This doesn't surprise me at all. Most physical contact between two women is seen as non-sexual, but physical contact between a man and a woman or between two men is seen as sexual. So a woman with a hug sign is kind of seen like "hi friend!" in a silly way to other women. To men that are attracted to her, they might enjoy the physical contact with her in a mildly sexual/romantic way but she's not a threat to them. The man with a hug sign is seen with suspicion by women because if he chose to be, he is physically a threat (ex: "is this guy going to molest me or does he have some sexual motive for doing this?"). There is still a stigma about male homosexuality and men don't want to do anything that will make them seem "homo" like hugging another man. They might also have the same suspicions as women "is he going to molest me, could he do something bad to me?" Even knowing this, and even being much taller and bigger than most women (so not in much danger usually), I still end up with the same thoughts: "that's cute/fun" for women vs "is this some weird sexual thing?" for men.

I think people tend to hesitate hugging men because they are usually stronger. If the guy had bad intentions and was just luring people with the "hug" deal, things would go grim for you. If you broaden your view, you are trying to make an argument about a majority that you really can't make. There is no basis for that statistic except for personal experience, which is biased. If I'm wrong about that and there is an actual, reliable, unbiased statistic than please send it to me, because I would find it fascinating. If not, all you've done is dance around and make a scene, produce biased false statements, and make a fool of yourself.

This is for all the guys that are complaining about double standard. Before you say that I'm some feminist, I'd like to inform you that I am NOT a feminist. It's kind of a shame that many men don't feel comfortable hugging other males (unfamiliar or not). They always seem to think it's an offense to their masculinity to be affectionate with a male. Women are generally more open to contact with other women but guys aren't the same towards guys. For a girl to hug a strange male it's not uncommon for the girl to determine if he's likely a sexual threat or not before approaching, which is sad in itself. But guys look at a guy asking for a hug and is just plain "NO."

I think that gender does matter in these kind if situations. Generally people feel more comfortable hugging a female because that is okay, but if it is a guy and another guy hugs him then the fear of being labeled as gay comes into play or simply they do not want hugs from a male.

I think that the appearance wouldnt make much difference because she went from pretty and preppy to pretty and sort of that cute nerd look. I think gender plays a bigger role because stereotypically males are the more physical beings whereas women are more emotional so they think "oh this girl wants a hug, wants to fell better or put a smile on my face" whereas with him they will think, as a girl, "Oh why does he want a free hug, is it just to hug girls, will he keep his hands above the waist, etc..." and guys would generally tend not to hug another guy he doesnt know whereas girls will other girls because they feel more safe with it and will show emotion more, even if its just in a few second hug
