Olivier, you really saved me with your videos. My upper back has been pain-free for over a year, and my lower back is getting much better. I wonder if you could do a video for people who stand but hunch over their tables, articulating their neck and upper back at times 90-degrees over their work. For instance a carpenter, seamstress, bookbinder, etc. I would be truly grateful. It's to help a loved one... who won't listen to me 😂

very nice video, thank you. I agree with all of your advices except the monitor being lower. if you have the screen too low (example: laptop) your head will start dropping and you will get cervical pain.
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 8 ай бұрын
that's correct, but too low is not when the top of the screen is 10° below the line of sight. It is when the neck flexes more than 20°, which will bring your line of sight much lower than any standard monitor goes: it applies to working on mobile screens. In other words, your comfortable visual field is entirely below horizontal when your neck is in a neutral position.

@@OlivierGirard thank you for the nice details and all your video. I was wondering why the comfortable visual field is below horizontal, even if the head is straight? Is there an anatomical explanation? I know this is true, when looking perfectly forward we can see more details down instead of up, but I never knew the reason. maybe you a have a video explaining this? cheers.
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 8 ай бұрын
It's basically due to the shape of the cervical spine and the position of the eye balls in the skull... but the explanation is more anthropological: when we used to all live in Africa, what helped us survive was our ability to detect a predator hiding in the grass at a 30-40m distance (i.e. a safety distance). Nowadays, we have been all taught to look straight, which hollows the lower back a lot. A rough estimate when you look above horizontal is that the eye balls will do half the job, whilst the neck will do the other half. I'll shoot a short when I have a minute to show how to become aware of the visual field, and will link it here :)

Mr.Oliver I'm a student and my chair is same like in this image. its have a fixed lumber support and its support in lumber area not in the belt area. Shold i buy a lumber support cusion for support my pelvis??? 🤔

Can pressure on the belt while seating on a chair with stiff lumbar support be to high? Recently, I tested Kinnarps Plus 8 and got such impression after seating about 30-45 minutes (tried to seat "ergonomically" - lower back against the backrest). I felt too much stress in belt surrounding tissues which where in contact with the chair's lumbar support. It got a bit uncomfortable/painful. I have similar feeling when driving a car (Opel Astra K, standard seats, lumbar support not adjustable), so I put a thin and stiff cushion above the lumbar support to limit the protrusion and, consequently, eliminate discomfort in my belt. Do I do something wrong? Is Kinnarps Plus 8 unsuitable for me? Maybe I can get used to it?

Hi Olivier, I was wondering for bigger monitors such as 27" and up, does having the monitor below eye level still apply? I'm currently ussing a 49" ultrawide monitor that is 3 feet distance from me so I can see everythiong from moving my eyes left and right and wanting to know distance and height for a monitor like that.

As a 27 inch user, I really hate using like suggested, it’s slouching guaranteed

How long do you think it takes to get comfortable sitting only with the pelvis supported? I've always leaned against the backs of chairs and find it quite difficult to sit as you suggest for more than say 10 minutes. I recently bought an embody chair but am finding i can't comfortably lean against the backrest (i think this is because i have bad posture) so it's giving me double motivation to sit like you! I have also taken this as motivation to start adjusting my posture by addressing my pelvic tilt while walking and doing core and flexibility building stretches each day.

You shouldn't sit for more than 30 or 40 minutes straight. Take a 5 minutes walk after every 30 or 40 minutes. In your case, you maybe need more frequent breaks and potentially some posture exercises. This channel (i.e. "Olivier Girard - the Posture Guy") has excellent collection of exercises. You will first need to analyse what type of posture issue(s) you have Anterior Pelvic Tilt, Forward Head Posture, etc. It's a little slow process (just slightly, I'd say) but it should not discourage you.

@@SufianBabri rather annoyingly before the embody I could sit for as long as I liked in almost any chair without issues. But maybe it was all that badly postured sitting that means I can't sit comfortably in this fully ergonomic chair (I think the perfect S shape it forces you to adopt, with the lumbar support pushing into your lower back no matter what setting it's on, is just too much for my current posture where I would sit in my previous gaming chair with my ass slightly forward and my middle and upper back flat against the flat backrest). I'm doing about seven stretches for beginners at the moment, including McGill big 3, to try and loosen my body up as well as walking and standing with better posture. I'm hoping that in time the chair will finally tell me I've done the work to use it, but I do fear that it might just not be the right chair for me, perhaps the lumbar support is just too pronounced for me as one BDOTtv chair reviewer said about himself (and I can't get my money back or an exchange).

@@formulaic78 I wouldn't go back to slumping in your chair, that's gotta be bad for the lower back

@@dantheman1337 I've persevered with the chair, mostly because they wouldn't let me change it for the Aeron. It's definitely getting better, but still need a blanket over the back to sit comfortably.

No they’re good for the price. Ergonomics chairs that are not garbage start at 600-1000 usd. I sit on specially placed pillow at the unergonomic bolters on Noblechairs Icon for hours without any pain at all.
