I know this is really old video but wanted to share that we use crates as well and bought 60 cent tile with the sticky back on it put it in the bottom of each crate. easy to clean and replace if needed. No bedding gets through the holes. Its great!

I use the political yard signs in mine. when election is over a lot of those don't get picked up. so you also help clean up the area

I'm currently learning about keeping chickens and I love finding out someone else has used something I was thinking of possibly using. Reassures me I'm on the right track.

this is creative ,But you could have put newspaper on the bottom then the straw and that's even cheaper.

Maybe the table placemats would cover more and you could cut them to size as well. Great idea on the bases which made me think of table placemats.

Fantastic. I will use this system (just 3 across) so that i can transport my broody hen to the broody coop without causing her ANY stress. Thank you for your video. Looking online for crates :)

Instead of putting something INSIDE the top crate, put something ON TOP of the bottom crate (which would be underneath the top crate)...a linoleum tile would work great!

I wonder if they moms will have their chicks on the top and if so do you ever worry about the chicks falling an hurting themselves trying to get out?
@khelfaouiaissam24 жыл бұрын
why putting the cover their you can put the same cover of wood that you used on the top ue it between the boxes that way it won't fall down

where can u get free plasti\c crates from jw ? i had a wood box that was in my coop and a cat pan atm with straw this looks like a good idea so each hen has her own cubicle ..... als how can i make a perch more stable ... my coop had a nice original perch but it fell down at one end when i went to check and make sure they were all out of the runn and in the coop..... saw one end fell down this is an old farm and old coop i fixed up and made nice again ..... jw how i could better secure the perch .. im assuming a old nail was to rusty and why it gave way .., the wood is in excelent condition though.....

Thank you that's a great idea . But my girls want the same box about the same time they will sit on another girl and lay there egg 3 open but they don't care any ideas on how to get them to use different boxes ?
@MyHomesteadingProjectChannel4 жыл бұрын
That always seems to be the way! Lol! Try blocking the box so that none of them can get in it. Hopefully they will all find a different favorite.

Thanks for sharing. Awesome Idea, that will work great in our coop.....now what will I do with all the old records. Guess I'll have to find more crates. LOL Have a great day!
@MyHomesteadingProjectChannel9 жыл бұрын
tina gryg LOL! I still have my records in crates! We were able to get ours for our coop from a local grocery store that had too many. Just ask, most times they will give you a couple.

I use them too but my chickens like to sleep on them at night and make a mess
@MyHomesteadingProjectChannel4 жыл бұрын
I’ve found that if their perch is higher than the boxes they will choose to use it instead. An angled board across the top works too as the slide off.

avonleanne We did get them from a local grocery store where we used to live. If you ask, usually they will let you have a few. Check convenience stores too.

MyHomesteadingProject As someone who works in the dairy industry, and knows the laws concerning milk crates.... Milk crates are very expensive for dairy companies to make. Any of them, even damaged ones are recycled. It is also against the law to have them and use them for anything other then their intended purpose which is to transport dairy products. That is why there is a warning on the milk crates that say "Warning use by other than registered owner punishable by law." You also can look up the laws concerning milk crates. Any business that gives them away to the public is also breaking the law and the people that have them in their possession are in possession of private property that is not theirs, which is also illegal. People that do these types of things are what causes the cost of milk and other dairy products to continually rise. Just FYI.

Carpet is the best so why you are using this. Place the carpet, sprinkle some 7 dust to prevent mites then place 2 inches of wood shaving to absorb moist and give the chicken comfortable bed then some straws to hold the eggs in the middle.
