I have been using the software for several years now but in the last year or so I have been having some issues. When i look at my photos in the preview bar they look sharp and exposed properly. When i double click an image to edit it some sort of preset is applied and destroys fine detail and exposure levels. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Always a fun day to come across a new AA video on tha TUBE! One thing to reiterate for viewers, not to cause any confusion, I’m running 5.8 on a M1 Mac Mini at home currently. Everything has been stable for the week I’ve had the machine thus far. Your comment about running the Dev build of 5.9 on INTEL was clearly stated certainly. Just wanted to let folks know that RT does indeed work just fine from my minimal observations on M1 machines…current as of the 5.8 version. Secondly, the one difference I have noticed on my new machine is when I export to photoshop, it doesn’t open camera raw initially anymore. I like the crop tool as well as the calibration panel for quick color adjustments. I figure I don’t have a box checked in photoshop to bring it up currently? Can anyone else say that their machine behaves in this way? Thanks as always, Andy.

Good to know it works Ian, though if your output from RT to Ps is a 16bit TIFF then it shouldn't open in ACR anyway - or have I misunderstood something...

Hey Andy, Thanks so much for these! So far I've watched the one for setting up Mybase profile, the one about the three methods of lightening an image, and this one. Crazy how powerful a program (and free!) Raw Therapee is. I have a question about color spaces if you have a sec. If I'm pretty much exclusively planning on sharing my photos on the web only, should I work in ProPhoto and then convert to SRGB later, or start in SRGB from the beginning? The web doesn't seem to have a conclusive opinion on it. My thinking is that if I'm sure I'm never going to print anything then it makes sense to start in SRGB, and have that be my working color space. I'd love to hear your thoughts though! Thanks, Adam
@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury Жыл бұрын
Hi Adam. Your raw file contains either 12 or, more likely these days, 14 bits of data per channel, in a colour space far larger than sRGB. The idea of raw processing is that you expand all that data to obtain a full tone image that's pleasing to the eye. Raw data is also in a gamma of 1, usually called linear, and so needs to be converted into a gamma of 2.2 to match that of the human eye. In order to do all this, it's best to keep hold of as much captured data as possible, hence raw processors usually work in linear prophoto, allowing you to maximize the data ranges of light and colour, using ten of thousands of data points per channel. sRGB (best suited to 8 bit jpegs) only allows for 256 data points per channel - so it makes sense to do this huge scale-down conversion AT THE END of the process rather than the beginning.

Every time I edit the exposure/color of a photo in RawTherapee and then close it, the next image in my file browser automatically has the same edits applied. How do I turn that off??? I can't find an answer anywhere!

Hello Andy, Thanks a lot for this new video. As others wrote, It is highly anticipated. What about *using GIMP* with the TIFF (16 - 32 bit) exported from RawTherapee 5.9? In the past, you wrote you were not satisfied with GIMP but I don't remember your reasons related to not using these TIFF 16 -32 bits files for the final retouching 🙂 At present, the GIMP developers have released the 2.10.32 version which should work fine on Apple Silicon machines. On top of this, the high bit support should be improved with many bugs fixed as well. As regards some future videos it would be great if you could cover some additional new feature of RawTherapee 5.9. For instance, white balance (algorithm: Iterative Temperature Correlation), new spot removal and so on :-)
@AndyAstbury

There are too many things I can do in Ps that I can't do in GIMP Rossa, plus useful plugins like Lumenzia and Topaz have no GIMP support. So from my own personal POV, GIMP is fairly pointless - unless you are trying to save money. If that is the case, then the savings will carry a versatility penalty.

Hi Andy, me again (diving guy!). I'm considering taking a white card/grey card or something down with me, mostly for pool shots to try and get better colour accuracy. The orange sodium lighting, blue tile walls and loss of red under water can be a pain to correct for, especially when there are no pure colours in the shot. Is there a specific colour you'd recommend I use? Considering just attaching/painting something on the tips of one of my fins so I can take follow up picks to match previous ones to.
@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury Жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, I'd try a small sheet of opaque white or medium grey acrylic - it'll do the job and get less soggy than a grey card! I'm really hoping you've bought a light though........
@gamernick1533
@gamernick1533 Жыл бұрын
@@AndyAstbury I usually just have to live with the light that's there. If I'm trying to do an actual portrait shot or something, I'll take a light along but as they're usually training, having bright lights shone in their eyes isn't helpful for them! ;) Just have to make do. Will look for something I can use in acrylic though and try that out! I'm occasionally lucky in that someone will have something very close in colour to what I want on them and my own regulators have a brilliant opaque white but I don't use them any more as they're too valuable to use in normal pool sessions!

