The engine cover on these is there for looks and judging by all the foam underneath, it's there to stop noise. It also seems to trap a lot of dust under it on the engine. Do not wash engine, use light air pressure and nozzle to blow off. You don't have to cut the snorkel top, you can carefully heat the area and stretch the plastic up adding 1/4" vertical opening.

I run no thermostat in the summer on my 2011 overland with the hemi. Runs nice and cool and it improved the throttle response slightly.

I'm glad it helped! I'm still driving around without the rear mufflers 4 years later lol. I put them back on for awhile but it was just too quiet. I took them off to repaint them and just can't bring myself to put them back on. It's funny because when I made this video I was disappointed that removing the rear mufflers didn't make enough difference but once I put them back on and off again I realized just how much that subtle difference matters. One day I'll get a real exhaust on there.

The big resonator is actually the muffler and those mufflers you pulled off are actually resonators... swapped the resonators on my srt8 charger with flow master copycats (thrush welded) and barely made any sound difference until I had the mid muffler removed and had pipes welded in place that was when I could hear as well as feel the improvement. Also a suggestion if you could find a srt 6.1 intake tube and box that would help the 5.7 breath a lot better not sure how much modification would be needed but it's something to look into
@guntherferguson2369

No matter what you call them there are too many mufflers/resonators in my opinion. The SRT intake is a good Idea. I was concentrating on free mods for this video but that would be a good cheap mod for sure. I definitely need another project.

I think you're on the right track. The rubber flap on my GC was glued crooked between right and center clip restricting even more air and I got rid of that 4" piece of foam rubber in front of the snorkel(no water gets anywhere near there even in a downpour). and you can now hear the engine more. I've been thinking about a CAI for my Hemi GC but the more I study up on it the more I realize Mopar engineers have optimized the airflow for the engines no matter how goofy they look. You are not going to get any real power improvements on a stock engine. K&N stuff for this engine/chassic is not well engineered and any power comes from the high flow filters, problem is, these filters don't filter nearly as well as a Wix or OEM filter so you are shortening the life of your engine. I have also seen dyno sheets from aFe for their $476 Momentum GT, They show improvements in the midrange(2800 to 4000 rpm) but nothing much on the top end and a small spike of maybe 5 hp at redline. I am heading to the bone yard to get a lower air box and snorkel, maybe 2. I will be cutting off the silencers and using heat, epoxy and the extra plastic to optimize the snorkel and airbox.

If you remove the rubber gasket under the hood (as he did in the beginning) to let more air into the snorkel, won't water during rain storms and from other cars in the rain cause water to get into the snorkel as well? That's not good just to make the engine sound meatier.
@guntherferguson2369
@guntherferguson2369 5 жыл бұрын
No it's not a problem. The snorkel goes into the bottom of the air box. The filter is all the way at the top. If there is enough water to fill that up to the filters level you have bigger problems to worry about.

I know this video is old but I’m looking at a 2012 JGC overland V8 Hemi. Would you recommend or anything I should look out for? It has 126K on it.

I've really liked mine but it's definitely not perfect. Common problems are broken exhaust manifold bolts, water pump, ticking lifters, and the TIPM (fusebox.) I've personally had all of those problems except the lifters. For me they are easy fixes so not too big of a deal. With an Overland you have air suspension as well. I'm not sure if that has any problems or not since I don't have it on mine. As long as you're at least a moderate mechanic and have some decent tools, especially a good code scanner, I would say go for it. It's one of the easiest engine bays you'll ever work in. But if you have to take it to a mechanic for everything it might not be a good idea. I know a lot of the electrical gremlins were solved with the 2014 and newer models. Plus you get an 8 speed transmission with 2014 up. But no matter what year you get make sure you change your oil religiously.

@@snoozinatthetop I still have the Jeep in this video. It has 101,627 miles on it and I haven't had anything major go wrong. Just the little things I mentioned but they were cheap to fix because I did it myself. I still love it after all these years. I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon but if I did it would be with a newer one with an 8 speed. That transmission is awesome. My girlfriend has a 2014 Durango which is mechanically the same except without a TIPM and it has an 8 speed. She has 132,00 miles on hers also with nothing major. It needed a water pump at 60K and that's about it. The radiator and the transmission cooler leak a little but that's because the lady who had it before her liked to run into things. Neither the Jeep or Durango have ever left us stranded. But with used cars you never know. Just take a lot of time looking at the Jeep. Chrisfix has some great videos on KZbin about checking out used cars before you buy them. I would definitely recommend his channel to anyone who works on the own cars.

@@snoozinatthetop Oh, I also had to fix the radio. On the Mygig radio's (the one with the 5" screen) it's relatively common for the hard drive to fail. The Overland will have that radio for sure. It's way easy to fix if it fails but costs about $120 for a quality disk drive. I made a video on how to do it but have yet to edit and post. I work two jobs and my woman takes the rest of my time so I never get to it. .

Got any idea what the 4 inch piece of foam rubber is for that's in front of the snorkel(goes from where the windshield washer fill @ 45 degree angle). What exactly does this do other than restrict air to the snorkel? Thanks.
@guntherferguson2369
@guntherferguson2369 4 жыл бұрын
I think they meant for it to be a seal but water can't really get in there. And any small amount of water that does will just go out the drains at the bottom. it's really just an unnecessary restriction. In fact the Durango with the same engine and air box doesn't even have that piece. Making it even more obvious to me that's it's just a waste of rubber and glue and should be removed so that you can get mor e air.
@guntherferguson2369
@guntherferguson2369 4 жыл бұрын
That's all it does is restrict air. I think they meant for it to keep water out but there is no way enough water is getting in there to cause problems unless you're submerged in water. If you are submerged that seal isn't going to save you lol.

that seal stops water from getting sucked into the breather.
@guntherferguson2369
@guntherferguson2369 5 жыл бұрын
There is more than enough space between the air filter and the bottom of the air box. You would pretty much have to be submerged for water to get in there. That seal is just a restriction.

Good mods except I dont understand the spare tire one. Reversing the tire actually hides extra space instead of add to it right? Simply get rid of the foam thing.
@guntherferguson2369
@guntherferguson2369 5 жыл бұрын
I did that first but then the spare is wobbly. I chose to remove the foam and flip it because it gives a couple extra inches clearance on top to fit my tool set on top..

I see what happened Guenther. You have the space saver spare and I have full size spare. That is why you have a doughnut and you can take it out; no doughnut for me. On reversing the spare- it is well worth it also because you can check tire pressure with the spare reversed. My tire only had 20 psi when I checked it.
