The article also implies how dangerously insecure it is now - nobody should be using it, assuming they still have access to such an old version. On the question of the model number: for iPhone 8 I believe there are just two options (8 and 8 Plus), which will have different DCPs because they have different main cameras. I don't think the DCPs in your DropBox reflect this.
