I think you're one of if not the only maker that really discusses belt speed and when to adjust and why. Man, I'm glad I found your channel, again, thanks for the attention to detail, good stuff :)

Hand grinding frightens me to death, I have tried it a few times and messed up badly each time. Mainly because I cant grind left handed, so I realy like your method of turning the knife over and staying with the right hand. Maybe no the purist way but if it works, why not? Thank you fpor taking the time to show how you do these grinds. Regards Andy Jersey UK

Great vid! Tons of useful tips, I have a real issue with getting that belly portion of the edge way too thin just like you mentioned by the time I get my bevels where I want them. I think i'm paranoid of overshooting my bevels so I put too much pressure towards my edge at the start and before I know it...paper thin edge 🙃

Awesome. Concerning the plunge...a video on how you fix an uneven one would be cool...i sometimes get one that is nice at the bottom but further up its not all in one straight line...ways around it to fix but just fixing it all freehand is a challenge..always...thx keep up the great work

Are you using a file guide while grinding?
@stahlhart8998
@stahlhart8998 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. But at some point u have to remove it, right ?! For the finer belts or after heat treating...or do u keep it on till itsvdone no matter what grit? Thx

New to channe, (glad i found you) and knife making, so my struggle doing my bevels is using my Grizzly G1015 with a front mod attachment. So this is a single phase motor no VFD, so it's so easy to burn edge. Do you have any suggestions to help with this struggle?
@gentrycustomknives8008
@gentrycustomknives8008 4 ай бұрын
That is very challenging! My only recommendation is use fresh belts and light pressure to keep the heat down but too much speed on the finer grit belts gets tricky

Thank you for your tips.... your videos have been helping my knife making (Ironbark Knives) ........ I have a question, with the edge up, as you get to the belly or curve, are you pulling the tang towards you or lowering the tang to follow the curve of the belly?
@gentrycustomknives8008
@gentrycustomknives8008 3 жыл бұрын
I’d say more lowering to follow the belly . Very hard to explain though lol! Thank you for watching and I’m glad they help out a little!!
@leostraker3494
@leostraker3494 3 жыл бұрын
i find that pulling it towards me gets the best results...but either way, just be careful not to grind the tip off. you can actually leave a little tab of material if you are doing an ultra-thin kitchen knife and that way if you get a little too ambitious it wont hurt the knife. just grind the tab off when you are done

Just curious, would it not be better to use a metal bandsaw setup like the portable bandsaw on a Swag Table? Aren't belts expensive and wouldn't it be better to take off a much metal as possible beforehand. I would think bandsaw blades would last longer and be less expensive in the long run. I don't know, so I'm asking.

If possible, can you help me figure out why im getting scratches above my bevels? Ive tried everything and just keep getting slight scrathes above my grind line. Thanks man.
@gentrycustomknives8008
@gentrycustomknives8008 6 ай бұрын
That is definitely tough! The thinner the blade stock and higher the bevel makes this more common.
@jusme8060
@jusme8060 6 ай бұрын
@gentrycustomknives8008 I suppose it is thinner stock then usual. Thanks so much. I guess I'll try a jig with the thinner stock. Appreciate your help man, truly 🙏

You don't use the left hand when grinding? So you basically grind the bottom? Isn't that slightly more dangerous? Can't wrap my head around it honestly :) good job though
