I didn't go into the production you showed, but I just took some stalks and stuck them in the wet ground and most of the leafing parts did not even welt but kept on growing. I don't want to do too much to propagate as I don't have the time. I took the stalks from wild plants already growing on the back of my land. Thanks for the video and the sowing lesson. It was great.

I do large ones all the time with greater success than really thin ones. I never cut the nodes off

Same. Elderberry roots easily without the extra steps. Just put them in soil with at least one node covered.

Great info... i have 10 cuttings coming in the mail. I will try your method. Do you think they would root in the pro mix as well as your mix? Just curious why you make a different mix than you uppot into.

Hey. Thank you for reaching out. I find the original cloning mixture promotes better root growth than a straight soil mix. Less opportunity for bacteria growth as well.

I ordered elderberry cuttings and the company said to soak in water. It has been almost 3 months and still nothing :( If I decide to waste anymore money, I am going to have to try this way.

My first time doing elderberry cuttings. If you have done fig cuttings, are elderberries more successful? Also it looks like elderberry young roots are not as finicky as young fig roots. I'm 7b in Delaware. 2 elderberries in the ground and want to increase that. In ground have swollen nodes but no leaves yet. Hope it's not too late to take cuttings. Great informative video. Thank you.

Hi Amy, We are 4b/5a here so a much different climate and I always take my cuttings around Christmas. So temps below 32F. That being said, I do not think you are too late, but I would start now!! LOL I have never done Fig cuttings due to our zone, but I can say that Elderberries have been very easy and forgiving. Good luck and please let me know how it goes !! Mike

Will the up potted cuttings be under lights at the house or just sunny window? Thanks again.

Missed this question in my last reply! I put them under lights because it is so dark here in the winter. I believe a south-facing window would work, but lights set at 12-hour cycles is what I do. Thanks again Mike

What would happen if I tried to take cuttings in the middle of summer?
@HagonjonesHomestead
@HagonjonesHomestead Жыл бұрын
Honestly not quite sure. They might need to be dormant, but it’s worth a shot. If you do, I would remove the bulk of the leaves. So the plant puts effort into growing roots and not into growing leaves. Leave a couple leaves, but cut the tips leaves off. 25%. I’ve done this with other clones and it seems to work. Let me know how it goes !!

Do you suffer transplant shock? I've lost many using this method or filling up a tray like this

Hi Jose I can’t fully remember if any died after transplanting. But I’d guess that’s a good sign because I would fully remember it a bunch died. Worst case maybe 1 or 2 died after transplant.

@@HagonjonesHomesteadGreat video. This is my issue with elder - I did a video last year, basically my preferred option was to simply push the cuttings into the soil outside in their final growing spot while still dormant, during winter, and just let them gradually root at their own rate. That does work and lessens the shock rather than planting fully rooted cuttings outside in spring as things get very hot here very quickly and they don't have time to really develop their root system in situ. Even so, they suffer and often fail just because of the hot climate and I'm definitely going to try your method this year as at least I know I am planting live starts, they just might take more maintenance to begin with (i e. watering). I would acclimatise and plant them out as soon as major frost danger has passed, elder can take a little bit of frost anyway in my experience, it will even leaf out while winter is still in full swing.