Hello Andy I have a question. In 5.8 Ive been using walvet levels-residual image to dodge and burn. It was very effective in my opinion. I could lift highligts, or darken shadows. As an expert could you check it this in 5.9 becouse i totaly dont understand how it works now haha. For me its kinda broken :)
@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury 10 ай бұрын
Not a process I'm familiar with I'm afraid - that's a job I personally would allocate to Photoshop. We can use the shadows/highlights controls within Residual image, but it's really more of a tone remapping than real dodge and burn - which is a selective localised process.

@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury 11 ай бұрын
Hi Mike, there is a way, and it's not too difficult. 1. Put your card in a card reader, plug it in to your computer, and open RT. 2. In the Folders navigation in File Browser, go to Volumes and you will see your camera card. 3. Double Click that folder and navigate to your images - they will now show as thumbnails in the main window. 4. Select all those you want to ingest, then right click and select File Operations> Move to... 5. In the dialogue box that follows, navigate to your desired drive, click the icon to make a new folder/sub folder, then click Okay. 6. Give RT a minute or two to move the files, then you'll see the new folder in the directory tree on the left. Double click said folder and Hey Presto - importing with RT.

@@AndyAstbury thanks i have played with DT a little but l like RT better. DT seems to be way more difficult for me. I hope if i convert CR3 to DNG, i can then use it in Rawtherapee and have the camera profile working. Thanks for your response, i enjoy your detailed tutorials.
@AndyAstbury
@AndyAstbury Жыл бұрын
Convert to DNG and everything will work as expected - guranteed! How are your ging to do the conversion? I would recomend the free Adobe DNG converter if you don't have Lightroom but ARE on PC or Mac. Raw Therapee is built around DCRAW, which was a big mistake in my opinion. Darktable is built around LIBRAW, which is far more active. DCRAW does not undertand quite how to handle the .CR3 container, whereas LIBRAW can handle it fully. I know what you mean about DT seeming more difficult, as I find it just the same 0 but it's worth having it on your machine and learning it gradually, as it's far more flexible than RT in a lot of cases.
@muskateer10
@muskateer10 Жыл бұрын
@@AndyAstbury Yes I used the Adobe DNG converter. **Note I just found RawTherapee 5.9-235 development build. It appears to solve the problem with reading the Canon .CR3 Meta Data and now reads the lens profile information. (3/27/2023 actually released 2 days ago it looks like). They are implementing Meta Data in exiv2, the way it looks.

I wouldn't call this video a true _Beginners Guide_ since it includes a lot of advanced steps without any explanation. In my opinion a 'Beginners Guide' should not start with pointing to two videos that you already made in which you used advanced language and expect a certain knowledge about the program. Don't get me wrong Andy: It's *not* a bad video. I would more say you describe a workflow to a user who already knows how to do basic things with it (this opens up the question what 'Beginner' you had in mind). So I would say your video is not for someone who wants to get their toes wet (the complete Newbee with zero knowledge), but who already stands in the water with their feet and wants to go in a bit further.

@@AndyAstbury I want to make sure that my comment is meant as constructive criticism and not as dull bashing. I thought about adding this to my initial comment but left it out because of it's length (so I may add this here): I'm not sure if you really make videos for beginners at all. Maybe your target even shouldn't be to make videos for beginners at all. The beginner usually wants to have a 5 min video that explains the basics in a short timeframe and get's them going quite fast - the regular viewer of your channel knows that your videos aren't like that. They usually are like 30 minutes or longer and usually explain a concept or a workflow in a more detailed manner. What I mean with "Maybe your target even shouldn't be to make videos for beginners at all." is not that couldn't do it. You are a professional Photographer and we can learn many things from you that just don't fit in 5 minutes. You can teach the nuances of photo development that the average user does not even know about simply because you had to learn them in order to survive in your profession. Again: I don't say that you wouldn't be able to teach us the very basics. I would rather say that a university professor is may not well placed in Kindergarden for teaching. In my opinion your very strength is your huge knowledge base that you acquired over many years (probably several decades) and that you can lay out a more complex workflow in a video and explain them rather well. You explain the difference and what you do to reach your target. So I don't say that you couldn't make a good beginners video, but that your strength is in my opinion somewhere else.

Hi I'm the one who wants to get their toes wet, I have no knowledge at all about RT or LR or Ps! But I find Andy's videos absolutely useful, because he doesn't talk about numbers and hard concepts to understand, but, it seems to me, about colour, light and tones and how they intereact in a more visual way which is the way at least I understand things best, moreover I love that his videos take the needed time to deep the concepts. Althoug I'd like to have any advice about what read or watch to deep the topics. I'd also like to know how to understand when you go too far with a tool, how to stay within the limits of good development, but I think the only way for this is experience. It's true that before I start watching Andy's videos I had watched simple video about RT to understand how it works at a basic level, but this at least for me is obvious. So thank you Andy for sharing your videos and thank you for your way to explain hard concepts in a easy way.
