I started back as a kid and learned from half heartedly learning from a Mark Wilson complete course in magic and didn’t try too hard. I think I learned the French Drop and a Back Coin Clip production, and that was it. As an adult I started learning from Alex Pandrea, Chris Ramsey, Doug Conn, and a slew of KZbin tutorials. I eventually found Magic-TV and I was steered to penguin, alakazam, and vanishing inc. I spent over a year just learning on KZbin before even spending a dime.

Funny. When I was a kid, myself and my friends in magic, took up magic as a hobby because it was cheap. I deck of cards, some rope, coins, and a library card was all we needed.

The Magic Bunny forum has a free magazine called 'Top Hat' which has loads of stuff in it. It also has a thread called 'Legitimately Free Material' which is worth a read.

I have been someone who has gotten a lot of magic on a budget. A lot of companies have free magic tricks. Murphy's also give 5 free tricks away when you sign up for their newsletter. Penguin's free section has 146 free tricks (link is in the left hand column, right above the Penny Arcade). Some of the old magic books are in the public domain. There is always options if you want to learn, just NO pirated material.

I spent more money on magic as a novice 20 years ago than I have with more experience since. Learning curve. You kind of get an idea how things work and if it fits your style. With KZbin you have so much access now

Unfortunately, at least here in San Antonio, Texas, magic books are in short supply at libraries. I’ve been to some smaller ones that have very few, no important works, and the actual main library downtown had close to none. I found one there and it wasn’t good. Very sad. I left quite disheartened. I’m very glad that a lot of books that are very highly regarded are in the public domain. Very nice.

I totally agree with this. I was a broke college kid when I started and I remember an appearing straw being a big purchase and getting ripped off on ebay. But its not like it broke my show. I made everything I used. I now have the ability to make or improve effects I like. You tube is so much more rich now too. You just gotta dig aroumd

A side benefit to learning the older magic 1st is not many perform it, so many times it fools even magicians. If you want the new cutting edge tricks, gotta pay the creator. Simple as that

If you have a deck of cards, One coin, sharpie/pen you can do an infinite amount of magic with slight of hand alone. You can learn it all for free on youtube. That's what I did as a broke teenager.

I did the library thing, we all did back then. I remember a Pat Page in my local. I love packet tricks, they can as low as a tenner. It's as cheap as any hobby. Whoever he is, he's a bit of a k**b!
