My 06 5.7 ran great to just under 200K miles, then some guy rear ended me and it was totalled. It was actually quite reliable. I believe it’s because I switched to full synthetic oil early on, never missed an oil change, made sure sparkplugs were always good, and installed the SRT radiator. Never overheated.

From the sounds of it, Chrysler did a good job renovating the hemi. I'd honestly take a tick over a dropped valve seat (most likely because of the mds and/or overheating). Both expensive jobs yes, but youre basically not at a complete loss if a roller fails (as far as I can tell). I did enjoy this in depth video. :)

I agree with you, I had the dropped valve seat and motor was toast. At least with the lifters and cam you can be back on the road within a week instead of needing a complete rebuild or dropping in a new motor. Thanks for watching :)

You're a dummy if you think a roller isn't gonna cause wear in the cam (which means metal being shaved off your CAM and getting into your oil meaning getting everywhere inside your engine) and it not being a total loss if your smart. There's a reason why mechanics worth their own salt and sweat say get a new engine instead of doing "just the lifters", your cams already been shaved down

Great content as usual. Hope you can do one exactly like this for the Pentastar V6. I have a V6 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and was initially bummed knowing I missed out on the 2016 changes/upgrades (with the exception of engine start/stop). Wondering if those upgrades affect long term life of the Pentastar. For the 1st time since I started driving, I have a vehicle that I'm still in love with, even after 7 years. Yes it devours gas with my lead foot, but that's offset by not having car payments (which I definitely appreciate given the current economic climate). I plan on keeping this vehicle for a few more years so I'd like to know that it will hold up ( just hit 80,000 miles). I'm in the minority, but I'm not in love with the new model like everyone else is. Since waiting another decade for a new model isn't an option, I'll probably go with a newer, used WK2, hence the curiosity of the upgraded Pentastar's differences.
@georgewalker99782 жыл бұрын
The exhaust manifold bolts break usually near the rear of the manifold because of the design of the manifold. All the cylinders exhaust collects to the rear exit chamber causing that portion of the manifold to expand much more than the the front cylinders. The needle bearings in the lifters fail because of low oil volume being produced at idle . The best solution for that problem is a high volume oil pump in the pre eagle engines. However in the later model VVT engines because of the lengthened crank snout those oil pumps will not fit . There is currently no manufacturer making high volume oil pumps for those engines. Although a K&N high volume oil filter is available bringing a higher volume of oil to the lifters at idle. Switching the exhaust manifolds to a header and increasing the oil flow makes these engines much more reliable engine.

I can’t speak for them all simply because when they fail the heads are trashed so I’ve never had them milled but I just did a head gasket job on a dodge 3.6 which are known for vale seats and when the heads were on the mill you could tell the aluminum was super soft it came off in long string pieces like when ur drilling through soft metal and so much so the pieces we’re scratching the head surface. @MarspeedCars2 жыл бұрын
Simple question without a simple answer unfortunately! That one I’ve heard that it can be tough to detect. So it won’t throw the code every time, what you describe can also be symptoms. It’s tough because it’s a gradual thing as it wears down and taps over time, and eventually it gets to the point of replacement but you don’t always get textbook symptoms. Anything power loss would signal something major to me though especially when combined with the other things you said

@joer50572 жыл бұрын
Yes, and yes. The 'tick', as mentioned in the video, is a result of the roller slapping the cam instead of rolling across the surface of the cam lobe. As this progresses, it is literally wearing the surface of both the lobe and the roller on the lifter which will result in the valve not opening as far as it should. This will cause power loss on that cylinder (as a side note, more than one lifter of the 16 can certainly develop this issue at once) and eventually lead to power loss as there is not a proper air/fuel mixture entering the chamber. Once the computer detects the cylinder imbalance, it will show a code and the dash light will come on. It can happen quickly, and it could seem fine for a long time. It all depends on how "stuck" the roller is, but any indication is a sign of a downward slope towards a costly repair.
@joer50572 жыл бұрын
@@Nick_Gir rule of thumb, most all automatic equipped hemi's have MDS, except for the 6.1 SRT engines, and the heavy duty truck engines. Manual transmission equipped vehicles did not get MDS. Hey man sorry I can’t get back to many comments but was scrolling through and saw this now! I would say they are fairly reliable but there is simply a higher likelihood you’ll have to fix things down the road. The 5.7 and 6.4 have the lifter and cam issues around 100k miles, doesn’t affect them all but it’s something to look for. The 6.1 Hemi is pretty much bulletproof though. Tough to say because I’ve Seen lots of stories where peoples’ Hemis last 200-300k miles, and lots where they fail prematurely. I wouldn’t say it’s the most reliable engine out there, and I wouldn’t say it’s the worst. What alternatives are there for a performance V8? Most will be in the same boat for reliability in my eyes.

@@doyleedward76 First I've heard of any issue with the timing chain. I looked into it and it appears this recall was in '14 and you post is a copy/paste of a motor trend article. As stated the recall is of '09-'12, so then what are you talking about in your first post of "a recall to replace parts was issued for 15 to current". From the MT article it stems from "a known fault in the oil-control valve assembly for which an updated part exists". So if everything from '12 on got the updated part(s) then what's the issue? FWIW I have a '14, that I purchased as a Chrysler certified in '19 dealer records show no unresolved recalls.

Anyone have a chrysler aspen with a 5.7? If so what have you done as far as performance? I need some ideas for my 07 Hemi Aspen

I actually have an Aspen. I’m thinking about exhaust, cold air intake, Diablo tuner. If you wanna put more $$ in then definitely do a heads and cam package and add headers, it’ll be a beast

Does this include the 5.7 in our 2021 Durango?

Yes it’s the eagle hemi (2009 and up)

What do you mean by "this"? The lifter thing, no not really, they updated the lifters it shouldn't be an issue. Just do your oil changes and use good oil.

Some or your information is not accurate. For instance; the first gen 3 Hemis were offered in 2002 - 2500 and 3500 trucks only. In my professional opinion, the quench areas in the heads do NOT negate the basic Hemispherical design.
