Our Starlink has worked throughout winter with several feet of snow. The only issue is if we forget to preheat the dish when snow is coming.

I’ve had both. Satellite for 20 years, so much better than cable. Live near Augusta, GA my satellite both internet and tv, both came back as soon as power restored. Loved ones who have regular internet & streaming still don’t have either after 2 weeks. Give me satellite any day.

It will likely be free and here's why: If Amazon becomes your service provider, then everything you do online becomes market research data for them. Alexa already listens to everything you say, but it doesn't fully understand what you type unless you are accessing the Amazon site or getting served affiliate links through your search engine. With an Amazon ISP, all of your online activity becomes available for data mining. You'll be served ads and search suggestions piping hot. I know one thing for sure...that is one terms and conditions agreement I will read from start to finish before I sign up for that ISP.

I am out of town, and my Internet options are very limited. DSL satellite or cellular. The DSL is presently at six megs, I’ve use satellite and hated the lag time in it and the price. If Amazon offers a better price and better speed without lag time yes I would take advantage of it. I am also an Amazon prime member.

I don’t have Prime membership and haven’t had it since I no longer qualify for the cheap (college) Student Prime. Internet would have to be pretty awesome to spend the extra $ for Prime. Right now I pay $95 for internet/wifi and my options are $10 less for less or $10 more for the same speed/reliability. No real choices to switch yet

A very important component of providing residential internet is the support structure for when the connectivity is down. I would like to understand how Amazon plans to handle problems when they incur before signing up. Would they be selling a dish to go outside outside the house to connect to the residential router which might also need to be purchased?

Amazon getting into the Home Internet business given the cost of putting all of those satellites into orbit would cause the price of Amazon Prime to increase substantially. Not only would I not use Amazon Home Internet, I’d probably drop my no longer affordable Amazon Prime subscription.

Everything you do online is already being tracked, and I mean everything. IPhone, android, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and any apps that you use, all spy on you. A.I. is going to be the worst when it comes to spying. IMHO.

Amazon internet can become a privacy nightmare. Like other providers can know your network if you use their router. Amazon can know every move you make online and with Alexa. Its chilling to think about it.

People’s privacy is already gone thru their phones. When I get a new phone I spend hours doing a deep dive into the phone to turn everything off and deleting what I don’t need or use. I’m sure they are still getting me on what I leave on to use. Most people just turn their phones on and use them.

Actually, I'm OK with that. I don't visit websites I'm ashamed of, nor am I part of some online conspiracy group or militia. If they want to see all the sports and movie websites I visit or know my political leanings, so what?

@@johnurban7333 Yes and there are many different attack surfaces. From ISP to phone, apps, browsers, some VPN services and becoming number one, automobiles. You can turn everything off and your iPhone can still track you. Google isn’t any better of course. I have a GrapheneOS phone along with other things to keep my privacy .

Before everyone jumps in, remember, Prime Video used to be "free" without ads if you had Prime. Then Amazon figured they'd take that away. I can easily see Amazon giving away free Internet to Prime members for awhile, but then turning around and deciding maybe it won't be so free anymore.

Only problem for me and potentially many others with Amazon's attempt at internet is that satellite internet has much higher ping than terrestrial internet. If you're a gamer you're high ping would be a nightmare for online gaming.

I pay $30 a month for cable 100MPS internet which is more than we need for streaming and internet. We also have prime but looking at what Starlink costs and even if Amazon internet was half that, I don't think we would be saving any money. Also my cable company has different tiers at lower prices. I also believe then you will need a small dish etc.

I have Amazon prime for buying stuff as for their Streaming service, I think I’ve use it maybe twice in the past year. Definitely can get away without it. Wish they’d have plans with lower price for those who don’t use it. I don’t want there internet either..

After going through Hurricane’s Irma, Ian, Helene & Milton I would consider AMZ if I wouldn’t loose connection during/after a major weather event. We used to have Direct TV, problem with it was we lost service during a dark cloud event. Meaning it looked like it was going to rain but didn’t. So when it’s raining we lost service. Hard to use my robot vacuume to clean up after storms when there is no internet. Was looking at a robot window washer but if I can’t use it after a storm due to no net…it’s a large expensive paperweight.

Survived Helene and Milton we have power back but no Internet or cable. We have a jet pack so we can stream and a retro antenna. Big mess to clean up! Feel for the NC people that never expected a hurricane .

I doubt it would be cheap. Amazon Prime wants an extra $3/month just to have no ads on Prime Video when it used to be standard to not have ads. I suspect it'll be just a bit cheaper than Starlink.

It's going to take awhile for Amazon to offer this feature. Their satellites service, Project Kuiper, still doesn't have satellites up yet (maybe a couple, but nothing like Starlink).

Currently I pay $90 for internet including WiFi, $20 for my phone which uses mostly WiFi and is tied to my internet provider. If I drop the internet service my monthly phone bill increases to at minimum $70 (services claiming $45 or less are per line with 4 lines or $180/month. It’s just me, I don’t have 3 other people, so $70 for 1 line). So my monthly cost for both internet and phone combined is $110 inclusive. If Amazon can beat that price, where I’m paying less than $110 per month for BOTH, then I’m interested. If they offer internet for say $40/month and my phone is $70 (inclusive of taxes&fees) then I’m not going to be interested in also paying $150/year for Prime. I only recently bought a year of Prime. I have not had Prime since it was priced at $79/year (for adult and not a reduced price) a decade or more ago.

They will inject adds like they do with full retail priced alexa screens and fire tv’s. Actually went to prime music the other day for the first time in ages and they hobbled prime music to try and push people to prime music unlimited. Prime video too. Starting to really question my thought process in buying alexas and fire tv sets. Sucks for me but it was not bad at all when i bought in

I would consider Amazon internet if the prices were competitive and the speeds were reliable. I know when I had a DirecTV satellite dish, weather could affect reception. Would the same be true of satellite internet? Losing internet during severe weather would be bad for where I live (tornados). As far as AI shopping for me -- almost certainly not. Maybe to help with research but not with what actually gets bought.

I received Apple TV free with the purchase of an iPad. Kept it longer than the free trial but the price continued to increase and when it reached 9.99 I canceled. There is decent content but with so many options it wasn’t worth 9.99 to me.

Sure, I'd consider free or discounted Internet with Amazon Prime. Why not. It probably won't be for everybody and I doubt it'd be perfect. The optical cable's already in the ground in many places, and they'd probably only offer in those communities, maybe a 300 Mbps service for light streaming at a very moderate increase in the Prime subscription. I do not think I'm ready for AI to purchase through Prime. I don't subscribe to much, because prices are changing wildly these days and you just have to keep up with it.

One problem with Amazon is, they can and do blackball people and they have no recourse or appeal process. They just ignore you. That isn't good customer service. Do you want to trust your Internet to a service that treats loyal customers so poorly?
