Hey Joel, great video! Thank you for guiding me through DAT Bootcamp and beyond. I’m an incoming D1 and was interested in applying for the National Health Service Corp Scholarship Program but there isn’t much information or shared experiences about the application process or how it works after graduating. Would you consider making a video about it? Thanks!

The Health Professional Scholarship Program is excellent & I loved my time in the Navy... how many people can say they practiced Dentistry in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan lol.. seriously though, overall it was awesome. To add on though Navy also seats just around 70 candidates a year for the HPSP... There are other optional scholarships such as HSCP (Health Service Collegiate Program), among others, for all branches.. which aren't as good.

Thank you so much for this information, I really want to be a Dentist or even specialize. I’m a third year college student(Fall 2021) with a GPA of 3.1. In addition, I’m in a relationship with someone who is going to be in the Navy so I wanted to learn about the Navy and see if I could achieve an HPSP, stay in my current relationship and complete my career. i would appreciate any help and word of advice :)

So basically you have to serve 4 years after becoming a dentist to pay back the scholarship that you received

Also not that this would be a deciding factor, but he did not mention the signing bonus that is given for accepting the scholarship. This could be because I believe that the airforce does not give a signing bonus, I know one of the branches does not, but I cannot remember which one for sure. That being said, I have applied for the Army scholarship, and if accepted I will receive a $20,000 signing bonus, pre-tax unfortunately. Something to consider.

I received a 3 year scholarship, but was offered a $20k bonus if I agreed to serve an additional year. If anyone faces this, I do not recommend taking the money. At the end of your three years, you will be eligible for a retention bonus that will be worth $35k a year. And if you decide you want out after three years, you will make way more your first year in civilian practice than what the military pays plus that $20k. And no, I didn't take the $20k

I’m very interested on how much the stipend is along with the scholarship and can do you have to go through boot camp.?
@jmey
@jmey 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know the exact amount tbh of the stipend, but it's designed to help you cover your living expenses and is definitely significant. And you do have to go through boot camp (you're an officer first, dentist second)
@CAB12152
@CAB12152 3 жыл бұрын
Ive just been accepted to dental school and I applied to the HPSP, the stipend is $2,400 a month before tax so it comes out to about $2,150 a month. Also, no you do not have to go through the traditional boot camp that you're probably imagining that other people entering the military. You do have to do officer training, which is much less intense, much more classroom and leadership based rather than the harsh physical requirements of traditional bootcamp.

@@jmey Thank you :) I always wondered if the only way specialty was worth the time is through the scholarship because more dental tuition debt has no pros over full tuition cover.

Free? I'm in the middle of my military payback and I would never consider it to be free. It's part of the overall compensation. There are some major aspects of the military that absolutely suck and you may be very far far behind your classmates in terms of clinical skills by the time you finish your payback term.
