This really makes sense to me now! Thank you so much for your ability to speak eloquently, understandably and knowledgeably about FMQ. I enjoy watching your tutorials. It takes time from your very busy life to make them for us and I just want you to know that in my area, sadly there are no classes to attend so KZbin is the only resource I have to improve my skills. Thanks to dedicated quilters and teachers like you I am able to learn, practice and fully enjoy this art!

I have just ordered several beginner level stencils from Full Line along with their pounce pad. I am so excited to find your videos explaining in detail how to use them. Although I've sewn for over 40 years, I'm new to FMQ. Thank you for your patience and clear instructions. I think once I learn to slow down a little, I'll be on my way.

I have been putting off quilting on my own for so long. Thank you for putting this video together. I have everything you used but just didn't have the confidence in myself to do it on my own. Thank you for using two different stencils. I would not have know to flip it over. I'm still not looking forward to it but I have a lot of orphan blocks I could practice on. One every day, like you suggested. I liked "I can't believe I bought this fabric". Those always go on the back.

I am so glad you made this video! I have quilted a little since I first learned quilting in 2006. I bought the pounce pad then and I really was not happy with it because my marks would disappear so quickly. Now that I am "new" to quilting again, I love the quilting videos! Now I can use the pounce and be happy with it! Thanks so much!

Do you ever quilt to the edge of the quilt or would you use a separate border stencil or just quilt close enough to the edge that you just add the binding?

Most of the quilting is customized to each block or colorway in the quilt. We do use edge to edge on occasion but not often.

What if you have multiple color pieces for the back? Do you have to change the bobbin thread color, or just pick one color for the back?
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 2 жыл бұрын
That's really a personal choice. You can choose a neutral thread or one that will work with all of them if you want the quilting to blend into the fabric, or if you want it to stick out a bit more you can use a bolder color that still complements the fabric.

Errrr, for this newbie-est of newbs, what is a long arm....? I think I want to buy it instead of learning this on my standard machine because I'm OCD. XD LOL! Also, what is the best color to choose when you have a traditional, light/mid/dark tone quilt topper so that the chalk transfers vividly to all colors (without staining)?
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 3 жыл бұрын
A longarm is a machine that is specifically designed just for the quilting stage (creating the textured stitches that hold all three layers together as opposed to piecing tops). The "longarm" refers to the throat space between the need and the end of the machine. Some can be really big. The machines also sit on a quilt frame and you move the machine instead of the quilt. I would suggest finding a longarm rental place near you and taking a class to get to know them more. And I would get blue and pink, depending on the lighting one always shows up better than the other, but it is hard to know which until you are working on it. None of the chalk colors stain, you just have to make sure you get it all off before it ends up in the dryer, because you can heat-set the pigment if there is still some left and you throw it in to dry.

@QuiltAddictsAnonymous

The presser foot stays in the same position on most machine. You are just making it easier to move the fabric because the feed dogs aren’t pushing it forward.

@QuiltAddictsAnonymous

For an all-over design like this one you can just Quilt right off the edge of the quilt. No one will ever notice. And once you get the motion down, you can ditch the stencil and make it fit perfectly.

@QuiltAddictsAnonymous

That's not necessary, but make sure you are only ironing the Ultimate White chalk. If you iron any other color you will heat set the color and it will be there forever.

Does anyone know what is the chemistry of this amazing disappearing powder? Is it a dust hazard for asthmatics? Not meaning to be negative, but you’re getting the stuff everywhere!
@SailingHanu
@SailingHanu 5 жыл бұрын
The chalk is zinc sterate, it is perfectly harmless. It is used in makeup and even used to make the capsules in vitamins. Its widely used in many, many products. When the heat is applied from the iron or in a dryer, the chalk evaporates into the air. My Dad, Raymond Hancy, invented the pounce pad many years ago and my sister, Marilyn Deas, invented the stencils. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I'm happy to help.

RPHancy she said she is using the one that you don’t iron what is the one that brushes off and washes out made from?
@naiils
@naiils 5 жыл бұрын
Jeanene W it’s only the coloured ones that will heat set so they need to be brushed off or washed. I’m pretty sure it’s still Zinc sterate but has perhaps mica or oxides added as the colour component.
@SailingHanu
@SailingHanu 5 жыл бұрын
@@naiils Hi Naiils ~ yes, that's right. The colored pigment is what sets in the fabric. The powder is a form of tailor's chalk which disappears with heat or water, but it's the colored pigment that sets with heat so it must be brushed off or washed out. A simple lint brush works great - use the rough side against the fabric. :-)
