In the first year of my mechanics apprenticeship i was taking a the head of a series 2 jag and dropped a 5/16 bolt down the hole in the block/sump that the oil return or dipstick went into. I had to go out and buy myself a thin magnet. I stuck it down the hole and got it out on the first try. The head of the bolt just cleared the side of the hole and no more. The chance of it going down the hole was 1 in a 100. I got lucky that day. there have been times since that i haven't been that lucky and had to take things apart to insert something that didn't get put in. Here's another story. One of my work mates had bad habit of playing tricks on us . I had a transmission in pieces and had the little vitone balls that go into the valve body in the lid of a jar. He added one more and thought it was a great joke as i had to look in a manual to see where the balls went because i thought i'd only taken out 3. . He was putting a motor together a week later and had left the envelopes with the piston rings and wrist pin clips on his bench so i added an extra clip to the envelope after he had put the pistons and rods back in the motor. Then he tidied up before he put the head and sump on and found the clip in the envelope and pulled the pistons out again to check them cursing all the way. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Another Sunday, and another great Mustie1 video. I was raised on 60's and 70's Cub Cadets and have always been biased towards them (at least the IH models). This JD machine seems very well made. Looking forward to learning more about them as you go through this one.
@robertheinkel62255 жыл бұрын
I was a Cub Cadet repairman from 80 to 84. Those older Cubs were built tough, and the Kohler engines were bulletproof. I loved working on them. I fixed a few JD models and despised their design. It was like they over complicated everything. Fun fact, the rear ends in the Cub Cadets were the same ones used in the Cub Low Boys.
@paulg4442 жыл бұрын
I have a Cub Cadet 169 as well as a John Deere 212 and a 316/Onan, comparable machines and I love them all but the wheel base of the John Deere 200 and 300 series are longer and that makes a difference. Also the JD 200 series and 300 series have 1in front spindles and a more substantial frame. I love them all and enjoy each one for different tasks but for me the bang for the buck in the JD200 series stands out. And the JD200 has that shock mounted engine cradle. Nothing quite like it.

I had one of those tractors for years and was doing exactly as you predicted. I was telling you where the wheel release, and hour meter were. I couldn't wait to see you change the oil because of that silly oil valve. My dad worked at a machine shop and milled up a stainless steel bar with a T notch cut into it that we used to open and close the valve. Well done with the retrieval. My first automotive one was nothing like this. Many, many years ago, just after I'd learnt to drive, I found there was a wooden lolly stick (popsicle stick to USAnians) rattling deep in the windscreen demister nozzle. Only way you could see it was via the screen and access was dire. Ended up putting a loop on the end of a length of wire, loading it with glue and, after several tries, managed to fiddle it down and onto the stick. Came out first try.

The valve seats will loosen over time as the engine heats and cools causing the caps on the valve stems to fall off, you will have to peen around the seats to fix the problem,then hand lap the valves,this is a common problem with the onan engines, on some higher hour engines you have to do this process every few years. Most people don't know this.

He used a long piece of thin flat steel, then after he got it into place he used an old speaker magnet, applied it to the end of the steel piece and removed the broken part. Worked like a charm allowing the steel to be placed exactly where he needed it w/o sticking to the engine block of other cast parts as your seemed to do.

Good find on the valve lash cap! This thing is going to purr when you get it back together.

Mustie1, I appreciate the fact that you went to such extremes with this project because "the last video on the John Deere 318 did quite well"... not because you wanted to refurbish this and sell it. As a professional, I am well aware of the value of one's time and this would likely never be a profitable endeavor on the basis of selling this tractor. I feel well served, being one of your subscribers. Thanks for all you do. Also... I was quite excited when you retrieved the lash cap from the engine!

Barn at the end is just like mine. I love how you're always saying " you're going the wrong way " from planes, trains and automobiles. One of my favorite movies

Dear Mustie, Merrimack Urology Associates would like to officially offer you a job as our newest kidney stone specialist. This video will serve as your CV and application. You will have access to our flexible ureteroscopes and nitinol stone baskets. Yes, they are typically used for those pesky lower pole calyx stones, but retrieving valve caps can be your subspecialty. With admiration and respect, Matt Cohen and Dave Shi

would that be on an OUTPATIENT BASIS or would M1 be the traveling stone/garden tractor specialist?

Think a health insurance co. will accept "John Deere" as a name on their policy to help get the procedure covered?

I was all curled up in agonizing anxiety “will it fall deeper into the abyss?” Similar stress inducing footage that Alex Honnold gave me in Free Solo!! Super series - love it!😁👍

Thanks for the opportunity to see how various brands are constructed and the differences between them. This video shows a higher end JD and little details like the weight of the “tin” as you lifted it as an indicator of quality.

I moved my phone around to get a better look when you were fishing, yeah that didn't work out for me at all. Very satisfying when it finally rolled out on the table.

Sure are married to it now! I had a missing bolt when I took my onan engine (very similar to yours) apart to replace the carb and change the oil. I found out where the bolt went when I started it up... I thought I forgot to add oil, but the oil was there. All the sudden i heard a pop while it was running and it cleared up and sounded great again. Pulled the head, and the head and piston were all beat up and had bolt thread impressions all over. Found a random piece of a bolt in the cylinder and I think the rest of it lives in the muffler now. I made the call to just send it. Seems like it's doing fine..? Time will tell. Thanks for having us in the shop, have a great week mustie and everyone

I like how we start out complaining about the inaccessible bolts on the exhaust bracket, next thing we know, dropping the oil pan. That escalated quickly.

Best laugh I’ve had in a long time! 😄 Been there. Tenacity was your friend. Edit: Of course it was at your expense. This makes part of why your channel has plenty of subscribers. Thanks.

"Remember where this goes......." your interaction with the camera (viewers) cracks me up every time. Another "quick fix" turning into a project, but gonna be well worth it in the end. Great job man, keep up the awesome vids!
