Almost we use the same way when prepare the coptic icons..but just add the cotton fabric.. its 100 % natural materials.. But a fast question please sir.. when I let the gold leafs to dry for the next day .. is that can oxidize the gold leafs and make it's going dark? (I use Italian nazional leafs with a 2 hummers mark ) ?.. ..any way thanks a lot for the secrets.. God bless 🌹

A fantastic instructional video, really valuable information. Can I ask, for a beginner is it advisable to use imitation leaf (given the cost of the genuine thing) until the process is learned?

Many thanks for your comment. Working with Dutch metal leaf (imitation gold) is completely different as it can be handled without tools and behaves in a very different way to precious metal leaves. The only way to learn to use the cushion, gilder's knife and tip is with the real thing. Somewhere in the video, I probably talk about the "perfect level of imperfection" - the point being that an imperfect result will have a unique character which is what separates a hand made frame from one finished in a factory...

@@PictureFrames Well, my first attempt was certainly a challenge - but good fun and rewarding. The toughest part was undoubtedly laying the leaf. Despite the very many imperfections and having to embrace the faults, even my amateur effort produces a rather beautiful frame. I'd share it here if KZbin allowed it. But I'd suggest everyone give it a go. Do you mind if I ask about painting over the gesso. If I wanted a frame that was black, with gold on the inner part of the frame, what sort of black paint is best? Do you use a black bole over the red, or is there a preference for a particular type of paint? Thank you again for the video, I wouldn't have been able to give this a go without it.
