Doctor Schultz: One of your best videos. My mom just completed 6 weeks of radiation therapy for breast cancer (double mastectomy). I don't know what she has in the way of markers and I know she's not ready for additional pain (yet) but thank you for for the information and the link. Long time subscriber

I work as a therapist in a radonc clinic that uses tattoos on patients for daily setups. Fortunately for many of our patients, the tattoos we place look like a tiny freckle/mole that would be undetectable unless you were really looking for it. I never knew this type of free program existed, but will definitely pass this info on to patients if they inquire. Thanks!

I feel like I might should clarify. If u had radiation years ago-10-20yrs ago; CT based planning wasn't widespread and treatment fields were set up by two dimensional X-rays. For people who had this type of radiation treatments those small freckles can be quite helpful if there should be a recurrence. Since CT based planning and 3 (even 4) dimensional treatment have became standard, tattoos aren't done as often. Usually, these days, fields can be recreated with having the old tx field radiographs. But we have had to recreate fields using tattoos, they are helpful when u have nothing else. On a day to day basis most clinics mark patients with Sharpie's, paint pens, or silver nitrate sticks. And for some patients, their marks will be on devices used to immobilize the area-like a face mask for brains, and head/neck cancer. I would recommend to get copies for yourself. It may cost u $20, but if an office loses your chart it can be so helpful for whomever is treating u next. Don't forget to get your copy back!

Agree - our landmarks to find a previous treatment field would be lost. Understand the need to be free of reminders of treatment, but also safety if the need arises to treat again for recurrence/metastases.

I'm a medical dosimetrist and a radiation therapist. These tattoos are literally the size of a freckle and many places don't even do this anymore now that we have ct based planning and new localization techniques. HOWEVER, if u have these tattoos KEEP THEM! If in 20 years u have a recurrence or a new cancer, these marks are a tremendous help in figuring if there is any overlap with old treatment fields. Sometimes records are lost-even electronic ones. These tattoos can help your healthcare providers treat u in the future. Also, request a copy of your treatment plan, DRRs, MRI, PET images etc. it's always a good idea to have your own personal copy to be able to give a future doctor if needed. I think this dr should have researched this more. There are reasons for these tattoos. Note: u can always decline these tattoos it's not mandatory.

Its about time. I had 7 BLUE feathered dots, they looked like skin cancer. They told me i could never remove them...yeah sure, i had them removed by a plastic surgeon, he had never seen 7 for one radiation...did i mention i found out after breast cancer radiation that my doctors speciality was proctology...that explains everything that went wrong, including 2 degree burns, total nerve loss even into my back, heart problems and the shrinkage of 2 full cup sizes. Check out your doctor's completely before they touch you.
