This 4-year-old handles knives, drops f-bombs and stays up past midnight. Meet Naylan, a free-range kid in Orlando, Florida, whose parents let him make his own mistakes - however dangerous. “A child is able to know what is safe and what is unsafe,” Naylan’s mom, Teena Patel, told The Post. She operates a day camp, Barefoot Village, for other free-range tykes where they roughhouse, go canoeing, use metal tools, and even build fires without traditional adult supervision.

I agree mostly with her, but kids also need structure to learn how to behave in society just as she provides structure when it comes to what he eats. He needs to respect others and their property, not just his temple. Despite the reputation of Tiger moms, East Asian parents are often much more "free range" with their children before school age compared to the West. I've regularly seen children wandering off and playing in east asian markets, but never are they loud or in the way. Their parents probably follow Dr. Jordan Peterson's advice, never let your child do something that makes you dislike them. This reminds me of Sadhguru talking about why the structured roads of the US are better than the chaos of India. In the US, even an old lady can drive, but in India it is not so easy. We need to balance structure and chaos, not embrace one at the cost of the other.

Do absolutely whatever you want; play however you want; as rough as you want. Play with fire, use knives... but you must eat the diet we say and never ever consume sugar, even if you want to, which you don't because we've told you it's bad.

@@randomcomment7675 yeah maybe if you’ve never had kids before, but actual parents would disagree with you. My kid knows how to shoot a gun, but I’m not just gonna give him one and let him have fun because he doesn’t understand how dangerous it can be yet. Like when your kids touch the oven, you can tell them not to but 9/10 times they’ll do it and then do it again.

I find it richly ironic (& exceedingly humorous), they’re using the term “free range” - an expression usually applied to mammals and their dietary habits - and that’s *the one* aspect the parents are the most restrictive about! No this and no that, no sugar, organic this organic that, etc., etc. Truly funny. 🤣

I've watched many documentaries on free range parenting, no rules, no school... You name it! But I've never seen one where parents are proud of their child acting like a brat in public. People, property and the rules within those boundaries are to be respected regardless of what you're okay with at home. Denying your child these virtues are only setting them up to be a disliked juvenile delinquent :/

Their food plan and structure is wonderful and I think it's great that the boy is avoiding sugar and not becoming obsessed with it like most American kids, but the rest of this seems like a recipe for disaster-- he's used to getting his way (ex. how he bossed his dad around with the reptile book and said "are you kidding me?" when he grabbed the wrong book), so he'll be AWFUL for his poor teachers once he gets to normal school. Also, it's not very polite or respectful of others if you're having your kid run wild in public places with no discipline... everyone has met those super annoying parents that let their kid scream and wail and touch the belongings of strangers while they smile and stand back (it's cute and understandable when the kid is two years old, but a preschool-kindergarten age kid should know better).

I don’t think this kid will go through the grieving period that most of us go through, as we grow older, when we realize life is not as easy as everyone made us believe. He simply learns from his parents what life is like, just the way it is, they don’t make him wait 21 years to then let him start experiencing everything on his own. He may not grow to be full of fears and insecurities, knowing he’s strong and capable and his parents already reinforced it. He is being saved from all the trauma most of us carry deep inside from not learning and developing our own potential. That’s in my opinion.

The thing with the knife. Sure a 20 year old should know how to use a knife but not a 4-year-old they shouldn’t be let near them the kid almost cut off his fingers when they’re suitable age and won’t mess around with it when they’re more mature depending on the kid that could be when they’re 10 when they’re 15 but not 4

I think this is cool but when he is in public he might be a inconvenience to other people. I think this is a cool way of parenting he also needs to learn manners in public and it's best if you tell him that and not experience

Thats kinda rude when the kid points up to the reptile book and says “are you kidding me?!”. He should learn to respect people and be patient. That is why rules exist, to give children a way to learn respectful behaviour and become highly functioning members of society. I’m okay with letting kids take risks but they need to be given some sort of rules so that they can adjust into society when older. When it comes to interactions with others it is important to be considerate. It is not just your child but someone else’s who is also involved. Bare that in mind.
