thanks for all the info, a friend of mine gave me a craftsman generator with the same engine as yours, he also gave me the carb but didn't know how to adjusted. I'm going to try this myself. What an awesome explanation of the reps and hertz. God bless you and thank you.

Just found your channel. Have same generator which just went through engine. I did fail to note or photo the governor spring setting, but you were kind enough to show a lighted close up of just what I needed.

I have older like this. 10 hp. tecumseh. Your tips on adjusting the hertz up made a big difference. Spring was in proper position . Thank you very much. Have a great day.

Thanks! I bought this same generator cheap, but it has a governor problem. Now I can try to make it right

Right before you said it, I was thinkin', if he's waiting to get that to 60 ALL DAY, that's how long he'll be there. That's a sweet "new" generator. Kudos

I have a very similar generator that I got from a neighbor also. It has sat for who knows how long, and I’m replacing the carb so this video will help once I get to the point of dialing it in.

When I finish rebuild these I set the Hertz at 62-63 hertz so when you put the load on and it naturally drops its about the proper hertz of about 60

i just got me a used Coleman Powermate 3500 with a very bad surging condition when in "idle control" mode. Normal (idle control off) mode seemed to work fine, although engine ran a bit fast (putting out 135 volts from outlet). Many KZbin vids say surging is due to the carburetor that's dirty inside and not delivering fuel consistently, but it wasn't the problem that caused surging in my case. After cleaning the shit out of the carburetor with Gumout carb cleaner and other means (cleaning jets with wire, etc), it turned out my issue was a small electric solenoid/actuator that needed adjusting via loosening/retightening the adjustment nuts on its' small metal bracket. This actuator is located right on top of the carburetor in my case and its' function is to basically limit the RPM to 2000 via the carburetor when idle control is turned on at the front panel (Eco mode to save gas, polar bears and baby seals up north, no doubt). A simple 30 second fix that cost me almost a day to figure out. Coleman instructions were useless in the so-called "manual", by the way. It said to "adjust the solenoid/magnet to correct idle control that won't latch" (whatever that means!), but no picture or description of the actual adjustment mechanism/procedure was provided. I guess only small engine repair techs buy Coleman, huh?

When adjusting the governor nut on the spring arm, do this. Adjust it under a load, say 15 amps worth. Get it to 60 Hz and it will come in about 122 volts. When you take the load of completely, you will get a slightly higher volt reading around 130 and Hz will be about 63 Hz or so. Don't be concerned at all with those numbers, when there is no electrical load on it. Be concerned of the right numbers when it's under load. Hope that helps someone.

When you first crank the engine it was surging, how did you correct the surging?

Good stuff, did you test under load to see if the mechanical regulator kept it linear enough? I have seen it before where underload the mechanical regulator will result in higher and lower speed (and corresponding voltage output), just because of the hysteresis of the mechanical system.

Nice to know just picked up 3 like gen sets w/small gas tanks however. Problem is they all run fine for a while, then shut down. You pull start them again, same thing. Run a while then shut down. Do you think it could be the coil over heating in all 3, causing this?? What are the odds?? Please advise. By the way just found you today. 5/16/2021 Good luck and waiting to here from you.👍✌

I put new carb on And all it wants to do is over rev. The govnner should close it but it's not. I've adjusted the linkage by bending it random ways.

Would of been nice if you showed adjustments or at least explained what you did to get rid of that surging also what hole you put the governor rod in. THANKS FOR NOTHING!!!!
@thefirstmissinglink6 жыл бұрын
Rob Smith the surging was probably due to the thing being set below the operating range of the governor.
@bradmetcalf53334 жыл бұрын
Exact problem that brought me here. I won't say "thanks for nothing" because it helped me understand the governor but yeah, an explanation of the surge correction would have been nice.
